Seriously, I don't get why marks are only on one side now. Even on the old g1 dolls, as far as I can tell they always had cutie marks on both flanks. Also, the marks on g5 ponies seem way too small, half the time you barely notice them.

When the Director of the movie(A New Generation) got interviewed, he stated that the reason cutie marks are on one side is because they looked odd and weird on both sides in 3D for them, and to me that makes no sense. If anything they look weirder on one side to me, if fans can make 3D models for G4 characters using SFM with cutie marks looking fine on both sides then I don't see why official teams can't.

The Mane 6 cutie mark stories in G4 were complex and well developed. So much so that it took and entire episode to get through them all. I also LOVED the fact that Rainbow Dash's sonic rainboom was the reason she and her friends got their marks to begin with. It was a genius way to tie the group together even before they all met. But as for G5, not only do their cutie mark stories NOT tie the characters together in any way at all, they're also so rushed and don't make any sense. It's kind of sad, really.

Let me try rewriting how they got their cutie marks. .Sunny:One day in Maretime Bay she wonders what life would be like if everypony had unity again. Just the other day she saw earth ponies trashing a picture of pegasi and unicorns. Argyle tells her a story about how in the past friendship among the races didn't exist. He tells the stories of Twilight and how she managed to bring the world together in the end. Sunny being optimistic declares that one day she will prove that unity among the three races can exist once again. Cutie mark appears. .Hitch:One day on a camping trip with his team they end up lost in the woods. Everyone is scared but Hitch has to be brave and strong and is determined to help everypony find their way out. He uses his way of talking with the land critters which is how he met his deputies. Eventually they make it out of the forest and his mark appears. .Izzy:One day the unicorns decide to have a creativity contest to try and boost their sprites, but because unity didn't exist hardly anyone was interested. Izzy soon found a way to create something new out of the useless things the other unicorns decided not to use. She ended up making something so creative her cutie mark appeared. .Zipp:She heard tales of the wonderbolts and how cool it would be to fly like them one day so she decides to build her own training yard and after days and days of hard work she ended up surprising every Pegasi with her cool gymnastics and that's when her cutie mark appears. .Pipp:It's an annual celebration in Zephyr Heights and Pipp wanted to be as great as the other Pegasi singing celebrities. When it was her time to sing she got stage fright as it was her first time in front of a crowd. She loved singing in private but never in public. Then she remembers her mom telling her of old legends like Coloratura and Songbird Serenade and that gave her the courage to sing her first song in public which was so magical her cutie mark appeared.

As far as Hitch's cutie mark story goes, I think it would've been better if there was somepony in a life threatening situation, and Hitch saved them, and then got his cutie mark. It would've shown the protection, boldness, and toughness you mentioned, as well as keeping the kindness of the hearts. (On another note of his cutie mark backstory though, WHY DID HE MAKE SPROUT HIS DEPUTY? He has never shown himself to be particularly kind or anything really but a cowardly jerk, and that's who Hitch chose to be his deputy? Seriously?)

I always believed that Hitch made Sprout deputy out of guilt. It was stated in the movie that Sprout wanted to be a deputy since he was a kid, so I think Hitch gave him the second best thing out of guilt that he took away his best friend's dream, or as a way to keep the job from ruining their friendship (The dramatic irony being that the job still seemed to worsen their relationship anyway, between Sprout growing jealous of Hitch and Hitch growing more judgmental and less patient with him because Sprout was so lazy and cowardly with his job.)

I'm not in any way defending Sprout, but watching the movie and looking with attention at the interactions those two had, Hitch wasn't a saint neither. And I really liked that because as the fellow in the replies said they had SO MUCH POTENTIAL to grow as characters. But things went downhill after the movie (Sprout absence, Hitch barely interacting with his CHILDHOOD friend...)

