It's an old Roman Catholic Cathedral. The crypt had originally contained the preserved remains of previous Bishops. The skull shaped glyphs indicate burials.

I agree - most likely Catholic due to the location. But as I mentioned above - it could have been Episcopalian too. They're very much alike.

I grew up Catholic while going to a Lutheran school, got married in a Presbyterian Church, and I've been to services at Lutheran, Baptist, Presbyterian, Methodist, Episcopalian, and non-denominational churches, and honestly, they're all similar enough that if I wasn't paying attention to Communion, and maybe on my phone for the rest... (okay, so Catholics have more holy water and incense and processionals and things), I'd be hard-pressed to tell you which was which, except for Baptist. Also, I wouldn't be on my phone during Mass, because it's rude, but anything for an example =P.

It is too small to be a cathedral and it did not appear to have a place for the Bishop's "throne". The term cathedral comes from the "throne" itself; "cathedra" in Latin means seat or chair (in this case the chair of the bishop). There is almost always just one cathedral in a Diocese and it is almost always a large church in a large city. Some dioceses have a "pro cathedral" or a second church for a bishop if the diocese is really large and he must spend time in both areas of the diocese--but these are rare exceptions. The little room behind the altar area was the sacristy where the church linens and the clergy vestments and vessels / candles, etc. were kept. You could see the remainder of the large "cupboard" which had long drawers to place church linens in. I doubt any of the tombs were the graves of bishops. It is more likely that they were tombs of families who helped found or build the church. The first stained glass window appeared to be of St. Francis of Assisi and the second--not completely seen--may be of the Blessed Mother. What ever happened to this parish church that it was abandoned? A new building somewhere else that removed and used the bells, crucifix, statues, etc.? And the graves abandoned to possible looters? Where was this old parish church located? The stained glass windows alone--if they had not already been vandalized by stones--would have been worth a lot of money. Very sad.

Leslie, my dear friend, ONLY YOU could view a fecal-covered, broken organ in an abandoned centuries -old church and say "it's covered in bird poop but it's still beautiful!" You are definitely one of a kind!! And may I agree 100% ..... Builders and specialized craftsman in general were certainly skilled! The time it must've taken to do this....amazing! And what kind of church would have skills and such IN the floors!? That place is a bit creepier than others I've seen you go into. Disquieting. Be well and safe travels.

@Rose Treiger Wow! I've read almost all the comments and it seems we are the only one knowing that!!!! It's sad he haven't taken the time to clean the inscriptions and filmed them. I'd really like to know which church it is to do some deeper research. Authorities might have said they were doing archeological investigations here but it clearly looks more like they came to take/remove something important or that they didn't wanted to be found by the people. ;)

skull and cross bones used common in that time era in the religious faith . That man is Dust and dust we shall return . That our time here is short compared to eternity. In The New England states The Skull and cross bones can be found on many of the graves before the 1750s and can after wards be found with angel wings with faces . each stone told a story for the generations to come . What you have uncovered in Ireland is amazing as many of the catholic crypts Priest and Monks were Buried in the Church as each one that server or group had passed on to their Reward. Your so lucky to have that kind of Historic Knowledge where you are from and its a Gift to find it and come across it . I can not believe that it was disturbed 20 years ago as you never disturb The Priests or Monks Tombs or do what they have done . You were well protected in your discovery and documentation even if you have no Christian Belief . Awesome Video . Guys .

Hello Brothers of Decay, I love your you tube channel. Your videos are very good. I admire you both are so respectful & in awe of these abandoned places whether they are a farm, house, chateuxs or palace . Some are in ruin, fire damages or in pristine condition. The places with beautiful antiques furniture, paintings, ornaments, statues, sets of glasses, plates etc Why cannot the government or the country they are from remove these things so they will not just be damaged by times. It seems such a shame to leave valuable and historic items to be damaged by the elements as these places decay. The places you visit that are in good condition, why couldn't these places be used to help their country by using them for the homeless or rehouse families in need. Many more discoveries in 2018 for you both in the New Year!!!! From your fan.... Rachael xxx

The entire floors of many old churches are covered in tombs. People from the 1400's to the 1800's paid a lot of money to be buried in the floors of the church. I've been to several in Europe. I don't think they exist in America.

Would love to know what the inscription on the floor by that skull and bones says. That church pretty much represents Christianity in Europe today. Decaying. The windows are works of art that people just ignore. I guess that they could not be moved so they just decay. So much historical treasure overlooked in Europe. It seems like people do not even honor the possessions of their parents.

Thinking it was not excavated , it was robbed, the windows are breathtaking , too bad they will lay in waste like the rest of this beautiful place . Awesome video, thanks for caring 🤗💕

Oh, do be careful in places like that, not only because of the fragility of staircases and such, but also the danger of germs. A friend of mine caught typhus from breathing pidgeon poo dust when she was a child, or where you also wearing a protective mask? I hope so! -- Oops, I just realised I´m the umpteenth person to tell you that XD

Another excellent video, thank you. As to how the brick domes were constructed there are probably many methods, I know of two. The first is using a wooden mould onto which the brick are laid. The second is free laying, that is no mould is used, the bricklayer just lays brick with sticky mortar and just keeps going round in a spiral sort of approach. Believe it or not this approach doesn't collapse while being built (at least hopefully not). From the appearance of the pipe organ, the wooden pipes remain in the back so probably the metal pipes were taken for scrap value. The back room into which you said the priest took his tea is known as a 'sacristy', It is the place where the priest dresses in vestments related to the religious service. It is also the place where items such as the chalice are stored when not in use. Essentially it is a room into which important items can be stored and kept under lock and key. As to his tea, well that would be conjecture on my part.

back in the Era of which this church was built (1700 to early 1800s) bodies were buried in the church specifically nobles or rich merchants. those markers you found were likely grave markers but due to sanitation issues the bodies were likely moved out doors due to odour or pests.

Wow, just wow!! Great explore. And I'm super impressed at how you got yourself up through that little window like opening into the top. You are in great shape.

This video is amazing. I've never seen a 'Skull & Crossbow' in a Church, very interesting. I absolutely LOVE those beautiful Stained-glass Windows.

Thank you for the tour ! You asked about the skulls on the ground leading to where they did the digging,. The skulls with bones and sometimes wings were symbolic of death ! Usually put on tomb stones to remind people that death was not far off ,during the 1800s ! So yeah there were crypts in the church . It's sad how they left such a well built church ,with the stained glasses windows abandoned ! Europe has abandoned hotels in .Germany, as you visited one in Italy ! As usual your video was very good ! Cheers
