Sad that the owner let the car sit and get to this condition when financial problems occurred. If this 57 would have been sold to an enthusiast it would have been easy to restore at the time it was parked. So many other classics have been destroyed by the words; Someday I'm gonna restore it! Love watching your clean-ups from NC. I used to live in Mentor, Ohio.

Enjoyed the video. Here is some help with the door, trunk, ignition, and glovebox locks. I grew up and worked in my Dad's Chevrolet dealership and having built up a 55 Chevy Convertible in 1971 that had been in a ditch for several years, I knew how to get keys for the car. We had a master set of keys that worked for all GM cars. You usually had to try a lot of them, but once you found one that worked, you could unlock the lock, remove the lock cylinder, get the four digit code from the lock, and use that to cut the correct key. Some people just had us cut a copy from the master and didn;t worry about the correct code. We had four or five rings of master keys. They worked great on all of these cars, but were not longer useful when the steering column locks came about. It has been so long ago, I don't remember, but I think that they worked through 1967. As I remember, the door and ignition are the same and trunk and glovebox are another code. If you can find a dealer that has been in business for a long time, you can probably get them to help you with the master key set. Hope this helps.

My dad was a Cadillac & Oldsmobile dealer in Michigan (1946-1996)...I recall that you could take the engine number to any GM dealer and get a key "cut" for both the passenger doors and trunk (square key: doors, round key: trunk). Good luck.

I would have entertained asking a lock smith to pop the locks and had a key cut for it, one alternative is to flood the mechanism by prying the door card slightly and pumping WD40 inside , and the door locks , and spraying the door seam to cover the striker . Had a EH Holden Special which jammed on me in the same way also utilised a old hair dryer to heat and expand at the same time .

Word of advice: if you ever pick something out of a garage, always look around for extra parts. Most people buy new parts for vehicles and don't have time to put them on so they just sit on shelves. It will cost less because most owners will just throw them in the deal just so they don't have extra parts left behind.

Sold my restored 57' Bel Air with the original and running 283 in the bay along with a machine shop rebuilt and cammed 58' 283, complete carb to pan, with billet and SS add ons, extra doors, trim, original front spindles and brakes, a rebuilt 400 turbo transmission, wheels, wide whites. Everything 57' Chevy went with the deal. $30,000.00 worth of car and parts for 38,500.00, asked 40,000.00. Still regret to this day.

To open a door, grab the partial open window at the top and firmly push it up and down several times to loosen the window regulator, then it should push down. Or use a metal clothes hanger or a firm piece of wire to reach inside the window to grab the door handle. Hook onto the inside door handle and pull up, and the door will open, even if the lock button is down. Nice find!

I read many comments suggesting removing the front fenders. I am not sure about 55-57 Chevys, but many front fenders on older GM vehicles i have worked on seem to always have one bolt that cannot be removed at the top and rear of the fender that cannot be removed without having the doors in an open position. Just a thought. A quick glance at a new replacement fender would tell the story before taking things apart.

unlike a modern car, the door striker/latch mechanism is mounted outside of the door, not inside of it. So Yes, spraying Deep Creep or PB Blaster might have helped. if you got the door panel "off"...you could spray into the door to the rods and clevis's to help get it unlocked. Pulling up on the inside handle while pulling up on the door lock would have been a thing also.

Looks like this is going to be a fun one. It is a '57, but it is not a Bel Air. It is a series 210, which is the mid-line. Still, it is a sport coupe. The Bel Air was just trim differences, mostly. Good luck with the car! BTW, just shinny into the car via the open window. Raise the door latch handle and kick the snot out of the door, going outward. The door latch handle will unlock the mechanism, Will take persuasion, but should work. Better to wreck an already shot door panel than cut a door! Wet sanding is detailing 101.

I would have broken the passenger window, remove door panel , taken the door handle assembly apart. Sacrificing the door panel and glass are 2 pieces that are available for replacement. Gotta be done sooner or later.

First of all: my guesstimation of the moss probably would have grown between 15 to 20 years after the car was parked it all depends on when the whole garage fell down. Second of all: I probably would have drilled out the locks, and after I finished the interior, I would have bought new locks to fix the ones that I drilled a whole through. I hope you fixed the rust on the hood because it didn't look so pretty with a big rusted place on the hood.

