Abandoned Railroad Spurs & Railroad Sidings In Circleville, Ohio. Norfolk Southern 4 Track Railroad Yard Abandoned. Track, Switches & Abandoned Grain Elevator. 5 Track Railroad Crossing. Grain Train On Sharp Curve. 4 Trains Including Locomotive Running Long Hood Forward.
Railroad town just south of Columbus, Ohio with the worlds largest pumpkin water tower. This time we see the spurs and railroad sidings that are abandoned and in danger of being removed. Time to document for history. We also see 4 trains of various types including a local switching freight running long hood forward like the old Norfolk & Western Railway days.
We also see the pumpkin water tower. I featured it in a video about a week ago so make sure that you see that video. Circleville also has a CSX line to the west of the city. Not as many trains go on that line. We also have the Live Action Pets and the slide show at the end of the video that came from this video.
Filmed Spring, 2024 in 1080p with 60fps. Thanks for watching!
Please thumbs up and watch another JawTooth video to help my channel.

I have noticed a lot more open boxcars (usually just one) on many trains since Shoestring died. It is nice to think it is in honor of him. TY for your videos.

I'm 73 years old and think there is nothing more historically nostalgic than railroad tracks, even railways where there are no tracks any longer. I'm from Columbus, Oh. On the north side of town (Kinnear and Kenny Roads, to be exact), 40 years ago there were a couple of railroad spurs that traveled up near some suburban neighbors. The spurs are now long rows of brushy lanes. Where the rails crossed, the rails were removed, the roadway patched. Now those streets have been resurfaced so that there are slight, almost unnoticeable dips at the location of the rail crossings.

That was a main line for Penn Central RR. It went west of Circleville, under US23 the CSX RR crossed the Scioto River, threw Kinderhook, Williamsport, Atlanta, New Holland crossed route U22 west of New Holland into Washington Courthouse. There was a VI Tower that watched the Dimond crossing on Court St in Circleville. It was destroyed in a massive coal train wreck at that crossing in the 70s. You can find some historical pictures of the VI Tower in Circleville a then and now from the 40s.

Coal train wreck was May of 1978, northbound towards Columbus, lead unit rolled over on the curve right there just past S. Court St. All the coal cars piled up behind the derailed loco, totally shutting down Court St. with a mountain of coal and twisted steel. Literally, about 45 minutes ago, I found the photo I took of the smashed lead unit after they stood it back up on the rails. It's a shot of the nose, NW loco, I cannot see any number on the side, and the damaged back-lit number on the top looks like 3 digits, ?00 - unsure of the first number, could be "6" or "8". If my guess at the number is right, it may be an EMD GP9.

Definitely the type of town that just gets one more and more interested in the track layout that is just steeped in history. The old Rail and switches plus businesses no longer in operation speaker of days when business was brisk here. That elevator definitely was massive for its day and the only reason it's still standing it's just a drag to tear it down with all that thick concrete and rebar. Then later on you're down with that four track mini yard and the switches where it goes onto a concrete loading platform just makes this town a natural winner for exploration so thanks for covering the rusty rails
@25mfd

hey paul are they done tearing down the old froedert malt elevator over at the belt... that whole area is slowly disappearing from a railroad aspect... mitchel yard looks defunct, wouldn't surprise me if they pull the tracks outta there as well

