Abu Ambassadeur 7000 fishing reel take apart and service

This video shows you how to take apart and service an Abu Ambassadeur 7000 round bait casting reel. It is a step by step process that shows you how it works including the internal gearing, and how to lubricate the reel.

About 20 years ago I pulled my reel apart and didn’t put it back together properly, when line was pulled the handle turned backwards. Now, after following your instructions I have fixed the problem....how I don’t know. Must have had something back to front or not engaging properly. Anyway, thank you very much.

Haha. Problem fixed. You beauty. The brass bush that holds the end of the spool had jammed and was away from the casing by about 3mm. That was allowing the spool to move to far to the drive side of the reel. Must have happened some how, the last time I took the caps off to oil the reel. But again thanks for the video. Gave me the confidence to pull the reel apart.

Cool, this all applies to my 7000B that I'm considering tinkering with (bearings and drag). It's a good reel "as is" but the pretty green machine stays home more than the C3's for it's basic nature. I've hot-rodded everything but a fishing reel and a 20 year old reel should be getting more action! Bearings and carbon drag washers should be a good investment on a nearly new (old) reel. Great original spares to toss back in the box if needed down the line...

Is it possible to replace a thumb screw? One of them has snapped on my real on the spool side of the real. It still works perfectly well but would be nice to fix it if possible.

You can make one from a stirring straw or the tube that comes with spray cans like WD40 if you can't find one. They will be hard to find, but you can check southwestern parts.com or eBay - Dennis

I have just received an abu Garcia ambassadeur 7001 - unfortunately (for me) it is a left hand reel. Is it possible to convert it to a right hand reel? It would be a nice addition to my other equipment that I presently use here in the Pacific Northwest. A little light for halibut fishing - but still a lot of fun for sure. You cannot convert these Ambassadeur reels. You need to find the 7000 if you want the right hand retrieve. Generally, the odd numbered mode numbers indicate the left hand crank. Thanks for asking - Dennis

As mentioned I had a clacking sound when casting if the spool was tentioned. Pulled the reel down and to my surprise after 30 years of use it was immaculate inside. No sign of wear. No dried up grease. No teeth missing from gears or any loose objects floating around inside. No sand or grit. And nicely lubricated. After reassembling, I have noticed that the spool seems to be a little too far to the drive side of the reel . If I loosen the tention on the spool and tilt it to one side it grates when tilted with the drive side down but runs free and when tilted the other way. Perhaps I need to some how shim the end of the spool shaft so it remains central when it is tentioned? Any suggestions? Note that the original brass plates and felt lubricating pads are still inside the tentioning caps.

Which tensioner are you using? There is an adjuster on each side of the reel, right? There should be one behind the handle and one on the non gear side right? These need to be balanced to eliminate slop and have the spool operate efficiently. Try playing with these first for see if that helps. If you have no luck, it may be an out of round spool, but I wouldn't replace that yet. - Dennis

I have the one under the handle done up tight and I use the one on the other side to adjust the tention on the spool. It seems to be all ok now. As I mentioned the bush on the right side had jammed and was too far away from the housing. Causing the spool to be to move to the right and the clacking sound when casting was the small gear hit on the large one. Has caused some minor damage to the small gear. But is still operating ok. I like oil. Grease tends to pick up and hold the contaminants including micro sand particles. - I will go get my oil now and add a drop :). This reel was done to show the inner workings for a viewer. It didn't need the maintenance. Thanks for watching and noticing - Dennis

I have three ABU Ambassadeur 7000 C4 Lever Drag reels. Have had these since new in the early 2000s . These just have sat with minimal use in my garage rod reel rack in the ceiling. Now its 2021 and want to take these apart and clean all the parts , relube , reassemble. Do you have any history with these reels. I really can't find much about them. Good bad or ugly.

You don't see these around much. The last one I serviced was a few years back. I can't recall anything bad or ugly. It was pretty straightforward. My friend has the 7000c. When you turn the clicker off and go to cast it clicks like the clicker is on. We can’t figure out how to stop it from doing that. Any ideas?

I think you need to take the side plate off and inspect. It is possible that there is a spring disconnected, which could leave the clicker always on. - Dennis

It depends on how long the boxes sit in hot warehouses or containers on ships. That oil and lube does evaporate and heat will cause it to dry sooner. If you get one fresh from the factory, it should never be a problem - Dennis

If that is what you class as a service then I beg to differ. None of the reel parts got degreased and cleaned properly at all. At the bottom of the gear stack you should have a copper shim this was missing and you never even mentioned it. One of the most important parts of the service is the level wind and checking of the Pawl for wear, not even looked at. No mention of what way up the bevelled washers should go. Not enough time and detail given to the peoples who look at these educational videos.

Thank you for your feedback Mark. I will try to incorporate some of these ideas into future videos. I try to do what I can in under 20 minutes to keep the video "watchable"and pass along as much information as I can in that time. I don't edit and don't script these, so oversights and omissions occur. I usually catch these before posting and certainly before I return a reel to the customer, (like the shim washer that you mentioned) but I don't change the video. I don't pretend to be the know all expert. Just a guy trying to help folks by sharing knowledge while I still can - Dennis

Thanks for the reply and please keep up the good work of educating people. I was being picky but some of the little things do make a big difference. look forward to seeing more from you. Big Abu fan myself but still have to ring Peter Coogan to ask the way bevel washers go etc. Only last week I found out the bottom one in the stack is in fact thinner than the top two. When I checked my 7000c Syncros not one of them was correct. all sorted now though.
