Hey Sarah and Ryan I love what the both of you are doing to your new house I'm so happy to see the both of you enjoy working together as a couple keep on doing what you are doing because it seems to work for your marriage are you going to build pens and coop for your animals how are your young adults doing I hope everything is well with them I hope that Jehovah is watching over you all . We are planning to get more animals once the build is done. Maybe convert our current shed into a larger coop for the chickens. We have lots of plans for once we are done building the house so stay tuned.

You do need to wrap your drain pipes! Our washer drain pipe freezes every January when we have a few below zero days in a row because it’s on an outside wall. It was an experience to hear rapid flowing water in your bathroom and walk in to the washer draining and it pushing the water down the drain, hitting the ice, and then spray back up like a giaser across the room! And on top of it, it was dirty water!

I had that happen the other day. Ugh cleaning up dirty water with pet hair and human hair. Put RV anti freeze (the pink stuff)in drain between used while we continue with subzero temps!!!

You won't regret insulating the drain. I had a second floor drain freeze years ago, and it took a week to thaw.

Luckily we made it through without any breaks, and the temp below our house actually stayed above freezing the whole time. We closed up all the foundation vents to keep it as warm as possible.

I can’t wait to see it finished to the point of you all being able to enjoy it during a snowstorm, being inside, toasty warm. It’s looking really good! Glad you are insulating pipes and draining those outside faucets. Nothing is worse than busted pipes! Better to be safe than sorry. Odds and ends are good to cross off. The house is looking beautiful💕

@OneFootOfftheGrid
@OneFootOfftheGrid 7 ай бұрын
The outside around the windows is not required for certificate of occupancy. We’ll complete that once we have the front deck completed and we can set up the scaffolding on the deck. Otherwise, right now, we’d have to rent a man lift. Thats not worth the money at this point since it’s not required.

I live in western Washington in Stanwood and I had to get some heat tape for my pipes. Not really something we need every year but they saved me this year! My cold water froze and once I got the heat tape in they thawed out quickly. Didn’t have to worry about burst pipes. Also the tape has a thermostat so it’s not always running. Although I am going to unplug when not in use just for kicks!

On your p traps Where are you have standing water you can put a product that is called heat trace with a thermostat and when the temperature drops down below 35 it’ll come on and keep the trap heated so will not freeze and then you will not have to run precious water
@OneFootOfftheGrid
@OneFootOfftheGrid 7 ай бұрын

Great job guys! I have a question about the short wall in your bedroom. If I remember correctly that was not in the original plans but was something you guys added, right? My question is will the space behind just be a void? I think you could use that space for cabinets by building in shelves behind and adding cabinet doors in front. It would be great for storage and would eliminate the void. Just a thought!
@OneFootOfftheGrid
@OneFootOfftheGrid 7 ай бұрын
Good question. On the side our bed is going on we weren't going to add anything because our nightstands will cover that area. We will have an access door at the end that can access the whole space, plus we were considering putting the whole top on hinges. On the opposite side, we were planning to build in built in drawers and/or Shelves to provide extra storage. We need all we can get!

They are all insulated now. We just knew that before the storm came, we hadn’t gotten to all of them yet, and we were pleasantly surprised to find out that our crawl space actually stayed fairly warm throughout the below freezing temperatures

why do you not install a frost guard cable or heating system under your house? we have this in Norway, and it keeps my worry away only turning it on when needed. :D
@OneFootOfftheGrid
@OneFootOfftheGrid 7 ай бұрын
Good question. I'll probably put a heater under our house for those really cold days in the future. I have a wifi thermomoter under the house so I could monitor the temps. Even on the coldest day it never got below freezing under the house, so we weren't too worried about the pipes freezing once we learned that.

For the cellar why not put a small electric heater that runs only if its less than 3 degrees celsius i hav e this in my own cellar when its been more than minus 20 C for a week. And the heater only nees to run for an hour a week