I actually liked Zipp's cutie mark story as it seemed to play in that innate desire she has of 'figuring things out', which was directly stated in Chapter 1 and which makes sense for her character (It's only natural that someone who has been stuck in a life that doesn't fit her would have an innate desire for figuring both herself and the mysteries around her out.) And it felt like a rare moment in Make Your Mark since the early chapters where a reference to A New Generation actually MEANT something and played into the storytelling, as opposed to the reference just being shown off like a piece of expensive jewelry, having no innate value outside of being able to show it off. I think the only problem with it is that the design of the cutie mark itself doesn't necessarily play into the backstory, or much of Zipp's character. And I think it's because I believe that the writers in A New Generation were setting her destiny up to be more related to flight, with the passion Zipp had for it in the movie and that one shot where she longingly looked at a Wonderbolts poster. Which Make Your Mark ignored in favor of making Zipp a detective.

4:47 i would like to argue the point of Zipp's cutiemark Rainbow Dash has a cloud with a rainbow lightning bolt for her cutiemark. She got it by doing a sonic rainboom as a child. It took great speed and agility to do that, so the lightning bolt could represent the speed and ability Zipp did during her parkour But they also are meant to represent who they are as a pony, not just their special trait. Izzy is creative and recyclable, which shows. Hitch is a very protective person, wanting to keep everyone safe physically and mentally. Zipp wants to help people out practically about hard issues that can happen in a flash. Pipp is someone who enjoys being in the limelight especially when it boosts people's moods, like music does. And Sunny is plot armour because shes the 'princess to bring harmony back to ponies'

So I'm working on re-writing Hitch's, Pipp's, and Sunny's stories so I will be posting them here. I will take any advice. For now, I will paste what I have for Hitch I was playing hoofball with some colts on the beach when this filly asked to join us and they wouldn't let her play, they just kept shouting "No fillies allowed". She was so upset that she started to cry. I was always taught to be kind to others because you never know just what some pony is going through. So I did what any decent pony would do. Puffing out my chest I looked the colts right in the eyes "Hey! That wasn't very nice, she just wanted to play with us, how would you feel if someone left you out of a game? Now you go apologise to her and let her join our game." I was not surprised that they ignored her. Oh well, their loss. I decided to go play with her instead. "who needs bullies" And that's when I got my cutie mark

First: Love the editing style. Good on you for keeping the classic style of brony analysis alive. Second: I agree that these CM origins were largely disappointing. I wasn't expecting some deep lore implications, but I was expecting some basic thought put into the symbolism and character personalities. Hitch's story, for example, would've instantly been elevated if he *defended* the filly from the rude remarks instead of just running off with her. Because his cutie mark is a shield. I'm not sure how something so simple could be that hard to miss.

