Playthrough Rules:
1. Only my starter in battle
2. No items in battle*
3. No glitches or exploits*
4. No Double-Team TM before level 100*
Other rules:
-- *Pokeballs are allowed in battle when I need to catch an HM user
-- I play the game at 4x game speed (238 frames per second)
-- I allow myself to manipulate my starter (IVs, nature, HP type)
-- Using the bike for movement speed increases is banned (it can be used to obtain items)
-- Saving between league members is allowed
-- If the solo Pokemon faints and I choose to blackout it counts towards my reset counter
*Double-Team:
-- Almost every Pokemon can learn Double-Team through TM
-- The TM can be purchased in Celadon
-- Using it would centralize the meta
-- Every Pokemon would use it to overcome tough battles at lower levels
-- It raises evasion
-- It triggers the badge boost
-- Banning the TM allows Pokemon who learn it through level up to use it
-- I believe evasion is part of Pokemon and shouldn't be banned entirely
-- I don't want the videos to all be double-team spam though, that's not fun or entertaining
-- Only two Pokemon learn Double-Team through level up: Pikachu & Scyther
-- Minimize is the other evasion raising move, these Pokemon learn it through level up:
-- Clefairy, Clefable, Grimer, Muk, Chansey, Staryu

Re-upload: here's the story. I got the flu last week and because I didn't do my regular work Friday morning I accidentally uploaded this video alongside Houndoom. After someone notified me I got out of bed and switched it to private. However, when I made it public again today, it received very few views, likely because KZbin wasn't notifying people. So I'm re-uploading to make sure all of you fine people know where to find it!

Using Rest against Steven's Skarmory with your first set up could easily work, just using a Chesto berry instead of a Pecha berry 😁 Love your forays into gen III! You are, in fact, a fast learner (despite what you say)

It depends on what you need for Steven really If you need 4 moves for Steven you want pecha unless you outspeed n one hit skarmory, Chesto is if you need 3 moves for steven n not 4 otherwise this strategy is counterproductive If cradily is the only problem you want persim berry If neither of these are viable you want sitrus in ruby or sapphire or figy in emerald Also take in type boosting items if ranges are a problem

Great great quality, as always, and you're improving at dealing with 3rd gen mechanincs., such natures, abilities and held berries some tips: ghost is physical in this gen, so shadowball could have been a better option. Boosting items give you a 10% boost instead the 20% from gen4 , so they are not as usefuel. Persim berries or Cheri berries can be more useful. Return is a must have for a physical attacker. Never choosing a speed lowering nature.

Natures definitely add a wrench into the thought processes. I would personally lean towards either a negative attack or special attack for most Pokémon. Unless you think they’re gonna be a truly mixed set. You could also choose to grind some place that will give you a lot of a particular EV when forced to grind. There’s definitely a lot of moments where mindlessly grinding can be appealing to get faster levels but EV‘s can easily add so much to a stat.

@calebbevan

@@tsawy6 there are multiple options that can be explored. Shadow ball was never used. slightly different IV you could pick physical hidden type. giving you return, shadow ball , ???, and swords dance. we are nowhere near optimization on gen 3. i’m just throwing out some thoughts so more strategies can be explored.
@tsawy6
@tsawy6 Жыл бұрын
Mm, thinking now there weren't as many calm mind sweeps as I thought. Didn't work on Glacia, Sidney, or Wallace. Which really only leaves Drake. The best HP choice for him would have to be Rock, which isn't a terrible choice in general. Iunno, I think Dark is possibly still the go to. Rock doesn't help with that much, you can hit everything for neutral with normal/ghost, and having a special attack is good against some opponents. Tho in fairness, HP dark is only 10 more BP than Bite...
@Chronoflation
@Chronoflation Жыл бұрын
Better after Gen 4 when physical and special is determined by move and not type. When you have access to physical and special moves that will both be useful, leaving a poor defense with the negative nature could be better, or just going Serious and letting the neutral maintain your defenses while at the cost of a few KOs not happening with the stat you'd normally boost

Absol is such a bizarre Pokemon in Gen III, because its a physical glass cannon without the moves to really back it up. But in-game, a high Attack stat and Return are generally pretty good and it showed. I'm not what really to do about Steven. I don't think I agree Double Team is the way to go, I think actually it might have just been lucky. Absol just might need more levels so it can survive three Steel Wings and set-up on the Skarmory. A +6 Water Pulse should pretty easily KO the Armaldo at that point, its 120 based power versus 95. Being able to trade the Pecha Berry for maybe a Mystic Water or a Charcoal would also be an idea. For the rest of the fights, an additional option for Mightyena might be the White Herb. You can actually steal the White Herb from Flannery's Torkoal during her match, but I'm not sure how viable that is as a strategy since Torkoal can hit pretty hard (and I honestly don't know if the White Herb actually gets consumed like a berry if used in-game or not). A White Herb would be useful for negating Intimidate. Thief also doesn't have a ton of use cases in Gen III, there's mostly some Nuggets and Sitrus Berries to steal. Naughty nature was probably good enough, but I think maybe Rash might be better specifically for Steven. It's a bit hard to tell though. Would losing the extra Attack be bad for the rest of the game? It feels kind of hard to know, Natures feel very much a good by feel thing. The alternative option would be to grab a move like HP Fighting instead of HP Dark and just try to go for a full physical set with an Adamant Nature. I'm not sure that would have been better though, especially against Steven. Would Pecha Berry / SD / Shadow Ball / HP Fighting / Rest have worked for him? Maybe. I'm mostly just throwing ideas at the wall, but I think Absol has a ton of time to save. It's just a shame that its so fragile and weak to specifically confusion.

