Hi Helen! For what is worth, in my opinion, both sketches are brilliant. Their abstraction and their respective “Fauve” color scheme makes them filled with energy and interest. Both are a success! Fun video, thank you! ❤

I really appreciate this. Oil & wax based mediums are the most perplexing for me. Fascinating to see others work with them. 😊

Really enjoyed the paintings you did, they really remind me of Gauguin's work. Colors are different from what he chose but the blocks of color, the shaping of them, really feels similar. Love your art!

I wasn’t sure if the sketches were finished at first but as soon as you took the washi tape off it suddenly all made sense! I particularly love the first sketch, the colours work really well together. It’s got more of an impressionistic feel to it, which I love in landscapes.

I didn't think they'd be finished either, but the removal of washi tape definitely helped! Thanks ever so much!

Hi Helen! This was so much fun to watch. I loved seeing how you used the sketches from your class to create your paintings. I always think my Plein air sketches need to be like photographs and contain so much information instead of just going with the basic shapes and using them to inform a future painting (I’m making a note to myself to do this). I think I may try the KingArt sticks as I think I would enjoy the blendability of them. I love how you went in with your alternative colors and had fun playing around. You are always so inspiring to watch. Thank you 😊 Terri

Thanks so much! I would never have done such simple sketches if I'd not been told to as part of a class, but I really see the value of them now. I need to do more of the scenery around here. Yes - the Kingart sticks are really enjoyable for blending.

I really enjoyed watching you experiment and play today. The alternative colors worked so well! Interesting wipe off with the baby wipes! Thanks for sharing your art world today. I especially loved the second result. I sadly cannot find the gelatos translucent color set or any of the individual colors in it. They look so lovely. I’ll have to be content with what I can find! ❤

Thanks!! I didn't like what I'd done so the baby wipes came in useful and I actually liked the marks it left! I'm currently exploring an alternative to the Translucent Gelotos, so stay tuned!

I really like the colors and movement in these today. Just so I know I understand this, the gelatos and kingsart sticks are better in the under layers with the tempura paint sticks as the top layer because of the thickness of the tempura paints? Do the neocolors also work better under the tempura paints? When you scratched into the layers today it reminded me of some art we did at primary school, where you lay down a colorful pattern and then cover it over with black crayon. Then you scratch a new picture into the black layer to reveal the colors underneath. I can't remember what that technique was called but it's giving me some ideas now. I just googled the worlds longest question and it's called "scratch art" 😂 I had to know
@helencryer4 ай бұрын
Re. the layering, you definitely could layer the Gelatos and KingArt sticks over Temperas, but it made sense to me to cover larger areas first with the KingArt and Gelatos because they're kind of more slippery and looser (less dense) and easier to spread and blend out. They're also a bit more transparent, so would be less effective at using in a top layer. The Neocolors are fine either way, except they don't stick too well (being harder) over very soft, thick areas of Gelatos or KingArt sticks. I remember scratch art!

Helen….loved both of these !! 🤩 Using non realistic colours makes the artwork so interesting and unique. I have never used charcoal although have often wondered about it….mainly not wanting to because I thought it would smudge and be messy….. but seeing it in pencil form here made me think again about trying it. May I ask you your opinion about why you would use the charcoal pencil instead of a usual graphite pencil …or was it just for a change on this occasion ? Thank you as always 💕💕
@helencryer4 ай бұрын
Thank you!! Sometimes I just really love using the charcoal pencils in spite of their smudginess, because they lay down so beautifully, but it's more about how they make me feel - like I'm being more loose and less perfectionisty and more free and 'arty'!

Thank you for your video. Did the gels dry? Do you need a fixative? Cheers😊
@helencryer4 ай бұрын
The Gelatos and KingArt sticks dry a bit, but not totally, so they transfer a bit. The Tempera Sticks don't transfer at all. I won't use a fixative - I might just put a sheet of deli paper in between pages.