Then, after I've took out the things from the bins, I've started creating more! = bins but in a different spot this time. Then, one day, when I was creating things out of from the junk, in a sudden, BAM! I got my cutie mark! It felt woozy but funny! So, after then, I never knew I would say something like this.. Buttt! It was unicycling!" - HITCH • "Alright, alright. When I was a colt. I was wandering around Maretime Bay. Later then, I suddenly heard a few ponies that were yelling: more like they were fighting. When I came to the spot where the sound was coming from, I found Sprout and his.. minion was bullying a filly! And that soon I realized that there were some fillies and colts were watching the scene, but none of them were helping. I felt a somewhat feeling of disappointment. So, I didn't wait any longer. I decided to take action and tried to teach Sprout a lesson: to not bully anypony;it would affect their entire life after that! But, as soon as I was trying to make Sprout understand how it is important. But, Sprout didn't care, so the both of them went away. But, I knew that after that. I would repeat my lesson to him once again. But I had to help the filly. So, I helped her bloom once again. And then, there! I got my cutie mark." - ZIPP • "Sure, I guess. When I was a filly, our mom ended up inviting every pegasus in a somewhat social gathering. And yes, I had nothing to do except listen to our mom's conversation with the others. But then, one of the workers who were cleaning the chandeliers screamed, and I saw that he had lost balance. So, without hesitation, I quickly went over to him and held onto the ladder as firmly to stop it from wobbling. When it stopped, luckily, he gained his composure and thanked me. When he went down, he actually got cut by the sharpness from the chandelier, and it was caused by the wobble on the ladder. So, since I had no other choice, I ripped out a bit of a piece of fabric from my dress and tied it around his wound without hesitating to stop the bleeding. And then, at a sudden, I got my cutie mark afterward! And now, every now and then, I started to show more singing, and I got motivated by the immense support for me. So, after a day or two, when I was singing on live. I suddenly got my cutie mark!" - SUNNY • "Okay, hear me out. When I was a filly. Me and my dad were wandering around the streets of Maretime Bay. I saw a few construction workers and an owner who seemed that they were struggling on something, most especially to the owner! So, after I saw that. Me and dad went towards them and asked what was wrong. The construction workers were silent, but the owner told me what she was struggling with. It turns out that she wanted to build a business where she'll offer jobs to the ones that are currently struggling to find a job right now, but.. She didn't have much money to pay it to build it. So, she was disappointed. Then, after hearing that. I was saddened about her story. My dad told me that if some pony was struggling with something, I should help them at all cost. So, after a day, I made a smoothie stand to sell smoothies to everypony for only 10$, not that much. And so, ponies started to buy my smoothies every hour or so. And that day, I gained 70$ dollars. So, when tomorrow came in. I started again to sell smoothies. Surprisingly, a lot of ponies started to buy from my stand since they said that my smoothies were delicious! And it sure catched the others' attention. So, after that day, I gained 150$! Then, a day and a day, then after a week of selling and buying fruits to make more smoothies, which kind of decreased. But, luckily, I've collected the perfect amount of money where the mare wanted to build a building;for a business: and to help others get jobs too! So, I left the house with the money, and I gave permission to my dad to go outside. But the problem is, I didn't know where the mare was. So, after some hours. I kept running around to try and find her. But when I saw her walking down on the roadside with a gloomy face. I quickly went up to her and explained what I did for the past week. She was surprised, and she thought that I was joking. But after I gave it to her, she started to cry, and thanked me for it! So, after a week. When my dad and I went outside to walk. I noticed that a building was built in good shape, and a lot of ponies were signing up! I felt happy about it. And suddenly, I got my cutie mark!" Gonna defend G5 here... kinda sorta.. Zipp's cutie mark makes sense, it's a lightning bolt just like Rainbow Dash's. It represents speed and I can see how a filly learning how to fly might do something like Zipp. The crowd might have thought she was really flying or something, idk. As for just singing a few random notes, I feel like we saw ponies get their cutie marks for less in G4. Can't say much about the rest of them as yeah Hitch and Sunny especially don't make sense.

I think Izzy's, Zipps and Pipps were fine, the sisters ones were just presented very poorly in terms of visuals. Like Zipp doing/learning parkcour tricks while figuring out a way for Pegasi to fly makes sense with the lightning bolt, and the idea that Pipp was really shy before, but was a good singer and got the courage to perform earning her CM. BOTH would've been cool if they fleshed it out a lot more. And the unfortunate reality is, Sunnys and especially Hitchs Cutie marks only makes sense with their characters from the movie. Because Hitch was actually a strong, brave and trusted force that the Earth Ponies relied on and loved due to his kindness. His CM with the shield reflects the fact that he's a protector and relates way more to him being a sheriff than "oh I played with a girl this one time". Sunnys whole character and purpose is such a mess it's not worth touching.

Fixing the cutie mark stories! First up, Hitch. I wanna start out with the same way the original version started, with Hitch playing with a couple of colts when a filly came up wanting to join. Hitch agrees, but the colts just brush him off and tell the filly to get lost. She tries to stand up for herself, but the colts are relentless in their teasing. The filly is about to run away crying, when Hitch jumps in front of her, and confronts the colts. Telling them to buzz off, and then snatching the ball away from. Watching as the colts flee with their tails between their legs. Afterwards, Hitch and the filly play for a few minutes, until the filly stops in the middle of the game. Pointing out Hitch's new cutie mark.

