It's funny, I think most people see Lestat's main problem is his inhumanity - I kind of see it as the opposite. Same goes for all vampires too. If anything, they seem like people in steroids - the love is enhanced, the sadness, the loneliness but the cruelty too.
@FrankFreezy_Ай бұрын
You couldn't have said it any better. Everything is enhanced. They had all these feelings and emotions while they were human, their vampireism just Amplified it
@kaylarodrigues7892Ай бұрын
this is an aspect I wish was brought up more! if anything one of the most characteristic parts of Ricean vampires is their humanity, or humanity amplified
@jaginaiaelectrizs6341Ай бұрын
It's his humanity, armed with his inhuman capabilities.
@charlierayedАй бұрын
But that's what makes him so inhumane. His ability to feel all of that and not have any compassion for that feeling he put on others. Louis feels all of that but chooses to try and be "humane" (sometimes) whereas if Lestat feels that he does his best not to show it which, by definition, makes his main problem inhumanity.

I’m a book reader, but it’s so annoying when other book readers forget or don’t wish to acknowledge that a book to screen adaptation is its own thing. It’s all “source material…” and it’s like please chill, it’s a story being crafted by a different person, a different time, judge it on its own merits.
@clarem8784Ай бұрын
It's not even the books... I honestly cannot make a comment about the show because I've gone through season 2.. I haven't read the books in a long time and I don't really remember them. If I made any comment about any characters, my perception of the characters are colored by what happened throughout both series because there are characters arcs and characters change. If they didn't it would be a really bad series. And it isn't a really bad series.. it's a great one. But if I comment on what anyone's like and what they become... It's really unfair to someone starting the journey-- because you deserve to have the same journey I had with this series.

Im so sorry about the spoilers and hints, people have no self control and want you to rush through to the end where you have all the answers and information. The writers think we’re smart enough to get the point AND let the tale seduce us so I wish fans would give reactors the same grace. I love that at the base of this story is domestic struggles and family dynamics. You’re so right about the length of time and the misery that lasts, that’s why the loneliness is so painful. The loss of Louis’ family is so sad. And I think he feels like he’s been so estranged from them that it’s already over, but then Grace’s final goodbye hits him and it’s Actually real. It’s so tragic and I appreciate you being able to still empathize with Lestat even though his actions are horrible. Obvs in real life an abusive partner will just say things like that, but I really do believe that Lestat, the fictional character we know and love, would’ve left Louis alone forever if he asked. Unfortunately Louis can’t say it and he won’t, but that just adds to the tragic nature of their love I think.
@FrankFreezy_Ай бұрын
Appreciate you. Hopefully my intro in this video will help people remember not to spoil or rush me. Absolutely, that's why I love this show so much. it has a lot of human elements and Dynamics but just with vampires. The final goodbye with Grace was heartbreaking. Lestat is a very tragic character who deserves empathy, but for me it's just difficult to give that empathy when he's actively traumatizing other characters. I'd rather focus on and center the people actively being harmed. They do have a tragic love indeed. Louie loves him but can't say it, lestat loves Louie (in his own way) but might never hear it from Louie and that is heartbreaking AF

I finished this show today and I'm completely obsessed so I ran to see what people online are saying about it and found your reactions. I've watched all them and I absolutely love them! I love the nuance with which you discuss the characters and the actions being shown to us, and I relate a lot to your viewing experience as I had practically the same impression of the character as you are having, especially Lestat. I've got to admit, that when I started the show I was quite confused over the abundance of Lestat love when to me he came off mostly as a controlling, manipulative, and abusive person (while I could still appreciate his charisma and genuine moments of emotion.) I feel like you really understand the characters are making a lot of good observations as you go along, you're just so fun to watch! Claudias relationship to her vampirism and its impact on her relationship with lestat is so interesting because she's so good at being a vampire. She's an absolute apex predator. In the last episode she lures men to their deaths off of pure instinct and she doesn't need the corrections and guidance louis does in this aspect. This is where her and lestat connected the most in the last episode and hes so proud of her, so when she comes up against the confines of her vampirism and longs for her human life, louis can relate but lestat can't and he sees it as ingratitude. But he also doesn't offer her the space or patience that he gave louis (partially in my opinion, because he's jealous of her. he's giving very much Mommy Dearest vibes this episode)

