Xiangqi actually has a Cannon piece that moves like a rook but can only take if there's another piece between it and the piece it's taking

It's a cool game! Tbh I only learned about it recently when I read a recent news story where someone got caught cheating at an OTB Xiangqi tournament using the method that Hans Niemann was infamously accused of using. Sad that someone was able to almost get away with that, but either way it's still an interesting game in the same family as chess.@@epicchess2021

Both games you analyzed today were great. I enjoyed this game more. The Alireza gme was probably a bit more cerebral, but I like it when Hikaru beats Magnus. Not that I'm a Magnus hater-- he is a joy to watch. It just feels good to see Hikaru's grind pay off sometimes. He's become SO good at making it look like he's not using an engine when he plays online, which is very interesting to watch.

It would have different importance if it was OTB FIDE world blitz championships deciding game. But in online commercial game,not even FIDE, pushing drawish position too far and losing because of it - I doubt he loses any sleep over mistakes like that

Hikaru is a really good example of psychology. He would rather swindle 1 game than win 10 outright. It's when his back is against the wall that he's most dangerous. Normally Magnus can simply play best moves like a mini computer, but if Hikaru makes his traps sufficiently long and complex enough, they can win.

The official word for the piece "rook" is actually "cannon" in Serbian. Our word is "top" which basically means "cannon". :)

At 9:51 couldn't Magnus have forked the bishop and pawn by moving the knight to d5? I guess Hikaru could just sacrifice the bishop, and take the pawn? Would that have nullified the threat?

.@023achilles Apparently, I only looked superficially. You are quite right. So the fork was a good spot. Goodonya! Rxb3 would lose the bishop, as you said, but it looks like it could still be a draw. So either Magnus missed it, even with all that time left on his clock (4.9 seconds) or he knew that Hikaru would know how to play his rook and king to a 50 move draw and he still wanted to play for the win.

Trying to make a hikaru feel better after his total meltdown over the anti cheating Crusade by his is peers, which ironically him and Magnus ignited themselves? Lmao I'll never forget when Magnus insisted an Arbiter be in nakamura's room for a meltwater tournament and Nakamura got smashed and vowed never to enter another one again. Right now he is trembling that the website is going to start taking more aggressive measures like that. Hahaha. And maybe people don't realize as Fabi just indirectly pointed outn organizers of tournaments only ask Nakamura to do these things. He's the one that gets asked to show his ears he's the one that gets asked to have Arbiters in his room, Kramniks concerns about Nakamura are simply more public, but shared by many of nakamura's fellow players for years even if they can't admit it publicly.