@@25mfd they actually got the plant torn down by mid-october which surprised me all done by Wrecking Ball. There are still mountains of processed concrete into gravel on site however but I think all the metal is gone now. It just looks so strange to see it gone from the skyline in fact the one Clinic I go to you would see it from their fifth Story window and all the sudden there is nothing there anymore. It's very peculiar also that the most common car start at Mitchell yard are covered hoppers including former CNW malt cars as if to give a final salute. At the grade crossings it looked odd during the winter to see the snow heaped up on the rails undisturbed for up to a week at a time and now you look at them they're just two rusty streaks. There probably isn't more than one interchange move a week. Komatsu has some production transferred now to the facility on Greenfield Avenue but still must have some stuff at National Avenue yet but I suspect they will be out by the end of summer. There still is track work to be done at the new site but contrary to early drawings they are not putting a connection in to the Old Milwaukee Road main line pretty much where the old connection used to be. Cold traffic to Oak Creek should be starting to drop next month as they close down the two oldest boilers
@25mfd
@25mfd 27 күн бұрын
@@paulbergen9114 yea so much has changed and is STILL changing... i didn't know about the oak creek boilers going offline... i did hear about alliant energy, Edgewater in sheboygan... i guess last year they were plans to close that place down but the plans changed... what do you know about anything new with ladish malt in jeff junction???... in the past, that place was good for loading out 8 to 10 carloads of malt per week... i remember switching those cars out at butler... they were all for anheuser busch... some would go to st louis, others would go out to a brewery in waverly new jersey... yea it's sad... i just shake my head at all the stuff that's gone now

My hometown. My dad remembers that spur in use. Where it connects to the NS line there used to be a nice train station (currently storage units). Both sides on the mainline had long awnings. I've seen many pictures of it that my dad took. When I was growing up,there was an old train car that was a resturant called the Choo Choo Inn to the left of the train station. The house at the end of the video is The Octagon House. It used to sit where the strip mall is beside Wal-Mart. It was the M.M. Crites farm. A good friend from school lived there. Great place for parties. Very unique house.

The one line was the former Penn Central (PRR) Cincinnati and Muskingum Valley abandoned March 31st, 1976 . N&W picked up the remaining Circleville customers.

Yeah, as a kid in the 60s I remember seeing traffic on that PRR line, and the freight station in use.

That track at one time went from Lancaster Ohio to Washington Court house. The grain elevator there was for Purina dog food, and the track on the north side also had a train depot there up till a few years ago

Cool, thanks for the info! I wish the train depot was still there. I remember seeing a picture of a depot on an abandoned train depot site and wondered where in Circleville it was

Your comment actually got me going to the "way back research" so I looked in the 1962 official guide and this line went from Trinway to Morrow and short of Washington Courthouse I didn't recognize any of the city names as they're all small towns. It's claim to fame was apparently to be the cutoff to Cincinnati. We had one here in Wisconsin that was built late and abandoned early as it was a cut-off for a number of passenger trains but just served small agricultural towns the C&NW Elroy to Sparta.

@@paulbergen9114 I remember being in Morrow, Ohio when the railroad was there. There was a wye right in town and a train station. Its a bike trail now and I used to ride my bike on the trail when I lived in Loveland Ohio

curve shots are the best because you can one side of train then the train heads directly at you; then as it curves, you get the other side of the train. something about the train barreling at you and then making the turn.

I really like that old history and the old spurs. The first one did you get a roll date?,, the one you got 1941,the 47,,that's so cool..there's your house Brian! Lol.. door by the tracks. We had alot back when I was a kid in our town. Most gone now😒 we had grain elevators, flour mill that's still there!! There could be a leftover spur in there. Also was the Gebhard brewery in Morris Part of a spur to the old paper mill here. It was so cool I saw a switch engine run between the Illinois river and i and m canal which is now a towpark path from Chicago to at least Utica IL. I wonder if there's anything on our old flour mill and Gebhard brewery around late 1800s on Google ..Great shot Brian on that train coming at us on the curve.. Great history there!👍be safe✝️thankyou for your time and videoes with always a thumbs up.

I was wondering if that GE Centercab you mentioned was the one that recently came to RI to be refurbished and used on a scenic railway & dinner train, but after locating that spot in Circleville on Google Maps, the satellite picture shows an empty spot where you said the loco was. 😕

That circle house is the Gregg-Crites Octagon House. You can search it and it even has a Wikipedia page. It was moved and it used to be where the Walmart is. I think it was built in the 1860s. It may be older than the Civil War. Circleville is an awesome place for trains.
