Just found a moving eye owl clock new in the box! Finding it made me SO curious about it's history - thank you! Kanu's creations are still bringing joy in 2023. ❤️🦉

Wow! I have a Poppo “pigeon” clock I bought at my grandfather’s estate sale. This was the cuckoo clock my mother bought through the Army BX in Germany in the early 1960’s and had it mailed to her in the US while my father & my family were in the US Army stationed in Germany. Ha! My mother always thought that was an authentic German cuckoo clock, as did I. Funny, but nice to hear the real history behind the maker. My clock is in need of repair and I will be looking for someone around the Springfield, MO area who may be able to repair it.
@time4clocks11 ай бұрын
Very nice back story on your Poppo clock! Thank you! Hope you will be able to find a good honest repair person. You might do a search for the NAWCC, for a Springfield chapter, who can put you in touch with someone. That is the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors. Happy Holidays! 😁

I was looking for a tutorial on how to remove the hour hand that seems to be clamped on with some kind of rivet on my Poppo Snoopy clock from the 80's and stumbled upon your video, didn't expect to learn about the history of this clock maker so this was a pleasant surprise, thank you for sharing!
@time4clocks Жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed the video! I'm not familiar with your clock but generally, modern clock hands are held on with a nut that unscrews to the left. An actual rivet could be a problem or it might just be a plug that pulls off. Hope you can find what you are looking for by way of help. 👍
@ashchbkv6965 Жыл бұрын
@@time4clocks Yeah, the history definitely gave me a different perspective and made me see the value in it I didn't before. Appreciate your help, I did unscrew the nut on top and removed the minute hand with ease, but the hour hand has a different mechanism. I've decided to not risk damaging it (already broken a clip of the plastic module cover😅) and take it to someone qualified, just hope that the clock isn't too old and parts are still being made.
@time4clocks Жыл бұрын
@@ashchbkv6965 Knowing the prices charged for fixing clocks these days it will probably be cheaper trying to buy another one. Hour hands are usually press fit and most will lift straight off. Some will fit into a groove and have a slot on one end that can be widened a bit with a small screwdriver and then pulled off. Good luck! 😁
@ashchbkv6965 Жыл бұрын
@@time4clocks Ok I'm gonna give it another go then I'm taking it to someone who knows what they're doing, I don't have the confidence to not break it. Thank you again! 🤗🙏

what an amazing history lesson. just wow. THANK you for this jam-packed video (more like a history teacher lecture!) and your great sentiments on life, peace etc. I’m trying to create a Japanese skin for my clock app and am now going to try to produce something that feels aligned to or is an homage to this amazing lady and her Tezuko company.

I always admire people that have artistic ability and the creativeness to visualize their ideas like yourself, Emerson! I have an older video where I talked about clock history in Japan from the Meiji era if you are interested. Thank you for your kind words! 😸😸

Thank you - I will! You mentioned (I think?) a book about Kanu Mitsuhashi - can you share the name of that book? - I can’t find any info about her online. I’d love to read more about her life.
@time4clocks11 ай бұрын
@@EmersonArtwork The book was in Japanese. I do not recall the title. It was mentioned in an article I found on a Japanese website and read with the aid of google "translate the page to English" option on the browser.
@EmersonArtwork11 ай бұрын
@@time4clocks thank you! I found the book mention but looks like near impossible to find (online at least). By the way I see that some of their clocks use “greens leaves” for the hourly chime - is that the best most fitting song for a Tezuka homage clock or would a different Japanese song be more fitting (their national anthem?)
@time4clocks11 ай бұрын
@@EmersonArtwork I actually don't know about Greensleeves chime, unless it is a translated term they use, which could be anything. A chime clock would just strike a sequence of notes, a strike clock would just make a certain sound on a gong or on one or two chime rods, then a clock with a wind up music box would play a tune, so I'm at a loss what they are referring to. 😁

Hi Ab, It amazes me how you remember all that information to be able to recite it back. Yes it's true there is a lot of ugliness in the world and a lot of beauty. If only people would stop and look around it took me a long time to realise that, i love spring when everything comes into life. I look forward to seeing you working on your clocks i know you are busy at the moment with other things in your life Stay safe and all the best

Thank you, Paul, for taking the time to leave such a nice comment! I agree with you on spring, the flowers are amazing!! There are actually so many roses this year that I could smell them in the air today. That arched trellis with the roses in the intro for this video, was what I made for mother before she became ill a few years back. They remind me of happier times and help me press on. I plan to pick some for my next video. You take care of yourself!! 😸

Not all clocks, but the clocks I have do give me joy. With the history you found gives the clock special meaning now. Again, I will be waiting patently for the next video. Very interesting history. I've seen similar clocks of cats where the tail also moves as the pendulum. Do you know if there is any connection? Thanks 👍😀
@time4clocks Жыл бұрын
The moving eye or tail wag clocks had been made for some time in the west by various companies such as Lux and Keebler so it's possible the idea was copied in Japan for their own style of clock. The entire clock industry in Japan started by copying western style clocks so a connection in that regard is entirely possible. What the Japanese were good at doing was copying something and then modifying it to their own needs and sensibilities, which often resulted in a better product. 😸

Thank you for what you do . John from Canada .

Appreciate that John! I never had a Citizen clock, so I thank you for telling me that. That could account for the Poppo brand not ending well! You could always get a fish bowl. Sometimes those are nice, but changing the water can get to be a pain. When I was young I had a goldfish bowl and after the fish died, I kept the bowl because there was still a cute snail in there and I liked to watch him go up and down, up and down! Great fun for a nerd. 🤣🤣🤣