I was really surprised to see how empathetic you were with Lestat this episode! I felt pretty much the same way when I was watching it, deeply sad for how long he has been desperately hoping for Louis to reciprocate his feelings to no avail. And now that frustration has culminated in him lashing out to an extreme degree, like a human abuser x1000, hurting the person he loves most because he is so hurt. Lord, where are couples therapists when you need them 😂 Also, the fight is the first time we see just how much more powerful Lestat is than Louis; it's not even close, he doesn't have a mark on him while Louis is shattered. The power imbalance in the relationship is insane.

This episode was WILD! It's crazy how before we thought their fights were bad and now we saw how bad BAD it can get. And obviously how bad the world and other vampires can be, through Claudia. What you said about how their feelings are amplified is so real. When we get mad or frustrated, we do something crazy like throw shit, they throw each other from the sky. Also, I'm so sorry the hints are taking the full impact away from you. The show is truly complex and makes us rethink how we see the characters all the time. The show does that, no need for hints. I can relate a lot to both Louis and Claudia because of my own experiences and I really appreciate the way this show handles these topics, it's heartbreaking and raw but there's something very human and truthful behind it. This show is not afraid to let monsters be monsters, let them do things that break away from our ethical framework of human morality, but it still urges us to reflect on the character's actions. It makes us realise that really, vampires as depicted here, are not so different from us. We can be cruel and violent, and vampires can too, the scale is simply amplified due to their powers, life-spans and experiences, but the core emotions are still the same. Vampires in general, but especially in this show, hold a mirror the most monstrous parts of ourselves and makes us empathise with them, by forcing us to recognise the humanity within the monster it makes us confront the monstrosity within the human. It can be twisted at times, but I think it's handled beautifully, and makes the show such a stimulating watch that you can literally not stop thinking about. Like I said, I can see myself in some of the characters, when it comes to Louis I can see my experience of the loss of my brother reflected on his own, I know his pain, and Jacob Anderson does a masterful job at portraying it. You are also so right when you mentioned how easy it is for people to relate to situations occurring in the show, like the fight between Louis and Lestat. As someone who grew up with an abusive father that was a difficult scene to watch and I could really connect with Claudia's fear there. So sometimes the show is definitely hard to watch but I love it nonetheless. To put it simply for a show about monsters, interview with the vampire is incredibly human and I've fallen in love with it. I hope that you are enjoying it just as much, and that people haven't soured the experience too much with their spoilers and hints, I know how infuriating that can be.

You don't have to watch the movie or read the books to understand the show the writers do amazing job of making the spirit of the books into the TV show and they do a good job of you making you understand. every question that you have it will be answered later on or maybe you miss it so you have to watch it over again to catch it. Sorry that people have been saying things that could be spoiler-y! I feel like so many fans of this show seem to think that sharing information or reveals from the books or offering clarification on your questions and opinions beyond the scope of the episodes you've seen already is somehow okay and doesn't "count" as spoilers, which is no fun. I hope that dies down, but if it continues, you might have to avoid the comments if people can't respect that 😭 I feel so much for Claudia in her rant to Louis...its sad because Louis previously said to Lestat that he "took his life" which is true to an extent because there was definitely an element of emotional manipulation at play when Lestat turned Louis. But Louis was still a grown man who did say yes. Claudia was a child. Near death sure, but Louis took it upon himself to have Lestat turn her out of guilt (and loneliness just like Lestat) without her consent at all. And now she's paying the price. So glad Louis was able to take accountability for that towards the end. I love how brazen Daniel is...he totally deserved that little scene of Louis agitating his Parkinsons, but I respect his lack of fear or rather audacity DESPITE whatever fear he's got to have considering their past. I get how people feel for Lestat when he's telling Louis that he was waiting for him to love him and to a degree I also have some sympathy for him. But I've always felt that Lestat's...issues made it so that he just couldn't already see that Louis also loves him. Or that Louis just wasn't loving him in the way he wanted. Louis is dealing with so much repression and trauma that likely plays a huge part in how he shows his affection. The very fact that Louis has stayed with Lestat for so long should've said enough imo. And the fact that wouldn't say he doesn't love Lestat even when he's being held miles and miles in the air, after being hurt beyond compare. Louis has had plenty of faults in this show so far and he definitely took an active role in antagonizing Lestat, but nothing will compare to Lestat taking out his pain on him like he did smh just such a toxic couple. And I love them lol Love love your thoughts and commentary on this crazy show. Can't wait for the next episode!

