I bought my Sliver Max 13 years ago. I have several reels ranging in prices. The Sliver Max may not be my favorite but I still like it and think it's a good reel for the price. Last year I started having issues with the Sliver Max and decided to replace it. For some reason I couldn't/ didn't throw the Sliver Max away. Today I came across it and thought I would look on KZbin for a video on the reel to see if it could be fixed. Came across this video 1st and in no time my Sliver Max was working as good as new. Thank you for the video and giving life back to an old reel.

Dennis, your videos were very helpful. I was able to fix two older Abu Garcia Silver Max Reels that were jamming up. I was originally told they were both junk! Anyway, I noticed you did not disassemble the thumb button for casting. One of my reels the button does not come back up unless I lift it with my thumb. I tends to get stuck in the down position unless I physically lift it each time so I can reel in. Can you tell me how to resolve? Not sure if I should take it all apart again.
@2ndChanceTackle Жыл бұрын
Yes - the thumb button not coming up is a result of the internal trip not firing or the side plate b=not being set properly and jamming the button. You need to recheck both.

Thanks Dennis for a fantastic video! I have 2 of the newer versions of the Silver Max reels and both have a left hand retrieve. So as you suggested, I took lots of photos as I took one apart -- figuring if I messed up, I could then take the second one apart to see where parts go! Your video was very helpful and precise and got both of my reels back up and working nice and smooth. I had issues with it not locking and would spin backwards. But after a thorough cleaning/oiling/greasing, they seem to be just like new. You have a very comforting way of talking on your video which really made it much easier to follow. Finally, I really do appreciate you thanking first responders. It's been a tough 2 years out there...Take care, happy fishing and be safe!

I neither have one nor have the desire to buy one but I do enjoy understanding the technology of this reel in the slight chance I might have to work on one sometime. One of the character traits that you have in abundance is a high ethical standard in the way you communicate and how you work with your customers. You’ve helped me get two reels I wanted pretty badly in addition to servicing one of my Penn reels. I would not hesitate to trust you with my most valuable reels because of the way you work with your customers and share these videos every day. I know I join a lot of subscribers in saying thanks. This particular reel would make me nervous mostly because it is so small. I have very poor vision due to retinal problems so a reel like this is a bit frightening. I’d still work on one though if only to conquer my fears. I worked on two reels today - a beautiful little Daiwa 1000C that I serviced and added a bearing and a big Mitchell 386 that I serviced. I bought the Mitchell as a parts reel but it works so well I’m going to keep it in reserve. I was unable to get the pinion and bearing loose but the bearing was working well so I just worked around it. I’ve done so many Mitchells now that I can do them in my sleep. As big as these saltwater Mitchells are they are the simplest of reels. The 302, 306, and others with that planamatic oscillation system are much more complicated. 2 1/2 years ago I knew very little about fishing reels and was intimidated at the thought of servicing the two reels I owned. Then I saw one of your videos and in the short time since I’ve accumulated 175 vintage spinning reels in a collection that I started. This was due at least partially to you and your videos. I try not to let my wife hold it against either of us but I’m afraid I’ve failed. Lol! She thinks I, at least, am absolutely insane.

I've got a couple of low profile ABU's but I have a boatload of vintage Ambassadeur's that I Bass fish with. You just cant beat the sound of a bushing type ABU screaming out line along with the durability and confidence knowing I can beat the brakes off that reel and it will still perform like a charm. I have about twenty of them A,B,C and D series and each one is ready for battle. I only have a couple that I showcase like my Penns but mainly I'm slinging worms with them lol. Thanks Dennis as always!

Dennis, love the channel and it's help me immensely with keeping my reels in great shape. One question about the flipper switch. I have a Max DLC LC, and the flipper switch popped off when I opened the case. It looks the same as the Silver Max 2 in your video, but is there a method on how to put the spring back into the flipper switch. The spring is still there, but I'm not sure if it sits on a post or whether it just needs to be compressed and the switch laid on top back into it's groove. Thanks for any response.
@2ndChanceTackle Жыл бұрын
I can't recall exactly. I think one side of the spin goes in a pin hole on a post in the case. The other side attaches to the switch and you compress it to load it - Not sure though. If you send a picture of the parts and spring to my email 2ndchancetackle@gmail.com I will try to be more specific - Thanks Dennis

Really enjoy and appreciate your videos. I have a silver max 2 LH that I’ve taken apart and put back together several times. However the thumb bar will go down but doesn’t seem to want to come back on its own. It appears to me part #20 may have the tip broke off where it’s supposed to contact the metal part #32. So I think I need to replace part #20. Also have two little black pin like things approx 3/16” that appear to be parts #73 but I can’t for the life of me figure out where they go. Any ideas? Thank you.
@2ndChanceTackle Жыл бұрын
It is possible that the trip stud is worn - part 20, but unlikely. My guess is that you do not have part 32 flat and square on the gear post. That part has 2 flat sides that grip the post. It my lie flat on the bottom of the post. If it does not, the click ratchet will ride high and the stud will not engage. If that is seated properly, then you may need to replace them. Parts 73 look like the pins that old the magnet assembly to the dial.

Thanks for the video. I was just given 2 of these Abu Garcia reels to practice servicing. The two reels have slightly different bridges. One has a metal plate that the yoke gear sits on (like the one in this video) while the other is entirely plastic. The one with the metal plate has a noticeably different sound when reeling. Is that metal plate enough to make an audible difference in the reels?
@2ndChanceTackle3 жыл бұрын
I haven't seen the one with the plastic plate, so it is hard to say. There are a lot of moving parts in these reels and each one can be a noise maker. All reels have quirks. It could be the gears, the line guide, bearings, etc. If they are mechanically sound, just go with it! Dennis

Keep that braid! Dynema braid just doesn't lose strength even after years constantly in salt water.

Thanks for the tip! I have it on a pole and am waiting for the weather to clear. I'll give it a go. BTW - how can you tell it is the Dynema braid? Thanks Ward - Dennis