Without breaking a window, I would soak the keyhole with pb blaster. Also, I'd spray the lock mechanism with it as well. I'd resoak it a few times. If it won't unlock then I'd try a slim jim which would bypass the lock and handle mechanism. You could also pull the window out of its guide and drop it inside the door to gain access from the inside.

A good keymaker could make you a key to the doors. If its doesnt work, try getting in to the trunk, from there you can access the back of the backseat. I think it should be able to remove by lifting it up and out

I'm wondering if this is a 210 instead of a BelAir? Yes they made 2 H.T.'s back then in both series. Would a bent coat hanger unlock it or was the doors "frozen" shut by rust?

Why even bother cleaning those rotten tires? They need to be replaced...whole thing needs a restoration...I washed my truck before disassembly, but I sure didn't detail it...there will be plenty of time for that once she's wearing a fresh coat of paint...this is all overkill on something that needs a full restoration & a new paint job & rechroming...bet that floorboard has some good rust holes in it too from not being stored properly...how long did it take to grow that moss? 30 years...background music is hideous...I'd rather hear the tools going...

I have some questions and answers for you. Car title signed over or is it going back to the owner? Where did you find this thing? Because I may have found that car ahead of you without actually realizing it. Now for the answers. To get into the car you will have pull the door panels, first getting it open. I noticed your boy there was able to get his arm in to pop the roof dent mostly out. So, that means you should be able to reach the door handle on the inside. Problem is rust and lever being stuck. The lever usually on this connects via rods to pull the door latch mechanism for release, sometimes a rope or other mechanism for some cars. From the inside pull the locks up if you can, WD40 around the lock plunger hole and in the key holes. Get the WD40 nozzle down the window tracks and hose around. If you lift up and then push the window back down it might free itself up on the track. The more room you have to spray WD40 in there the better. Do the same with the handles on the outside, get that WD40 in there anyway you can. You want to lift up and push down the locking plungers as much as you can without destroying them. Bang lightly with your hand around the door handles on the outside, you are basically trying to knock loose as much of whatever is in there holding up the mechanisms. Its been a long time since I worked on a 50's chev, however if you can get those door lock plungers to operate and free up the latch for regular open you are halfway there. The door handles on the outside should be riveted in place and if those rivets have rusted enough, you might be able to pry the handles and door latch switch off giving you access to, very carefully mind you, giving you access, to, yep thats right, hose more wd40 in there. If you can manage to remove the chrome strips from the top of the door near the windows without destroying stuff doing it, you will have even more access. Its a hose and let sit kind of deal. If you can get a door handle and open button out of the way you may be able to grab ahold of the interior line or metal rod to actuate the latch mechanism. You could also use what I call a slip key, it patterns as you stick it into the key hole there, you then take a blank key and file it down to match, you now have an effective jiggler key. Or, since your boy was able to get his entire arm in there, with clearance to smack the dent out, then, you might be lying.

To get in, climb in the trunk and from there into the back seat. If the trunk opens. Looks like the tires didn't hold up very well. 64 years of schmutz. To get this thing into any kind of usable shape it would take at least $50K. Nice as a little bit of memorabilia. I am a huge fan of the 1957 Chevrolet. Bel Aire, but I really loved the Impala.

Was that a trick question? I think I would have either crawled through the passenger door open window or just reached in and used the handle. But hey you got good engagement for the KZbin algorithm. The trunks also open with a screwdriver. Crawl through the backseat.

AutoZone or advanced Auto what ever u have near you sells an air bag kit to get into cars that are locked. All you do is put the airbag in between the door and you basically pump it like someone takes your blood pressure and it slowly cracks the door open to where you could take like a hook and pop the lock on inside.

My first car at age 16 was a 1957 BelAir 2-door hardtop. The car in the video is a 210, which is much more rare than a BelAir. BelAirs have gold "Vs" on the trunk lid and hood, gold inserts in the top of the front fenders, BelAir strips in the rear, BelAir script on the rear quarter panels and other upgrades. Look up a 1957 BelAir photo and you will immediately see the differences.
