"Even simply brushing clothes with someone is fate" (옷깃만 스쳐도 인연) is an old Korean proverb that means every interaction between you and another person-even a stranger on the street-is never an accident, but rather the elaborate result of your past lives and theirs intertwining to make that momentary interaction happen. And if even the most seemingly trivial of interactions are the result of elaborate workings of fate (인연), then something as significant as meeting the love of your life is the result of 8000 겁 of fate. This is a commonly known Buddhist teaching. 겁 (Gup) is a measurement of time. Imagine a massive boulder, and imagine that a single raindrop falls on that boulder once every 1000 years. The amount of time it would take for the boulder to finally crack from the water droplets is 1 겁. A single 겁 is an unfathomably long period of time, so 8000 겁 is something that's hard to even attempt to imagine. The saying goes that for every married couple, there's at least 8000 겁 of 인연 (fate) from their past lives that led them to each other.

I believe that In-Yun has its roots in Chinese, specifically in the words "因缘" or "姻缘," both of which mean fate. The latter emphasizes its romantic aspect, and they are both pronounced "Inn-Yuen." I always love the similarities among Eastern Asian cultures. There is a concept in Chinese similar to what you mentioned that states, "前世五百次的回眸,换来今世的一次擦肩而过," which means "Glimpse but once, a past life's glance. Five hundred times, to find the chance, To cross paths with one from before, In this life, and forevermore.". Or "十世修来同船渡,百世修来共枕眠", meaning "Ten lives of good deeds earn a shared boat ride. A hundred more, a shared pillow at your side.".

And then after Nora told him she loved him and his response of "it's just that sometimes I find that hard to believe" That killed me. Many viewers, myself included, found ourselves rooting for Nora and Hae to end up together yet feeling very sad for Arthur aswell. None of it it's his fault. Also his exhale and sad expression when first meeting Hae and seeing him standing next to his wife Nora.

this movie def isn't realistic. It's like porn for women. Of course her childhood friend happens to be a really hot guy while she's totally average looking and uninteresting. Why didn't they cast a really average looking korean guy if this is about chemistry and deep intimacy? Celine Song basically turning it into a romance novel for women, korean style.

Hey, I'm from South Korea and I can relate to this trailer... Almost same thing happened to me recently. Around 17 years ago, when I was in elementary, I met a boy whose name was "Present" in Korean. He was my first crush. I liked his shiny round eyes, a cute wide smile, and white teeth. Sadly, I had to move to another school a year later. 18 years passed, and we met each other this January. We have become both 25. He studies in medical school and I just came back to S.Korea after obtaining a diploma from another country. I didn't know he had been reading all my posts on my public diary for a few months when I was back in France. Though he knew the one who was writing the diary was me, he never said "Hi" to me. Then one day I deleted a link that had access to my public diary, so he missed a chance to let me know. A few years passed, and he noticed one comment in the comment section of one youtube video which showed a whole view of our hometown where we used to play together. That comment was, surprisingly, written by me. He noticed that it was me because I wrote down some of my personal background in the comment. He already knew I was living in France and I had a very special surname that stood out. So we met each other once again through KZbin and we talked hours and hours on social media. We finally met each other this January and we had a nice Italian lunch, drank coffee and talked for hours and hours... I think we had a nice time. We are not together tho. Maybe it was because of a bad timing or maybe because I've been having some issues with my mentality and physical health or maybe because he was in senior year at medical school...or maybe because I seemed such a deep person to him. BUT the important thing is, I have a feeling that we are still connected and one day we will see each other once again at right time and a right place. Magic happens to those who believe in magic :) Anyways, thank you for reading my magical story💛

@@buxtehude6078 love isn’t exclusive to one person and there are many types of love. You can love and cherish the memories and moments you have with a person at the same time as choosing to live a loving life with someone else. I think it’s sad that if you hold a love for someone who’s played an important part in your life would mean that you don’t actually love the person who’s important to you now and have chosen to spend the rest of your life with. Besides jazmone is right that this was more about closure from a time of her life than her actually thinking of cheating

@@Percules0001 You can love more than one person in your life. Love itself can also change overtime, such as from romantic to platonic. There’s a reason why some people are still best friends with people they’ve dated before, long after breaking up. Then again, relationships are different for everyone and only the people in said relationship know how it’s currently going and how it’ll move forward. I feel like I’m stating the obvious, but just because someone hangs out with someone they aren’t dating doesn’t mean that they’re cheating. I haven’t seen the movie yet, and there’s a non-zero chance I’m wrong and you’re completely right, but idk man I could absolutely be misinterpreting, but something about your comment just seems way off. I do get what you’re saying though, but know in real life it’s very much circumstantial.