this episode had all those IWTV book purist in a riot! they couldn't fathom Lestat being abusive to louis, some of them still can't grasp that this show is an adaptation of the book and NOT a complete copy of the books they've read also the people that spoil are usually upset you don't have the same opinion they have regarding the story
@Noxofspades-lh7bjАй бұрын
I haven't even read the books but i understand why they were upset. It wasn't just that lestat was more gentle to Claudia+Louis in comparsion to mostly everyone else. It was also because the flying powers was used drastically different way. Lestat would take Louis flying and it was happy and romantic. And the drop was between Armand + Lestat in the books. Not to mention, there wasn't narrative foreshadowing in the show that hints that Lestat wanted to physically harm Louis, Especially to not that extent. And considering they completely fine the time period change, Louis+Claudia's race change,Louis's personal struggles change, Daniels entire character change, Armand's Storyline change etc (there's so much more i can list). I do think they can fathom the fact that this isn't a direct copy of the book and they are open to adaptations.
@BuniverselfАй бұрын
@@Noxofspades-lh7bj so far before episode 5, lestat has been abusive in his efforts to obtain Louis companionship from the very 1st episode, literally killed somebody who louis would talk to in his times of loneliness (ms.lily) so the implications that lestat would do ANYTHING (even physical harm) so louis would always run to him in the end was always there & regarding the flying moment between them in episode 5 that actually was a nod to the IWTV movie where lestat fly's louis into the sky (maybe even bites him, I can't remember fully) and drops him into a bed of water so idk where your armand and lestat altercation is rooted from because I'm not familiar with the books. many things you named the book readers were "completely fine" with actually is not true at all because before the episodes even aired, the series was routinely criticized and bashed for all the liberties they took upon the original book, it wasn't until after season 1 the book purist actually came around to all the changes because they realized those changes wasn't "Just because" but that it actually added more to the story overall
@Noxofspades-lh7bjАй бұрын
@@Buniverself Sure, Lestat has been abusive to louis. But that's always been more emotional/psychological. That's Lestat's character in general. The show did an excellent job giving it so much time in the series and making it nuanced. And in comparsion, they didn't seem to give much time or nuance to the physical abuse. It just went from 0-1000 once and that was it. Did Lestat have reasons why he turned physically abusive? In theory, yes. But again, it was the execution and graphic nature of it. Many ppl have different reasons, one of them being them having PTSD, and it ruined their mental health. NOT because of lestat turning physically abusive, but because it was so graphic and so long drawn out. And speaking from personal experience with PTSD and speaking to others, we can handle any triggering topic, even if it's the premise of a story, as long as it's executed and framed well aka scenes not being drawn out and explicit. And regarding to the drop, i don't see how it can be comparable to the film other than the fact that lestat used his flying powers. in the film, louis was depressed and welcomed death cuz he lost his wife +kid. And lestat bit him, flying in the air to give him a taste what it would be like to be a vampire and what death is. And like you said, he dropped him water, not harming him at all. In the books (i think it was vampire lestat), it's where Lestat+ armand were fighting and as punishment armand dropped him from an extremely large height and broke all of Lestats bones. And i know there was backlash before this adapation was released over the changes. That happens with any media, especially now when adaptations+remakes are notoriously not that good.. But because of how the things were executed and written, those exact same ppl were like "nevermind this is pretty good". But from what I've seen, those ppl ate their words from the pilot alone, not after the entire season aired. Sure some were still a bit hesitant the season went on, trying to see if the show was going to be as good as the pilot. But again, i mostly think that has something to do with shows having good first few episodes only to take a nosedive in quality. And it probably means more to the book fans cuz they love the universe. (Maybe you've seen different things, I'm Just sharing my experience. The fandom is HUGE afterall). My point is that when it comes to any changes, execution is key. I've seen it happen in fandom and speaking to ppl in general. A lot of ppl are open to changes in adaptations, as long as it's done well/ suits their writing tastes. Another example of ppl loving most changes but not a couple is the last of us show. They changed of how the zombies worked, they changed some of the character's race, added a couple new characters and added subplots to the story. Not to mention they MAJORLY changed the backstories and dynamic of like 4 different characters from the game. And yet everyone LOVED those changes. However, they didn't like a side character because of how she was written.. They loved the IDEA of her story, but felt it wasn't executed well enough to their tastes. So would it be fair to say that the reason no one liked her because "they can't handle changes"? It's fine to disagree with writing of a show. Some ppl like yourself has no problem with episode 5. Thought it made sense and took it in stride. And some ppl (both book fans and none book fans) do have a problem with it because of their writing tastes and personal experiences. But to immediately lump all those ppl into the same box as those VERY EXTREME book purist, just seems a bit shallow. And isn't engaging with the actual different reasons why ppl had a problem with this other than "they can't handle changes" Again, Its fine to like something that other ppl have a problem with. But I don't understand why ppl get so defensive about this to the point they either are like "you are just a book purist who can't handle changes". Or even openly mocking abuse survivors for not being able to stomach the ending, being like "LMAO, you're upset about there being violence in a vampire show"