Second, Izzy. Bridlewood is hosting a talent show for all the fillies, and Izzy wants to join. The only problem being she has no idea what to perform. But being the innocent and slightly naive girl she is, Izzy signs up anyway. Spending the next few days brainstorming for what kind of talent she can show off. It's not until Izzy notices some broken knickknacks in the trash that she gets an idea. She digs them out, cleans them, and starts getting to work. On the day of the talent show, Izzy shows off her miniature statue, and the judges are impressed. They're a little grossed out that it came from items she dug out of the trash, but Izzy promised she cleaned them before doing anything else. And as Izzy walks off the stage with her creation, her cutie mark appears.

Zipp Zipp has always been interested in learning how to fly, wishing she could fly for real, instead of being forced to lie to everypony. So, she starts to come up with ideas on how to keep herself in the air. One day, Zipp is lying in her room in front of a small fan. When she gets an idea. Zipp knocks the fan over, turning the power all the way up, and then stands over it. Spreading her wings, as she feels the artificial wind underneath her. It's not enough, but Zipp can feel just the slightest lift. Excited by her new discovery, Zipp turns her fan off, and starts to make plans on how to create a stronger fan to lift her up. She creates several different prototypes, eventually landing on a smaller version of the one from inside the movie, but with a few small dips in quality. Zipp tries out the fan, and it works! She is ecstatic by her success, and spends the next half hour 'flying' above her homemade fan. And when Zipp eventually does have to get off, she glances down, and notices her brand new cutie mark!

Yeah, these origins not only made no sense but it also was downright disappointing. Misty made the most sense. Zipp somewhat makes sense but it’s not properly explained. Pipp was… just there. Sunnies made no Sense at all morally. In still don’t understand why they made Sunny a shake seller instead of a historian or something. And Hitch… Was just downright disappointing, it keeps on making me question how he is or even became Sheriff of the law

C'mon man. It's been like a thousand years since Twilight's rule. Spike and the ponies even said it was ancient Equestria. As time goes by, things change. Sure the Cutie Mark Blossom Bash is not like the Cutie Mark Cute-ceanera, but hey, that is not Ponyvile nor the old Equestria. It's a new tradition. I agree the backstory of how the mane 5 got their cutie marks is dispointing and makes no sense especially the origins of Hitch and Sunny and Misty's cutie marks? I think Sunnny's makes the least sense! What does Sunnnys cutie mark have to do with making lemonade i thought it had something to do with astronomy and i thought sunnys special talent is learning about equestrias history, Hitch has the cutie mark of a sheriff but he gets basically letting this mare comepete in this game wait so not thought only are the earth ponies portrayed as being racist but they are also sexist? The writers of this show really hate earth ponies they are always portrated as bad they never portray the pegasi and unicorns this evil! And why Sprout is being portrated as a bully Sprout is racist but he was never sexist in the movie so out of character!!! And how is that girl? Doesnt look like Sunny Starscout I never seen her or that other pony Sprout is with the writers just decided to add made up ponies in Hitch's story! Zipp and Pips cutie mark sense ZIpp earned hers for flying like Rainbow Dash is a lightning bolt and Pipp earned hers for singing and its a music note! But how can ZIpp fly? there was no magic before? As for Misty's cutie mark I have no idea why its a butterfly i see some reviewers saying its because of her transformation from good to evil but I thought it had something to do with animals like Flutershys cutie mark! I love G5 but the lore really is weird and confusing!

I had an idea for a plot part in my MLP Genenertions movie story concept, where the main villain, Mara Dreamdancer, aka the Queen of Nightmares, invades the Pony World & Equestria, which being a nearly unstoppable villain, much more powerful than any other villain faced before (seeing the other villains as amateurs and as puppets she controls), she easily conquered, having escaped her nightmare dimension prison, she was sealed away in long, long long ago (about 4-5000 years ago)... Anyway, a team of Ponies, one from each generation (the Pony Paragons of Hope), revives the one Ponystrong enough to defeat and stop Mara and at the climax of the film, we finally end up at the secret location where all Cutie Marks come from, the legendary Cutie Mark Factory... where the final battle takes place as Mara plans to take full control over all the Pony's Cutie Marks and all light itself, so she can plunge the Pony World into a world of eternal nightmare...

