Japan's Spartan race in the mountains of Niigata is considered one of the toughest races in Japan. 1,100m high with over 20 obstacles, I very foolishly attempted to run it.
🙏 Huge thanks to Nic at @JunkFoodJapan for making this happen! (& Angela!).

What Chris is doing is undoubtedly amazing, seems very fun and obviously has had very good effects on his health, but traditional fitness is still king as far as effort to gains ratio is concerned. @@TheMightySpurdo It can be the most efficient thing in the world in general, if a person doesn't want to do it then its rate of efficiency drops to zero. I signed up for a Spartan race near me right after watching your video. You're very motivating and inspiring. Thanks for introducing me to this because I'm a huge sucker for obstacle race yet I've never heard of Spartan race. Now I got a little over a month to turn myself from a couch potato into a built racer. Wish me luck... Edit: Just did this race yesterday. It was a lot of fun. While training for it, the rope climb was the easiest yet it turned out to be the hardest obstacle during the race due to how muddy and slippery the rope and our shoes were so I couldn't get any grip at all. Also got the worst leg cramp of my life, yay. The bucket carry was hell, so was the atlas stone. Couldn't even lift it at all. But aside from that I didn't have much trouble with the other parts. The rain and cold weather made some harder but none I couldn't overcome. It was so fun that I signed up for a Super right after I got home. Once again, thanks for introducing me to this new world I otherwise never would have found out about. It got me motivated and back to working out, which is great for my body. I know you probably won't read this comment but I still want to leave something in case you do.

It's painful to see Chris visibly struggling to stay motivated, while he's also doing a upbeat voice over of it. Can't wait to hear about it on the pod! (Also that rope prep was a bit rough, they taught him a fast/hard/muscle intensive rope technique instead of a less muscular but slower one. If you don't need speed, there's techniques where grip is the only real limiting factor.)
@AngelLita
@AngelLita Жыл бұрын
@@johnstonefield1935 aerial acrobat here: the rope climb they taught him is actually one of the two easiest climbs that a beginner can learn safely, primarily because you can climb even if you can't do a pull-up and even if your hand grip is barely there. The other basic easy climb where you don't do the foot lock would have been harder for him given the short amount of time because unless he got used to pressing the rope with his top foot he would have slid down way more than climbed up, exhausted his already tired arms even more and would have shot his grip.
@johnstonefield1935
@johnstonefield1935 Жыл бұрын
@@AngelLita By easy I meant easy on your muscles, not easier form wise. That is something I hadn't really considered though! I was taught that when all you care about is (muscle) strength or only getting up (relatively slowly) the best lock is a J hook (which he's going for) but with full leg wraps, where you wrap the rope around the leg you're going to stand on before running it under your foot. That's what we used when we climbed ropes with extra weight, or needed someone inexperienced to pass a rope climb test with as little strength and as low risk (of failure) as possible.

Proud of you man for taking your health seriously. For everyone watching, you'd be surprised how big a difference walking an extra 15 minutes a day, or doing pushups and sit ups at home makes. 4 years ago I started doing a bunch of little things to improve. Each year, I took it a little farther. I'm in much better shape now, so I know you can do it too.

Watching this journey whilst it's happening is so enlightening. Although we love the satirical humour and him constantly joking about his weight, he is doing amazing. If you see this Chris, even if you think you're not doing enough or find anything to criticise yourself on, you are doing so well. As someone who has a strong stance against fatphobia, I find it admirable that you can find motivation and think of your own health. I'm glad you're doing on your own terms and no one else's. Also, during this constant journey, it's so easy to criticise yourself and feel guilt over the little things. Whatever journey this takes you on, atleast you know you are trying/tried your hardest :) Goodluck on the rest of your journey and now it's time for a rest! (your body needs it!)
