I compare the new Sony a6400 mirrorless camera to the Canon EOS RP which is the least expensive full frame camera, for video shooters. I compare the 4K UHD quality in 24fps, cover the Crop that you get with the EOS RP. We look at in body image stabilization and video autofocus as well as rolling shutter. Of course low light and high ISO performance is what everyone really wants to see so we cover that in detail towards the end of the video. The Canon has great ergonomics and is easier to use but the sony has a lot more options.

Professionals know how to grade their footage and the Canon colour is quite a myth anyway, a few tweaks in the PP and you get what you want (for any camera manufacturer). Unfortunately, Canon is behind is almost any aspect, except for ergonomic and durability I would say.

Both cameras were pretty average, one had slightly better DR and the other had better colour. Noone will ever notice that some cloud detail isn't there, but they surely will notice how crap the Sony colour looks.

@@TimLucasdesign the point is though that it actually won't, the sensor in the RP falls behind both dynamic range and lowlight noise performance when compared to the APS-C sized sensor in the Sony, and even only matches the 3 year old 6DmkII and 4 year old 80D crop sensor camera from Canon's own lineup. When comparing with equal equivalent glass, the Sony A6400 is a superior stills camera in addition to all its video specs.

Sony is awesome. I started with them back in 2010 or so with the NEX-3. Most exited about the color of the A7riii, A7iii, A6400. Could stand the green yellow cast in low light. I use RAW as backup only in case I totally mess up the exposure. IBIS would have been nice, but the a6500 IBIS wasn’t really good.

Great video with good comparisons!😊 I really wish Sony would make a line of cameras that focused on ergonomics and usability instead of trying to miniaturize all their camera bodies, as they otherwise have such good camera technology. Their skin tones appear to have improved in these latest releases. And the continuous auto focus tracking is just phenomenal. Keep up the good work!😉

Pretty hilarious to read some of these comments. Both cameras are pretty sensible of their features, lots of limitations. Very comparable too. Yet, some people jump straight into a “winner” here when in reality there is none. Just preferences. Some won’t care about 4K, some won’t care about dynamic range or color science, some don’t even know what rolling shutter is yet sill make assumptions on video.. lol. Both are consumer cameras for non professionals. And for that market both will work just fine. If you are a pro or a enthusiast/pro-sumer, most likely ( depending on budget ) you will not get any of them. ....but, good video. Some nice comparisons.

I bought the a6400, I would of loved to stay with Canon. I've been a Canon guy for a while, even my camcorder was Canon, but they refuse to put out a mid level camera with 1080 120fps & log... I put out all my videos in 1080, which is great for my Sl2, but i wanted a second camera for broll and 4k for my long grinding shots, so i can downscale... After watching this, I'm sure I made the right choice, in fact in a few months, i might sell all my canon gear & buy the Fuji xt3... Once you get out of the canon mindset, you see they really don't care about videography... Thanks for all the content... take it easy...

Thanks Max, I think the RP did pretty well in this comparison (particularly as it is a body not really focussed on video - more geared towards photography). At 4 minutes, I much preferred the Canon as the Sony made Vadeem look sick. I would definitely trade off dynamic range for a better looking image overall. Sony face improved later on in good light, but Canon still rules skin tones. Again, I think most people will be buying the RP for photography more than video, and at this entry level price point, most shooters will be very happy shooting 1080p most of the time, which negates many of the Sony advantages. Anyone shooting at a more advanced level will not be shooting on either of these cameras - let's face it.

Hello, please help me solve this dilemma. I have a KZbin channel dedicated to watches, I want to buy a camera. I like these 2 options, and they have the same price at the moment. The Sony A6400 is worth $1300 with the 18mm - 135mm lens, and the Canon Eos Rp is worth the same with the 24mm - 105mm lens. Which is a better option? I am also potentially interested in shooting short films with the camera. Thanks for your time. Or if you have another recommendation, that's my max budget.