your discussions of this show are always super insightful, it's amazing to listen to your thoughts on it! something that always strikes me about this episode is, of course, that fight at the end. your take on it was really interesting, how lestat wants louis to love him but he doesn't feel like he's getting that from louis; lestat is coming from a very hurt and vulnerable place. but it's so interesting how the show explores that even though lestat has reasons to feel hurt, he still hurts louis and claudia (very severely! it's kind of hard to watch!). lestat holds power over them, both as their maker and a more powerful vampire, and as a white man in 1930 louisiana. he feels hurt, and he takes it out on them, then blames his temper/louis not loving him the way he wants. you had mentioned recognizing abusive traits in lestat, and it stands out very strongly in this episode! idk, I just think it's really interesting to see how the creators of iwtv balance his character and add all this fascinating dimension. this show is so good, and I'm glad that you like it and are taking the time to give it the thought it deserves! sorry if my comment makes no sense haha

As a Lestat fan (and a fan of morally grey characters & villains in general), i wish people would just respect that it's OKAY if other people don't like your favorite character 😂 I also wish they would trust not only you, but the writers, to pick up on and convey Lestat's nuance. As you said, Lestat's origins make him a fascinating, nuanced, sometimes even empathetic figure, but it doesn't condone his actions. It is okay for some viewers to not like such characters. You don't have to justify villains just because you like them. I love so many characters and stories in fiction that I would never condone or excuse IRL. Also, this is the best written show on TV currently. They have the skills to convey each characters' complexities but it takes time. If one hates or loves a character in episode one, & then feels differently by episode 5, the writers did that on purpose!! Trust the process, commenters!! 😂

It's interesting how so many people agonize over Lestat and Louis killing people (the moral dilemma of it all) but nobody seems phased by Claudia's complete lack of concern for human life. Me included! I'm guilty of this myself! I know people give her huge latitude because she is 14 (again, me included) but really a normal 14 year old should have an ethical dilemma when it comes to bloody murder. So far, it seems like she doesn't care AT ALL. She cares when she personally likes someone, but seems to have zero empathy otherwise. In this episode she is taking trophies like a proper psycho. Do we not care when it comes to Claudia? If not, why, I wonder?
@--ArcAngel--Ай бұрын
@@cullenarthur8879 yeah and i could be okay with a callous attitude if that's the stance someone is taking (like 'hey, they are vampires, it's a guilt free human buffet!') but frequently those same people are incredibly harsh on Louis and Lestat for every human meal even tho both of them are far more conscientious than Claudia in that regard. I don't quite understand how we get to the double standard so easily with any intellectual honesty, i guess.

