This content is so timely. I’m taking “accutane” (amnesteen) for sebaceous hyperplasia. I am over 40. I took one month at 10mg a day and am now (on month 2)doing 10mg every other day with a possibility of lowering that dosage to maybe just 3x per week. My derm and I are experimenting with the dosage to see how low I can go and still have results. The “results” i have are excellent. First off, after 2 weeks I noticed the decrease in oil and appearance of pores. My skin in general looks beautiful. No new sebaceous hyperplasia spots. I had all of them removed by electrocautery a month before I started “accutane”. None have returned. No scars. Btw, I did not have acne. However, the occasional pimple or bumps from sweat or oil have completely disappeared. My scalp is no longer oily and my hair looks better, Fuller , my blow out lasts for days. I definitely have photo-aging from my younger years but have been taking good care of my skin and protecting it from sun for many years now. But now, My skin looks smoother. I can’t tell if it’s because my pores are tighter or if perhaps my skin is more bouncy. I can use less make up and my skin looks more even (maybe because the oil did weird things to my make up pre accutane). Although, I wasn’t overly oily. Just moderately oily skin. Yes, I still have to get a preg test. Yes I did do blood work and will again after 2 months to check my Lipids. I still have to answer the questions in IPledge. Lastly, the only side effects I have had are very dry eyes. After I went to every other day dose , that got much better. I wear contacts. I also think I might be bruising more easily , but I’m not sure. That’s hard to know. Sorry for long response. I just wanted help anyone who is interested in the off label use of “accutane “ So far, I love it. It’s absolutely acting like an anti aging or actually , an age reversing option. I look better. No oil, bouncy skin, no sebaceous hyperplasia, better hair , and , smaller pores, and more even complexion. I’ll keep tweaking the dosage and using it unless I develop a problem with my liver enzymes or have unmanageable side effects. Hope that helps someone. I was always told that accutane dries skin out therefore making it prone to aging faster than oily skin.
@Marasma1013 жыл бұрын
This is exactly what accutane is meant to do. It 'kills' your sebaceous glands so they don't produce natural oils. So even post treatment, you're left with chronically dry skin that you must slather moisturizer to keep feeling normal.

I've been off accutane for prob around 20 years. At first it seems like a miracle, but I can promise the skins thins and wrinkles easier down the road and joints become very fragile and arthritis can occur, when the body lubricating process is impeded upon, those things happen. Won't happen right away, but down the road. Hence, all the fear mongering, people who are only a few years out from it love it because the side effects won't shot up overnight. I loved it at first and said I'd do it again if I had to until I started realizing this and researching it. Best thing you can do is research every medicine the physician tells you to go on.

I’ve been on a low dose of accutane for years. I take 10mg 2-3 times a week. I was prescribed it for acne and the low dose keeps my breakouts at bay. We don’t have as rigorous of a process in Canada so my dr prescribes it as long as my blood tests are good. I have never got bad side effects from it and my blood tests are always good. Also it is fully covered for me so it’s just super easy and accessible for me. My acne is mild but stubborn and it seams when I stop taking the accutane the breakouts begin again. I’m planning on starting tretinoin to see if that will have a longer lasting result for my acne. I’m 29 and it appears to have helped with anti aging as I don’t have any wrinkles.

I had pretty severe hormonal acne and went to see my derm late in life at 40. He kept me on a low dose after the treatment was over because I tolerated the medication so well and was religious about moisturising and sunscreen. The only thing I don't like is the increased scaring and not being able to get surgery. But I went off for a month and I broke out. I always thought it was a shame that happened because I would have liked to have gotten off and started on topical for wrinkle prevention so I am pleased the accutane does similar.

A couple years late here, but I take isotretinoin 10 mg daily (possibly switching to every other day at my next apt.) for acne and general chemoprevention. I used to be on topicals but felt this treated acne across my body a little better since I am pretty active. Not sure if this is normal, but my provider said I also won’t have to do monthly monitoring anymore if I switch from daily to every other day since my labs have been consistent for a while, which I’m looking forward to. I highly recommend oral if you don’t want to have to worry about applying creams all over your body at night and you’re pretty active/have stubborn acne. Less worry on my part overall.