Against Armaldo a OHKO at +4 was possible at lvl. 71 (25 %) with water pulse. I don't know if that meant that you could win without the strategy change, but the main impediment would be gone. Also Chestoresto might be better than blanking a single toxin on Steven....

Naughty nature sounds good, since you have a wide special movepool. Speedrunners opt for Naughty mudkips, and I believe Naughty chimchars are popular for gen 4 runs (though don't quote me on that).

One thing I want you to consider in the future for your setups, maybe its mostly applicable to gen 1 Yellow runs, but having a segment on the screen to remind people what level up group a pokemon is in? Because it will breed context for levels at specific points in the games. Just consider if its possible is all, because you have so much valuable data for the viewer on the screen few others ever place it seems super effective to add as well. Likely wouldn't take much real estate screen wise.

I'm pretty sure Absol can learn Brick Break. If so, ghost+fighting = neutral against damn near everything. Pair that with Swords dance and Rest and you've got a winner. I always used to run Shadow Ball and Aerial Ace on my Absol in game, and it works well too.

There are lots of fights in this game where the persim berry is super useful! Basically all the villains have confusing moves, as you've noticed, also Norman and Juan! Plus there's actually quite a lot of persim berries lying around hoenn!

In general the difference between it's attack and special attack is so massive that you can mostly skip damaging dark type moves on it and use shadow ball. So you will get a more milage from it using a neutral normal type moves with decent power than super effective dark type moves, especially since crunch is not an option. And since ghost attacks use base attack in gen 3 and have very similar coverage- just get shadow ball asap and skip dark moves.

It's a shame that Absol's base 75 speed did no favors for it in competitive added with its lack of bulk (Jolly Nature is basically THE best Nature for it as a result)....but alas, then came Gen 4 with the split and Sucker Punch with the Super Luck ability... But then when he got his Mega in Gen 6, he ended up in Borderline Tier purgatory in Gen 7..... Such a depressing fate for such a badass Pokemon...I grew attached to this boi ever since its addition to the base Platinum and BW2 Pokedex and seeing it on Riley's team (it fits him quite well).

Naughty absol is best. Sometimes adamant is good if your not giving it special moves, but its kind of annoying when your using it for exclusive dark type. Absol is my favorite pokemon of this gen. I remember it was the first encounter on the route where it appears on my first playthough. Its something I always go out of my way for now. Shadow ball always the move I go with because it always goes in tandem with its dark type. That plus aerial ace and swords dance and bite for flinch cheese. Often times i replace bite with hyper beam. Cool seeing the diverse move pool I never use in action.

Absol was such a cool pokemon to encounter story wise in the Mystery Dungeon game I played : D fun to see challenge. Hows the spooky month treating you? Will you be trick or treating with the loved one or be the one to greet them this year? Might seem a random question, but for many this will be first time to do so since covid so I find its reasonable to ask some of my favorite KZbinrs.

@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon If you watch a horror movie thats well written/directed scene by scene try John Carpenters The Thing. It's my favorite movie in the genre and has so many minute details you miss even the 3rd or 4th time through. But if you're looking for a movie to have some goofy laughs and also do the guessing game of "what movie is this even" Try Dead Alive I believe its called. That's a movie where you see where all the budget went and its amazing and mystifying all in one. Of course you can be the real hero and pick up Scary Godmother. For whatever reason that's a tradition with my friends since it came out XD

Ah yes, Absol; a classic physical fighter Dark type pre-attack-and-special split dilemma. I never even noticed how insanely strong it was because Absol rarely popped up, would often use a dark type attack or be destroyed quickly due to it's middling defences. Like many, I love Absol's design, but I do expect you to struggle given it's stats. 3:56 - Young me kept insisting Razor Wind must be a good flying type move given it's name and 1 turn charge, so had it on my Pidgey. Young me was a fool. 6:12 - Given it learns Zap Canon as an almost signature move, I always thought Nosepass was supposed to have good special attack. Strange that it's the same as it's physical attack. Also, never once encountered one in the wild; they are annoying to find. 13:19 - Absol is the disaster Pokémon; often considered a sign of bad luck and you've been particularly unlucky so far. 17:10 - Yeah, Torkoal's typing took me by surprise the first time as well. Macargo could have easily been a Fire-Bug instead (or at least Slugma being one before evolving into Fire-Rock... as well, we got Larvesta eventually). 23:54 - Oh yeah, Tropious has such an awesome design. I had a decent bit of fun using one in my Pokémon Emerald playthrough. I look forward to seeing your video on it. 33:58 - It would have been rather befitting if the Absol art to the side had confused swirly eyes throughout this playthrough. Poor disaster dog was ever so clumsy. 39:36 - "One of the strongest" I suppose if we're talking about power, but given all the roadblocks and numerous resets, I'm surprised you're coming out of the Absol run so spirited. Perhaps I'm misremembering the other Gen 3 runs here and that Absol's reset count + time here isn't so bad. After all, Absol did blitz through Tate and Liza, whom are usually the major obstacle in these Emerald runs. 47:09 - Oh, so Absol really did well in the end; even it's Reset count isn't that drastically different compared to your other Pokémon. I'm surprised!