@@redred7702i haven’t seen the movie but that scene where he say “am not going stop you seeing him” kinda says more in the mood and the silence, for me he clearly isn’t comfortable with it as he states the details of flight duration and the fact he has come just to see her” no man in the right mind would be comfortable with that, especially as it appears she has already been discussing how she felt about him when they where younger, i suppose the question is.. if the roles where reversed how would it feel. From my perspective though who live in the past emotionally are not 100% living in there present ie with there current partner. Hence the wondering thoughts etc. And we could say they should trust etc etc, but the question is would you want to put your partner through that? Regardless! The act maybe innocent but choice could cast a huge doubt over your current future, and some couple never recover from that. From the trailer only she should not have met up 🤣!!! That bond looked like it never left, and is going to cause unnecessary drama 😅!! But I haven’t seen it yet but lets see ☺️

Reconnected with my love after almost 10 years apart this past fall in NYC (I’m thirty). Coincidentally, the first time we saw each other we also ended up in Brooklyn and took pictures in the same places they are taking pictures in the movie with the bridge in the background. Circumstances took her across the world. I always knew she was the one and on starry nights, red sunsets, during milestones and in silent moments of reflection, I would wonder if I was still in her heart as she was in mine. When we finally met up, I remember gazing into her eyes for hours searching for answers, we said so much to each other without saying a single word. Turns out, I have been in her heart as much as she’s been in mine. 3 months later this past January I travelled to meet her family. We’re hoping to get engaged mid year and planning a wedding for early 2024. Timing is everything and in our hearts and in our core, we always hoped to be each others forevers. Update: We got married in Feb 2024

I just finished watching this movie, and it made me bawl my eyes out like a baby. Not because it counted on big, dramatic scenes but on all those little in-betweens that we all have in our lives, those moments where we are out of words, those in which we want to say something but can't and those where we say something different from what we want to. It was so emotionally charged, it made me feel deeply for- and with them and most of all, it left me thinking and feeling and also aching.

I just saw this movie last night!!! It was so, so good. I think it will join a handful of movies that I want to watch each year. Even the trailer, which I saw months ago, stayed with me. I'm so glad I got the opportunity to see it and loved it. The cast, the camerawork, New York, the script.

This movie was everything I expected it to be. Those long takes and shot selection paired with the performances really brings the film alive. I like how simple and straight to the point the writing is (I say this because it’s similar to something I’ve experienced before. It may have not been simple and straightforward for everyone) while also having some thought provoking moments at the same time. Best movie I’ve seen in a while for sure

An emotionally intelligent film. Throughout the movie I couldn't help but try to understand the underpinning theme of the story. One thing is true though, that it is deeply human to find, at some point in our lives, pragmatism and the ideals of our youth, warring within us. The two are in desperate conflict with each other. Each having their own set of goals, determined to declare victory over the other. Past Lives explores this duality through a very tender and wonderfully aesthetic screenplay. The film's score was amazingly unique as well. Every piece seemed to fit perfectly with the sentiment of the scene. I particularly enjoyed the constant nonverbal communication displayed between the two main characters. There were these frequent and silent moments shared between them that seemed to force the audience into those moments with them. To feel every passing second of them. Great film!

I saw Past Lives at a film festival. It's an absolutely beautiful love story and I adored it! Everything for the acting to the cinematography to the writing is superb. Would be shocked if this isn't nominated for an Oscar. :) As a side note: A24 is killing it and give me hope for filmmaking. They back such brilliant, ground-breaking films.

@@MichaelCTruthIt's not a love story in a traditional sense. There's no love triangle. :) It explores that particular bittersweet love you have for a best friend who you've fallen out of touch with. Or a romance that might've been, if only the circumstances were different. It's how you feel about those people you cared so much about that have slipped away, just because life took you on different paths. And you mourn and cherish those relationships in a sense and also wonder what might've been if things had been different. Would you still be best friends? Would you have ever fallen in love?

I don't have anyone I can call my soulmate, but this movie, for some reason, made me feel like that person exists. Every scene in this movie is not to be missed. Any movies similar to this? It's been a while since a movie made me feel this way.

its a masterpiece for sure, but this movie hurts even more to those people who dont have (and never had) anyone in their life. Its so weird that most people always have (and had) someone or the other in their lives right from the very beginning of their life, but on the other hand, some people never had anyone, ever, never got even a chance to have any sort of relationships. Such people only imagine what it would feel like to actually have someone who they could call a soulmate, and then correlate with such movies. Doomed romance movies are often a reminder how things actually work in real life for 'normal' people, but still, almost no one talks about those who are still waiting for their "first".

I just watched this movie, and I did it twice. I felt it so profoundly, and I found it hard at the same time. The movie said so much with so little. All the dialogue was kept to a minimum, but necessary. 'Love' was submerged in the oceans of life filled with ambition and the pursuit of company. Here I am, bawling my eyes out, celebrating the visual poetry of real life and how human relations are found and lost and perhaps stayed apart.

This is such a beautifully edited trailer. What a tender, compelling, sweet story. It feels so good to see something so tender and to have it move me too my core. The abrasiveness of life has been suffocating lately. The music, the storyline, and the vulnerability of the characters has me soaked in tears and so relieved to not be bombarded by crass vulgarity and violence. I want to find the fucking pause button on life and keep it solely on these tender, quiet, lovely, joyful, awe inspiring moments. I also appreciate when films pay such beautiful homage to cultural philosophies/wisdom such as this one regarding past lives and its poetic interpretation of our daily life.

Have you seen any of the "Before" movies of Richard Linklater? What about "Already Tomorrow in Hongkong" starring Jamie Chung and Bryan Greenberg. There's also "Before We Go" directed by Chris Evans. One thing I can say though is that the last 2 films I mentioned lack the depth of the "Before" movies. I have a feeling that you will also enjoy watching "Modern Love", it's an Amazon Prime TV series that's a compilation of multiple short films of different directors. Stories that focus on relationships, romance and heartbreak.

It made me think of the movie Supernova and the pure expressions of love on the 2 main character's faces ( Colin Firth & Stanley Tucci)... So touching, so relatable.