I think the only thing that bothered me about that episode was the fact that Queen Haven had her new purple gem crown when she should’ve had the Pegasus crystal in her crown. Like did they forget that? It’s inconsistent even in the comics and TYT!

Fearing G5 will break him too. The finale of this season already exasperated two reviewers so much they may quit making MLP content...G5 is really killing the spark for a lot of folks... Please, Hasbro, put more effort in making this show, you are just gonna lose money and support if you don't!

I think for this generation it's up for the ponys interpretation of what their mark means to them not a literal definition of what it means, at least that's what I interpret from the episode especially given how the kids Express theirs and how non-descript they are. Also another point in G4 there were also other ponys that couldn't properly understand or determine what their mark ment(ex. Troubleshoos and diamond teara) so I think this episode is kind of an extension on that not a literal definition of what there marks actually mean. Just my thoughts though😊

I couldn’t stand pipp here 😭 (given I can never stand her) like she’s such a show off and her singing is so annoying. It should have been later on that she realized that she could preform. Like ask her mom to put on a show

Nahhh sweetie still has her talent in singing (the music note in her mark), the mark also shows when a pony finds not just their talent/what they're good at, but what is tied to what gives them purpose Also is sooo fitting they'd get it together

Out of all of them Pip seems the most realistic. But I think the way the scene is set up makes it feel super lackluster. Like, if they had put more effort into it could've been great. But, she just kinda sang some random lines about cutie marks and it's just tacked on at the end of Zip's story. Even just her being so inspired she decided to write a song and then sing it to her sister, rather than just walking up suddenly and singing, and then getting her cutie mark when she realized how happy it made her sister and how much she loves to perform and bring joy to people. The concept itself, pip finding the confidence to perform after seeing her sister doing what she wanted and being good at it and then getting her cutie mark. That's fine. The way it's actually executed was so disappointing though. Why even show us if they weren't going to effort into it, ya know? And I don't think the other cutie mark stories even really matched the characters. It almost feels like when the characters were originally made the ideas behind their characters and cutie marks was different than what was decided in the show. Especially for Sunny. In the movie it really felt like her special talent was hope and wonder. She had faith and hope that if she just worked hard enough for it she unite everyone again. And through that she managed to share that hope with everyone around her. But instead it's just, conflict resolution I guess? Which doesn't actually match her cutie mark.

@@glitterbug5678 I think they did Izzy the best. I think it made sense for a big sister to inspire the little one. But they could have put more effort into Pipp's origin. Though, that is in keeping with the movie character's supporting role. 🤔

So, I honestly think you're being too surface here. Sunny got her mark for conflict resolution. She proved herself able to keep a cool head in a crisis and find a way forward for everyone (like a shooting star) Hitch came to the defense of a pony that was being picked on and excluded for something she couldn't control (being a girl) and thus: shield. Zipp used her ingenuity and speed to try and show pegasi a way they could "fly" without magic even if that's just gliding. She used a combination of two of the things you listed hence: lightning bolt. Pipp saw the other ponies all paying attention to Zipp's performance and (lets call a spade a spade she was jealous of the attention) decided she wanted attention like that too, so she started singing so that she'd get attention as well. Showboating is a big part of being a pop star, are you seriously going to tell me it's not? And Izzy, well you already said her story matches her mark very well. She uses creativity for the benefit of all. I understand you prefer g4 and that's fine but lets not just look at the surface of things?

Make Your Mark series is the epitome of apathy and laziness. Tell Your Tale, the series that was supposed to serve as in between the "main series" and is only 5 minutes long, put in more effort.

