WHAT a fantastic job you have done making this process clear to us all... in my mind, i just could not see "moving the quilt with the needle still in it... and the visual of "top and bottom" of the design is such a great help... Thanks Angie!!! GB

Finally I get it. I have watched every youtube video about pantographing and got the part where you line up with the highest point but what I couldn't figure out is where you put the needle to start the next row. Duh, you start on the panto where you started the first time. Somehow this never clicked until I watched your video. I agree with you on using a frame with a domestic. I tried it and was so frustrated with the machine turned sideways etc. I am lucky to have a big room and bought a Tin Lizzie 18 basic (no computer connection) and I love it. Now to try pantographs. Thank you.

Good luck, after the first time it gets easier to remember how to do it! I have since sold my frame (kept the machine, which is beautiful as a regular machine!) and bought a Sweet 16 sit-down which offers me the best of both worlds really! I love quilting! Have fun! (and glad my video helped! That's what I hoped for!!!)

Oh my gosh, that is so sweet of you to comment!!! You made my day! Quilting can be so frustrating and until you actually try it for yourself, it's so hard to communicate the method. I'm so happy my video helped a bit. Once you practice a few times and have the "aha" moment, it does get easier and becomes second nature. I actually love the look of an all-over design and sometimes it's exactly what a busy quilt asks for. The texture is amazing and the designs are so varied. Have tons of fun! Tbh, I have had my quilting on hold for some time but really want to get back to it - my machines are crying waiting for me!!!! Hugs! Have a great day!

Thank you so much for your video! It was extremely helpful. I was curious what cover you put over that actual panto. It looks like a ruler to me. I have an original grace queen quilter. I also see you tacked things down with painters tape. Could you describe your process of leveling the pantograph, establishing left and right, and the placement of the cover. Thank you!

cbradley2010 Hi! Of course I can. I could not imagine working with pantos without my Pattern Grid. I ordered it from the Colorado Quilting Company & wrote all about it in detail on my blog post Dec. 1, 2012 at overthekitchencounter.com here: www.overthekitchencounter.com/over_the_kitchen_counter_/2012/12/pattern-grid.html Hope that helps! It makes life so much easier! I slide the panto under the plastic marked grid to ensure it is lined up straight & the painters tape marks the start and end points (and holds down one side of the grid). Excellent product!

Great video and I'm so glad you posted it. I'm going to the Houston Quilt Fest in Nov 2016 and I'm probably going to come home with a Grace frame. Are you still happy with yours and the set up? A lady at my local quilt shop was just telling me that she couldn't use the pantos without the ruler grid so I'll be sure to pick one of those up too. But the realignment process has been stumping me. This video is excellent! Another question too if you don't mind...Do you find the bells and whistles on a sewing machine outweigh the loss of sewing depth you're missing from a long arm? I have a machine that has needle up/down and scissors. To get these features in a long arm is an outrageous cost and I'm sure I'd miss them. Are you satisfied with the set up of a sewing machine vs. a traditional long arm?
@dailycharmaddict
@dailycharmaddict 8 жыл бұрын
Ok, well have a super time at the Quilt Festival! I would love to attend one day! Tbh, I no longer have my frame. We moved and I just didn't have the space any more. I got a Sweet 16 sit-down instead. I kept the Janome 1600 machine though because it is a wonderful machine that I love too much! I will be honest: I think you have to go into it knowing that you will be somewhat limited. If you are new, I would say wait and see how you get on with free-motion. If you are comfortable with a sewing machine and want more, and want to get really good at fmq, I'd also say wait UNLESS you KNOW that you will be happy doing a meander, smallish quilts, and many. I found that I preferred the control and flexibility of a traditional sit down arrangement. The sweet 16 is perfect for me both in space and control with an awesome throat space. I didn't like having the space restriction of a domestic on a frame. You'd want to do a different design and hit the bars. The machine is oriented the wrong way and the functions of needle down & scissors are almost irrelevant. I didn't like the way the controller worked with a domestic because you either have to have it ON and no time to think, or on PULSE which is hard to hold the whole time and not the best for the controller buttons. That's just my honest opinion. A true long arm (I researched!) was better but just SO big and expensive!!! Really do your research and testing before you decide. Of course, like I did, I enjoyed the frame once I got over the learning curve and frustration, but then outgrew it. You could always sell it but I probably took a 50%+ loss. In a perfect world, I'd take a domestic, a frame, a sit down and a longarm but since I had to choose, the Sweet and a regular machine for smaller projects works for me! Enjoy though and please let me know what you decide!!!!! You can always rent time on a longarm too. Depends how many quilts you want to do and their size I guess!!!'
@dailycharmaddict
@dailycharmaddict 8 жыл бұрын
There are also things that no one tells you like it's hard to quilt borders and work sideways. Smoothing out the wrinkles and loading the layers is a pain and confusing. Hitting the bar and being restricted with panto size is frustrating. Not knowing what's happening on the back can be a disaster if you have tension issues, of which I had many! just so you know!!!
@PowerToolsWithThread

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply and you've given me a lot to think about. I too have a sit down machine, the Tin Lizzie 18 and I love it. I got her at the show in 2014. My problem is that I'm not a creative type and want the structure that a panto will give me in design. I didn't even consider that I would have trouble with the borders of a panto with a regular machine. I've got some rulers too but they are awkward for me. Unfortunately, the TL18 Sit Down is one that TL says can't go on a frame.(something about how the base is shaped) and there's no stitch regulator for it. Frustrating! After my first question to you, I read back in your blog about when you got the 16 so we're in the same boat. Your love of the 1600P had me doing my research on it yesterday too. I also have a Babylock Ellegante 2 that has a long throat and I might pick up a frame and give those two a try. As for renting, my local shop is 30 quilts behind and they don't allow rentals during the pre-Christmas season. I prefer to use my BL for my embroidery, but I have another embroidery machine if I need it. Again, thank you so much. Decisions! Decisions!

Sounds like we are both addicted!!!! lol! I do like the look of the couple quilts I did with a panto but it's kind of boring to do sometimes. I bought a clamshell HandiQuilter ruler to use with my Sweet and I LOVE LOVE LOVE the way the looks on my quilt (my fave quilt I use ALL the time for myself on the couch!) and the texture is awesome. It totally replicates the look and feel of a panto. For myself, the enjoyment of the quilting of an allover design is better for free motion than a panto -even if it's a simple meander, loop, clamshell, etc. I figure if I want an allover versus custom fmq, I might as well just do it myself rather than a panto. They have some cool patterns but I bet you could replicate many of them freehand. Anywho, not trying to dissuade you at all! I was so excited to get my frame after so much research and learning. It is not that expensive either so it was a worthwhile experience for me (now I know what I do and don't want). If space is not an issue and you want it, go for it! :) I could talk about quilting all day! haha! Have a great day!!!

Isn't this a lot of stress on that needle while you advance the quilt? I know you move slowly but can't you risk the needle bending during this process?
@dailycharmaddict
@dailycharmaddict 8 жыл бұрын
Because the machine is free to move as you roll your quilt there is no issue with the needle breaking - it's just going along for the ride. You need to be mindful, and just advance the quilt gently, making sure nothing interferes with the motion of the machine going backwards. This was the method I found that works for this setup and I never encountered any problems. Great question! It's all about finding what works for you and your machine setup. Thanks!
