Everything was sent, and then a month or so later, they threatened to cut off her survivor benefits if she didn't send the forms that she had already sent. I was livid. We resent everything, and they had no issues. If that didn't work I was going to fly to Indiana personally. People grieving shouldn't have to deal with any bs whatsoever. They are already dealing with enough. This poor lady should have been treated much better.

I have lots of sympathy for you and your mother in settling your father’s estate. DFAS is NOT the easy process for a SBP beneficiary to claim the survivor annuity. I am very happy that the Board had rendered my claims for full annuity. Was a very long stressful wait.

@mikejohn0088 I always use a trackable delivery option. I didn't think anything of it because of the time it took them to say they hadn't received it. I think it is a particular issue with DFAS because I have read horror stories of people sending documents numerous times through fax and mail. The reason we sent it via mail is because they weren't receiving our faxes, and we tried multiple machines. I know they have a manpower shortage, but it was ridiculous. I have had to contact other government agencies to send invoices and other sensitive paperwork via fax or mail for my job and have never had a problem with them receiving it.

I'm a financial advisor and this is extremely common. I deal with an excessive amount of paperwork and unnecessary delays - because the insurance companies don't want to pay up. As I've always said, insurance is just like gambling. You're putting money in, hoping that one day it will still be there or it will pay whatever claim you have, such as auto insurance or home insurance, or in Trudy's case, life insurance. Your money is put into a large pool, so whenever it needs to be paid out to anyone filing a claim, there's enough there, and then some. And yes, I have heard that they don't like to pay out, thus keeping your money WITH interest in THEIR bank--not yours.
@jip23021 сағат бұрын

It’s reality, though. I helped my mom when my dad died because she was so distraught and was in the moderate stage of dementia. It’s a nightmare getting through all the red tape, so be sure you have a child with power of attorney-we did two so my sister and I could show our other siblings that both of us signed for everything and the proof was times two. If we didn’t have POA’s, it would have all been on Mom’s shoulders and she was so overwhelmed and sad. Make sure you have a will no matter how small your parents’ “estate.” It’s creepy how kids and grandkids make vague claims of items or savings. No matter how well family sticks together and gets along, when there’s a death, some family gets weird and it can turn into horrible dynamics. A will and power of attorney are essential and critical. Document everything. Photo all documents. Keep your parent feeling safe and supported at such a sad time-be strong even though you are grieving too. It’s an honor to help our parents.
@noturningbackever49321 сағат бұрын
@@ggrace1133 We call those who suddenly come out of the woodwork, even after years of no contact, very little contact, or even frequent contact "VULTURES," because they show up, claiming that dad or mom "promised me their jewelry," or "money" or "valuables" of some sort. Something a vulture would do--swoop down to lay claim to the pickings, whatever it is. When my grandmother died, two of her adult children went into her trailer to cart off whatever they could for themselves AND their own children, while my mother (grandma's third child) was busy hosting all the people that came to give their condolences at my mother's house (I was already married, so it's her and my dad's house) serving lunch to the crowd. While my mother was doing that, they were over there picking through whatever they wanted, not caring about waiting for her to pick things she wanted; to her, it could have waited, but to them, they were anxious to get whatever they could. One excuse given was that grandma's son--who showed up after six years of never being there, the last time being when his dad (my grandfather)died--taking whatever he could fit in the suitcase from grandma's house, because he had to "fly back home the next day." Grandma's daughter (my aunt) claimed that grandpa "promised" my cousin (her son) the car. He passed away six years earlier than grandma. Cousin was 13 at the time, so it had to sit in their driveway until he turned 17. Then there was the mink stole my grandma owned: that was given to my girl cousin, who at that time was the youngest granddaughter, passing over me, who is the older granddaughter. Then there were other items, some of which held a lot of value--same story: they were "promised" to so and so. I was happy that my grandma DID promise me the hand sewn Last Supper. I didn't even want or ask for anything--not my place--but she made it known to all three of her children that I get that. It's hanging up in my kitchen for the past 43 years. Even with a will or Advanced Directive, if anyone has the house key or knows the combination to the front door keypad, they will raid the house before the deceased has been buried\cremated or whatever form of final disposition they chose. We plan on changing the locks to our home, since one of ours will physically arrive before the other one will. We have it set up with the Executor to do this. It's the only way to be fair to all involved.

That company thought they were going to give her the run around until she gave up. I'm so glad she's resilient. I'm glad she got her money.

The "we need more info" is very common practice with insurance companies.

same here with my mother who suppose to get my father's pension who also worked in NY but for the city. It's been 3 months and each time more information is needed. We have a lawyer. I did not know about this kind of nightmare. In the meantime my mom depends on her children. What happens to elderly people who have no children?

IMO - When one becomes older it often takes more time to tackle financial and legal issues. These companies know exactly what they are doing: preying on helpless seniors.

Widow puts in her claim: months go by . . . 'Claim? What claim?' News team call it in: half a day and a couple hours later . . 'Oh, silly me . . . your claim is right where I am sitting.'

They weren't sent the forms until mid august. They take 16 days to process, so the end of August. The forms were wrong, so they reached out to the client to have her correct them. The same client that took 3 months the first time to get the forms in. Instead of filling in the forms correctly she went to the news. Then the company caved immediately. They didn't want to delay the process, and probably skipped some steps because she complained. There is no story here, woman or her lawyer messed up a form.

When are we going to make some laws saying if they don't hold up their end of the bargain then banks will be charged or fined?

Typical insurance company policy - immediately deny all claims, hoping the claimant will just roll over and say "ok".