I agree that the cutie mark stories really don't feel memorable, and are breezed right by way too quickly, but I think you're being way too cynical for most of them. You're looking for a much bigger picture, when, oftentimes, as is shown in their cutie mark origins, there doesn't always have to BE one. Each of the Mane 5 shown here DID do something meaningful that changed their lives and those around them, and THAT'S why they earned their cutie marks. Granted, not all of the cutie marks themselves make sense in terms of how they look (mostly talking about Hitch's here), but I genuinely felt like the way they earned them made perfect sense. I won't touch on Izzy because you were spot on and there's not much more to add, and you're absolutely right: Hitch's cutie mark story is underwhelming and makes no sense. Any arguments I could make for it are ones you already made in the video, so moving onto Zipp and Pipp: Ignoring the fact that, yeah, Pegasi would've believed that Royalty could still fly, this is a LIFE CHANGING moment for Zipp. She uses her analytical mind to devise a way to utilize parkour to create her OWN version of "flying". She wasn't able to achieve true flight, but she got the closest thing she was able to accomplish, and thus earned her cutie mark. Her perseverance and stubborn will manifested as the lightning bolt (alongside her need for speed and passion for flying that we see expressed more clearly and consistently as an adult), and the crown is self-explanatory. And as for Pipp, she's just a little kid, here. While it's really not executed the best, we can assume that she was always too shy to perform in front of anybody. Seeing her sister do something amazing gave her the courage to do something equally as amazing: come out of her shell, and show off her talent to the world (figuratively speaking, of course). As a child, this would be equally as life changing, and open up SO many doors that we see Pipp clearly walked through as she got older, as she's the popstar we know today. It's not something that hints at a "grand scheme" or "purpose", but it's monumental and life changing all the same, for her. And as for Sunny, your commentary on Sunny's cutie mark story is why I think you were being way too cynical. You were (likely for some sort of comedic effect, though forgive me if I misinterpreted that) focusing on the details of it from the perspective of a disillusioned adult, and not from the perspective of a young child. Her cutie mark story obviously wasn't going to go into extreme detail over everything (like how Sunny's dad seemed to "stand there" and not do anything, or how the two ponies only got half a cup of lemonade each). Those aren't what we should've been focusing on, and thus weren't important to her cutie mark story. Sunny mediated as best as she could, and managed to solve an argument. It gave her a sense of fulfillment, and SAW, directly, what problem solving and kindness can do, and what sorts of changes it can bring about. Argyle was most likely GOING to step in, but Sunny thought fast, and just did what she felt was best at the time. Do I think it was executed perfectly? Do I think her cutie mark makes perfect sense, in comparison to how she got it, and what she discovered her special talent is? No, of course not. I could easily see it being a symbol of trailblazing, though- like a comet shooting through the sky, LEADING the way for better things to come. But that's just my personal interpretation. I agree, hers and Hitch's definitely... could've been a lot more clear. But, ultimately, I just think you missed the point for most of their cutie mark stories, and thus missed how impactful they were to the Mane 5. It was a very nice video, and I loved hearing your takes on them all! I didn't mean for this to come across as me being rude or going "Um, Actually", because I agreed with you on quite a few points. I just felt that you got a little too wrapped up in the negative, and you couldn't see the positive. I'm not the biggest fan of G5 whatsoever, and it does SOOO many things wrong, but it also does a few things right- or at the very least, well enough to the point that they make sense. Even the most poorly made stories can have some moments that are worth appreciating. Love your videos, hope you have a good one :)

What did you expect them to do? Have the cutie mark origins be part of a separate episode and make a carbon copy of Cutie Mark Chronicles? They don't have time or budget to flesh out the mane 5's representation or explain Seashell's uniqueness or what a "Sprout"-ing beet represents! "Oh, look at the horses with symbols! Ooh, watch them glow! Oh no, they being stolen! Don't question any of it! We don't have time to explain it to your 4-year old kid!"
