Inflation has caused price increases over the past three years of about 30% on virtually everything I buy today -- 20% at the very least. Inflation is killing us. Now, add to that a HUGE number of people moving to places like Florida (statistically two cars per household) and you have a much higher number of wrecks, and for an insurance company, higher risk per driver.

I agree. On I75 there is a wreck pretty much every day. I have lived in a few different states and I have never seen worse drivers then I have experienced in Florida. Another issue is the vehicles them selves. You have no vehicle inspection in Florida so a lot of vehicles are dangerous. Things like jacked up pickups with huge tires spewing stones and such at other vehicles as well as poorly maintained vehicles with rotten bald tires and other mechanical issues all hurtling down the highways. It is like watching an idiot fest roaring down Florida's highways. Also the condition of the roads reminds me of something I would see in rural Romania. And, the traffic law enforcement is hit and miss. I once forgot about a speed zone that was where the speed dropped from 65 to 55 and I was doing almost 70. A person passed me in the left lane doing at least 80 and we both passed through the speed trap and neither of us was pulled over. I mean, the one guy doing 80 in a 55? Tailgating seems to be the normal way of driving in Florida. It is also why there are pile ups on the highways like I75. Of course, If there is an accident, they make sure to block off every lane of the highway for hours. Duh?

People are complaining about attorneys filing lawsuits against insurance companies, and completely overlooking the fact that we have a for-profit insurance industry whose goal is to maximize profits to shareholders. That means charging you the customer as much as they think they can get away with, and paying out as little as legally required so they can keep dividends up. They give us the old "We deserve the profits because we took the risk" line, but avoid actually ever taking a risk. Insurance is the scummiest industry in America, and we have stockholm syndrome for it. If you want attorneys to stop suing insurance companies, make insurance companies tighten their own belt and get to work insuring people instead of making excuses so they can keep paying off shareholders.

@Hogtown1986 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, you don’t know what you’re talking about. Insurers almost always pay more in claims than they take in premiums, but investment income provides some profitability. If stocks are flat or lose, insurers lose money. Everyone has their hand out for the insurance money. Body shops, lawyers, chiropractors and crooked doctors.
@briansomething5987 Жыл бұрын
Only problem with that theory is that many of the largest insurers (eg State Farm and any company with 'Mutual' in the name) are not for-profit. They are 'mutuals', which mean they are owned by the policyholders. It makes no sense for a mutual to try to make a profit, as that money would just go back to the people who paid it in the first place. And since insurance is a competitive business, the for-profit insurance companies can't just jack up their rates or they will lose business to the mutuals. So nice rant, but completely wrong.

We have an amatuer radio net every morning with hundreds of other radio operators and ANY incident that would involve insurance is so rare and spread out over the state insurance companies risks are so mitigated one really wonders why we need it and why our premiums have jumped so high? It's because the workers demand more pay so they don't suffer high food and gas like retires do and so officers and investors don't either. The only people suffering from hyper inflation are those on fixed incomes. I did get a $30 raise for 2024. Maybe I can buy some eggs.

Rates for Fl insurance, home and auto, are skyrocketing way faster than inflation. Because the legislature and governor work for the insurance companies, not for their constituents. Also, insurers take premiums and invest them. When markets are down (as they have been due to rising interest rates), and insurers' bets don't pay off, premiums get raised to cover their losses. That they are allowed to do this goes back to the first point.

I can get anywhere on it so owning and maintaining a car with all the attendant expenses is foolish (for me). I rent. I have a rent controlled apartment where the rents can only increase by a small percentage each year. As I said in the previous comment I have no upkeep or maintenance expenses-that's all on the property owner. I have a 220$ a year rental insurance policy and my rent works out to 24% of my income. Utilities are minimal and then phone and internet. No I am NOT throwing money away by renting. The new York Times had an excellent article a few years back where they broke down the TRUE costs of home ownership. First you NEVER really own it. Property taxes for one. Then your mortgage payments begin with interest payments for many years and as you build equity you are only breaking even usually. Then there's upkeep, insurances and nowadays maybe HOA fees. So by the time you PAY off the house, you've paid many other things to. So even if the house doubles in assessed value in thirty years when you subtract all of the carrying costs of home ownership etc. all you've done is really invested in a savings account if you sell at the right time. Then if you under 55 you have the capital gains tax which eats up a portion of your equity.

Just remember one thing when it comes to insurance (and it doesn't matter whether you're talking about auto, homeowners, or any other property insurance). If the company you're paying premiums to won't pay your claim when you do have one, you're paying too much for it. It's not just about the cheapest rates; you need to ensure the company that insures you is going to pay their claims as well. If that means you have to pay more premium for that insurance, you aren't really paying more--you're paying what you need to pay to ensure that you're being made whole at the end of the day.

I had to have brain surgery, was in a coma for a month and in the ICU for almost 3 months. Couldn't walk or talk when I first woke up. You're exactly right, you're legally required to pay a company that doesn't have to pay you. I'd never filed an insurance claim in the 12 years that I've owned my house but it sustained over 100k in damage from Ida and they refused to pay. Now I still have to insure a house that I can't file a claim on unless it burns down because it's too damaged to file a claim for anything other than that. I took out a policy 2 months ago and paid 2600, they then raised the premium after I paid to 3700 and sent a letter to my bank and they paid them without my consent.

I got hit on intersection (nothing too serious, just need to replace both doors on left side but you wouldn't be able to say why if you looked at it - it looked only like scratched but internal structure was damaged so it wouldn't be safe anymore to use those doors). Sure why not, the culprit had insurance. When I went to a recommended company by insurance for repairs, they checked it and the bill was €4500 for 2 new doors and paint, nothing else - no other repair, no chassis damage, just the doors replaced by a new ones. More than 1/4th of the original car price. And I was like WTF.

@NuSpirit_ its not that simple. They have to pay for the part itself, then make a profit and charge for labor. Mechanic labor charges are expensive. They already had to spend time diagnosing your car and checking everything over. Putting on a new door isn't just "unscrewing it." There are electrical wires that all have to be connected on each door. You don't understand the work that goes into it, therefore you think that price isn't justifiable. Google says average car door replacement is $500 to $2500 per door which is €471 to €2355 so... yeah. The price you quoted fits within that. It's completely reasonable
