Another episode from our incredible Portugal series! For this documentary, we went into a rural town in Portugal where the Mansion of a rich Portuguese family is left behind! They where a family of four people, mother, father and two boys. The people of the town called them the riches because they owned around 20 businesses in the town. But the house has something odd to it... upstairs it was like a construction site. This was because they could not obtain the permits to renovate this part of the house, later on they abandoned the place because of this and they left everything behind.
Come with us on this adventure, it is gonna be an epic one!

My Swedish uncle Lasse also was a ham radio amateur...I can remember his calling code, and whenever you were on the air, you had to have your calling code followed with the words: "Calling C.Q, calling C.Q"! I loved it, and never forgot these wonderful moments spent with my uncle! So...thanks ffor the memory, and cheers to the both of you! Philip

@@marcocolombo2428 Well, what a strange suggestion...what's the catch, this time? This idea seems a bit...corny! PS: it's nothing mean, of course, just humourous, but could it be a friend of mine who suggested that you contact me? It so happens that he knows that I already have a collection of antique radios which I don't know where to display, because of a lack of space! But yes,as one of those new "micro enterprises", I could open a radiorelay. what would be hard to find, though, is some vintage equipment, in a working or restorable shape

Cool video.. I´m into amateur radio... the cards on the wall are called QSL cards. Each of them confirms a QSO (radio chat) .. cheking them carefully I notice the owner of that home had this call sign: CT1ZB and even noticed a card sent by a friend of mine. I sent him the video and he told me he remmembers that man being a very active "radio man".... thanks for the vid. By the way: thousands of amateur radio ops are still active....despite internet.

The cards you see in the radio room are called "QSL" cards. They are sent by post as a confirmation of the contact (called a QSO) you had with another amateur station. Certain organizations gave special award certificates for talking to (or "working" as we call it) different countries, etc. Great video all around. Thanks for putting it up.

Love those blown kisses and “I love you”s, too. Nice to hear even when you know you’ll never meet or actually get a kiss. My oldest grandson is about a year or so older than Leslie. My grandson is also adorable. I love every minute I get to be with him which is not nearly as often as I’d like but I know he is on his way to his own life. I feel wistful being such an old woman. The QSL cards are sometimes sent by regular post, but usually via "the QSL bureau" which is a private postal system run by radio amateur societies. He would have visited some local club of radio amateurs once a month or so, and handed over the QSL cards he wrote and receive the cards that others wrote to him (which are sent as large packages by regular post between the amateur radio societies all over the world). This system saved on postage as many cards were collected and sent in a single batch. Disadvantage is that it could easily take a year for your card to finally show up.

I love your videos, I’m Portuguese and when you find the “armour certificate” it’s actually a love certificate it’s just something cheesy you can find in stores very used in the 80s 90s. In the kitchen it wasn’t recipes it was children’s homework! It seems to me that squatters lived in there. Women were allowed to go in the their husbands hobby rooms but only to clean never to enjoyed! Keep exploring homes in Portugal I love to watch them and how careful you are with everything!

Yeah but this is different than CB radio, This guy was doing "Ham radio" (aka "Amateur Radio"). It's somewhat like CB but also very different. Ham radio has a lot more different types of radios and a lot more frequencies and a lot more modes than CB. Ham radio has also been around a lot longer than most CB. Also with ham radio you need to pass a test to get a license. I did both Ham and CB radio and both were a lot of fun. I still do it now and then.

The part @ 3:47 is from a very common "grinder" that can be used to grind meat or root vegetables. I actually have a couple of the and they work very well. The rest of it, the housing, would clamp to the table or bench and a bowl or pan under the end would catch whatever you were grinding.

Bij 20:15, dat is een bandrecorder. De voorloper van de cassetterecorder. Begin jaren 70 hadden mijn ouders zo'n apparaat.

This is a sad story, that they couldn’t finish the beautiful design they intended for their home. Beautiful things they had planned. Places for. Thanks for showing this. Stay safe and keep having fun. Those radios were operating on Citizens Ban radio waves, similar to what emergency services used. They would go on and just see if anyone was on their Band and wanted to talk. Over time they made close friendships with people they would never meet. Some people still use these radios today.🖤🇨🇦

CB radios are low power and low frequency range. No license is required to use them. Many truck drivers used them. This man was a licensed amateur radio operator, he had to pass a number of tests to be able to use it. These much more powerful radios are still in use around the world. Used in emergency situations they can be the only way to communicate. Recently a USA naval ship lost all power for several days and the only way they could call for help was via the amateur radio system. It's fun to chat with people on the other side of the world when the atmospheric conditions are right.

Lots of unanswered questions about the new addition which would have been very large. Why take the risk if you can afford to get the permits needed. In the USA an inspector has the authority to have the new construction taken down, especially so if electrical wiring & plumbing were installed. I truly believed someone had to inform the authorities of what was going on. Not certain in Portugal how the property taxes work as this addition would have possibly cost more taxes based on the square footage that would include the addition. Wow I am just amazed one would take that chance. Thanks for sharing, keep safe and healthy.

I am an amateur radio operator, seeing that many QSL cards, I can only imagine how dedicated that guy was to his hobby.

It’s a wonder that if they were so wealthy, they didn’t just buy the needed permits. Someone must have snitched. My 1904 house needed some work before we moved in so I asked the contractor about permits. He smiled, winked and said..only if the building inspector stops by. The radio room! Wow!! My husband wanted me to get my amateur license but at that time, one had to know Morse Code and I couldn’t get my head around the dots and dashes!! A friend, even in the 1990ss insisted that the best sound came from reel-to-reel tapes. He had the equivalent of albums on reel-to-reel! Thank you for this lovely explore. Stay healthy!!!