I wish people who have already seen the show would at least label things as spoilers. Even, like you said, not straight up plot spoilers but spoilers about how people feel about certain characters/relationships can still spoil the experience. And if people want to label a comment as “SPOILER” and then return enough that the spoiler can’t be seen, that’s great cause then you can go back and have those conversations after you’ve watched it all

Everyone focuses on the last scene so it might be overlooked or not fully noticed, but it's interesting how Lestat seems genuinely scared of 'the old world vampires' and doesn't want them to go looking for them. I love watching your reactions because they are so thoughtful and measured. I think that this is my favorite show ever, but some parts of it are just painful to watch. I feel such conflicting emotions about the sky-drop scene in particular. It is so horrific but at the same time the music and cinematography are so beautiful, even romantic. Lestat is absolutely monstrous and wrong to drop Louis, but still, I feel so sad for him. It was a shock to realize that for 20 years, Louis had never once told Lestat that he loved him. Like you said-I just don’t know how they would come back from this. It is all so heartbreaking

I love how you explained that duality in how we feel watching these scenes. Roller coaster of emotions. Claudia is the mixture of both dads though, if it wasn’t for the fact her mind ages but her body doesn’t, they really could have carried on the happy family for decades. She’s a vicious killer which Lestat liked, but was in touch with her humanity coz Louis helped her keep it. Don’t worry about other people’s preachings, there are strong feelings for these vampires. Please don’t give out spoilers so people will feel they are being forced to like a character they don’t like yet. Certain characters have been designed deliberately for this kind of moral mental struggle, whether they’ve read the books or not.

I enjoyed your commentary. I could tell Louis was stuck in the middle and didn’t want to choose between his husband and daughter. Also, do you know why Lestat bit him? The last time he bit him was in episode 1, where they were intimate, and they levitated. But I wasn't sure if it was meant to weaken him, so he has no choice but to stay and heal, or do you think he wanted force a “physical” connection? I know they haven't been intimate in 5 years, and Lestat said " I choose you" before hurting him again. Do you think Lestat would have killed Louis if he said he didn’t love him or break up with him?

Though I like Lestat as a character and find him interesting. I think it's perfectly okay to admit he was wrong here cause he was dead wrong. Love should not hurt like that. The raw truth is Lestat just domestically abused Louis. And before this big scene, he has shown signs that he is abusive before. He is a very flawed character. Something some Lestat stans will deny though it's obvious. I appreciate his complexities, but I would never excuse what Lestat did here because his feelings were hurt. It's the same in real life. Hurt feelings are not a good reason to be horribly abusive.

the whole hospital argument is moot though, cuz it was in the middle of a race riot while the whole district was burning in ep3. we see half her face covered in burns in ep4, and lou said "she's going cold." hospitals wouldn't've been able to save her; burns even in 2024 are dangerous, let alone 1917. she ranted about having a husband & raising babies--not to be shallow, but IF she survived, she'd've been a half burned/scarred; and her throat would probably be damaged from all that smoke inhalation. Marriage & children seems highly unlikely for someone who'd've been a (possibly comatose/bedridden) hospital inmate for YEARS, slowly recovering with 1917 treatments--unless she met another patient in that hospital who wouldn't judge/FEAR her for having half her face melted off. so even if claudia hadn't died that night, the fantasy of the life she wanted would've died regardless. should we THANK lou for "saving" her, and loustat deciding her fate for her by turning & raising her? probably not--vampirism is inherently evil. but she definitely needed a bit of reality check, too.