Sony got great dynamic range with S-Log. But what’s the point if the color is not great after graded? 8bit color depth with so so bitrate makes slog not that useful as you think. It’s hit and miss in terms of good quality/color footage. I was shooting with slog alot and now I don’t do that anymore. Just too much work to get the color right. Dynamic range is just one part of the equation to good looking/quality footage. I like the autofocus on the A6400 though. No 1080p 24fps on the RP is crazy!

canon RP was created for one purpose,. those photographer who wanted to upgrade from crop sensor to full frame that not interested on video features,. mostly those person complaining about canon are videographers not photographers,. in real world used, sony crop sensors are very sucks in photography,. when shooting jpeg,. when your an event photographer and shooting 1K+ in sony you need to edit all photos to make it pleasing to the eye of client,. its very sucks,. everything looks green even the skin stone,. sony AWB are so sucks,. you need to change everything else before shooting,. you can't rely on AWB

Geoff, for me it’s all out where to grow. I get caught up on the fact that with Fuji, I’d be stuck with APS-C. But the glass is so cheap for the quality and Sony doesn’t have a great crop selection other than sigma primes. If you graduate to the Sony A7iii you get great low light and usability. The next step with Fuji is the XT3 which means you get 4K 60 and 10bit internal. Also the glass you’ve invested in will stay useful, but if you want to go with Sony, unless you bought full frame glass ($$$) you’re probably investing in all new lenses anyways. There are three future cameras that could essentially change the game for these systems. For Fuji, the XH-2 would be a bomb camera if they just keep the same video specs and add great IBIS. For Sony, A7000 and A7s3 could blow us all away with features. Could be a deciding factor. I’m assuming the A6400 and XT30 are going to be extremely comparable and it’s going to come down to preference. What kind of filmmaking do you do?

I think Canon is interesting when you buy it with a lens like 24-105. It's excellent lense with quality like G master. So in the future you can buy new better body and stay with excellent RF lenses. For Sony APS-C lenses it'priority...

If you really want to be fair and make a good review, you have to use native glass on both or non-native glass on both. All your test are flawed otherwise. If you don't have the lens to make a fair comparison, then rent from Lensrental or Adorama.

@@cooloox a four year old sensor, lacking features included in a camera released six years ago whos native lens lineup starts at the price of the entire body or more and is built solely to profit of their name and the misunderstanding of the consumer who have been taught sensor size is everything at expense of everything. And I'm telling you this as someone who was taught by Canon as an official rep on their product line and a former professional Canon shooter. I left because they aren't willing to innovate and want their reps to mislead consumers...as a photography camera its mildly interesting, a something for video, its' a joke and I wouldn't hire anyone who wanted to show up professionally with one no matter how rigged out.

TheTechnoPilot first professional want Canon. The 2018 Documentary Oscar winner was all shot on Canon. And all of the other nominations were shot on Canon. Sensor size is a factor or why else would resolution be of most importance. So stop the bullshit your insulting our intelligence.

@@Davitor1 Lmao - evert oscar films were shot on non-canon cameras. The documentary section was dominated by the c300 because it's a damn good camera. But it would be unfair to compare it to the a6400. It would be like me suggesting we should compare the FS7/5 with the canon m50. It's just not fair. The a6400 is better than the RP in almost every way, and you can easily fix the color on the a6400. The RP isn't awful but it is in most ways worse. (Although having used both the ergonomics on the canon is slightly better imo)

So the low light is showing different approaches. The Sony is losing color detail and the Canon is losing monochrome detail. Actually the Canon is kinda nice, colors are really better.

Eos RP 100 % m Canon always comes through for its customers with Software updates, just as they did fir the R 5 at the end of last year

No video AF and very lens-specific performance on my Sony a6500. I switched to Metabones even though I have Sigma glass.

@@rsmith02 Wrong. I am not sure about eye af although I think it would work. But video af definitely works on most lenses (at least the sigma ones)

You probably not going to see a significant difference because Sony mirrorless camera only output 8 bits, but you will have a 4:4:2 rational color bit oppose to a4:4:0 a little more room for color grading in post.

I have Nikon cameras,Sony full frame the original A7 and the A6400,for what you get and the price you pay, it's under priced in my opinion.