the thing about not hearing louis say he loves lestat: ok, we haven't seen lou ever say the big ILY, which makes les feel insecure. but I doubt les doesn't know if lou loves him--he'd be an idiot not realize how much lou has sacrificed just to build a home & family with this white man in segregated homophobic racist 1910-1930. That is a committed relationship--marriage--no black gay man would ever take lightly unless they loved them. so I feel like what les is ACTUALLY saying isn't that he doesn't know he's loved, but that he's not loved ENOUGH ("am i not enough?"); more than lou's humanity ("if you'd listen to me, if you finally submit to your nature, you will be filled, Louis"); more than lou's family ("i am your family, louis"); more than his career ("this is louis' hobby, not mine"); and DEFINITELY more than claudia ("an inconsequential little girl"). Les wants assurance that lou loves him MORE than all this other stuff that's been making lou miserable every time he (inevitably) loses it. but les will live forever, so why can't lou just put all that love in him; someone who'll never leave him? and i feel like that's partially VALID of lestat, cuz who wouldn't wanna be the #1 in their significant others' life? but it's also pretty SELFISH, wanting to monopolize someone so that you're the only thing they'll ever have, as if they can't have a life outside of you. hence: lestat's entitlement, and his abusiveness. so at the end of the day, sure, i can sympathize with les to a certain extent, but ep5 confirmed for me that this man treats louis like property, and that he doesn't respect anything (or anyONE) in louis' life that les feels will distract lou's attention away from lestat. which is crazy, cuz les KNEW how important family & career was to louis, all the way in ep1. "i chose you!" yeah, well you also chose ALL those other strings attached to louis, too! how dare you get mad at louis for being CONSISTENT with his OWN nature, which you arrogantly assumed would just evaporate the second you married/turned him into a vampire! and then get mad that you can't get him to act like you, when he was NEVER like you! lestat chose badly, and it's not louis' responsibility to become someone he's not, just to make les feel loved ENOUGH.

I find it frustrating watching reactions to this show where fans insist the reactor extend unearned empathy towards Lestat - to the point of victim blaming - when it's just an inability to take criticism about their favourite white man. Louis is a faulted character and can be cruel, but you've clocked Lestat's abusive behaviours since the beginning. Louis withholds his love because it's the only control he still has in a very imbalanced relationship. He can't leave because Lestat intentionally keeps him in the dark about Vampires and the extent of his powers and we see what Lestat does here at the mere suggestion.

Sometimes it can be unclear what qualifies as a spoiler. I had seen the movie from the 90s and started reading the first book years ago. But some stuff you wouldn't know simply from the source material. Like the fact that Claudia is based on a daughter who died. And knowing this definitely influences my understanding of how Lestat and Louis feel about her.
@uchennaanieke4361Ай бұрын
I have to say I am a bit surprised by your reaction to the domestic violence. Because so far you were able to pinpoint Lestat's abuse and call it out for what it was. But here, where his abuse reaches its culmination, your first words are that "you understand Lestat", the perpetrator of this horrible violence. While Louis, his victim and his spouse, is broken into pieces at the brink of death. Which resulted from Lestat attacking Claudia and Louis defending her.
@jesstellstales2113Ай бұрын
A certain vocal section of the fandom can be outspokenly critical of Frank (and reactors in general) when they feel he's not being empathetic enough to Lestat. This is unfortunate and understandably makes a lot of reactors feel less open with their criticisms of the character, even when it's valid.

Wow. I have zero sympathy for Lestat. He caught Louis in his weakest moment, turned him without explaining to him all that he would lose, such as being able to go out in the sun, presents the scenario that he wants Louis as his eternal companion, then drops it on him that he likes variety and takes Antoinette as a “side piece” that he’s been seeing for a decade. And the final straw is him flying into a rage at the suggestion of him leaving with Claudia. Lestat doesn’t want a loving relationship with Louis, he wants idol worship and indentured servitude. Lestat is spoiled, selfish, entitled, and extremely narcissistic. He can kick rocks. Needless to say, I absolutely LOVE this show and can’t wait for season 3 😂🤣😂
