So after numerous videos analyzing chapter 4 of Make Your Mark, it's time for the big video and review the overall chapter. And I will say... it's better... than the previous chapters. So join me as we dive into chapter 4 and see what this release did right and where it missed the mark.

06:50 OBJECTION! By Sunny's comment, is seems clear that Maretime bay have confiscated the Canterlogic factory following the incidents of the movie. Yes, that is a thing a society can do. Ownership of private property is not absolute, and may be at the mercy of the state and/or its people. Furthermore, based on current showing of Maretime Bay's govermental structure, or rather lack thereof, Maretime bay may be an autonomous collective (organized anarchy), in which case, private property would very much be on the whim of popular opinion. Thus, the factory would belong to the community.

One thing that bothers me about Make Your Mark is how anticlimactic most episodes are. When it looks like something interesting is going to happen, it just doesn't. Nothing feels like it matters. I mean, Sprout could have been written out of the first episode and nothing would change (actually, so could Pipp and Hitch tbh). And when you compare Jinxie Games to an episode like Fall Weather Friends or Sonic Rainboom, in terms of the character motivations and the resolution, it's night and day. I think the reason people latch onto Misty's subplot so much is that everything else is just really boring. On that note, one interesting aspect of Misty's inner conflict that is brought up in this episode (and that I don't think you mentioned in your video about her) is that she actually resents the mane 5 for having the life she wishes she had. She uses that to rationalize hurting them to serve Opaline and get what she wants ("They already have each other and their cutie marks"). She is like a less subtle version of SciTwi in Friendship Games. She chooses to do something she knows she shouldn't, because she doesn't feel like she belongs in the world that will be hurt by her actions. And just like SciTwi, what breaks her resolve is seeing the effects of her choices on someone she really cares for. Aside from that, in the beginning of the show people kept saying that all the unanswered questions were not a shortcoming of the writing, because it was just part of the mystery and they were going to be answered eventually (I might have said that myself). But now it feels like these questions just keep piling up and time is running out to answer them, not to mention that they don't feel like they form a coherent picture to begin with. I'd love for this show to be like Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts or Attack on Titan, which drop a series of bombshells halfway through that turn the story upside down, make all the pieces fall into place, and put all the previous events in a new perspective, but I just don't see that happening here. I think most questions will be left as an exercise to the viewer.

You know, if G5 had been what Hasbro ran with INSTEAD of G4, it would be recognized as what it is - pretty much average kids' TV fare for the modern day. Better than G3/3.5, at least. But nothing to get particularly excited about, either. It probably would have come, gone, and been forgotten, neither hated nor beloved save by what there still was of the MLP community before Lauren Faust came along.

And that's the problem right there! 12:17 Sunny's lack of a parent guidance. It would've been much better if Sunny's father was either still around or if Sunny was interested in some of the things he was in and had stories of both her and her friends going on adventures together in search of the things he was interested in. They need more morals for Sunny because they don't have much centered around her character.

I love chapter 4 I loved the special, I love Opaline's backstory, I love the fight between Sunny and Opaline and I love that Misty got her cutie mark.

You're overthinking things. First, as I've said, Many, Many, Many times in my various comments, this is a new show, so they START SMALL! Second: Some of these items are new yo the show, do there's no time to fill the audience in on everything. And speaking from a writing standpoint, they don't really need to. It ruins the mystery if everything is explained. Third: there are plenty of good episodes in this show, they're just on a smaller scale. They're either humorous mishaps I.E Growing Pains or Cutie Mark Swap. Or Slice of Life I.E Winter Wishday, a little peak inti the holidays of the various ponys. Plus, that whole building theft you mentioned. Sunny did mention she wanted the communitys opinion. Therefore, she could have gone to Phyllis and received permission, Sprout not being there as he was busy shadowing others. On that note, he was never supposed to play a major role in the show. There's not much to do with him, he's just a lazy loser who hides behind his mummy. All the things you mentioned about G4 didn't come til later. G5 is in the same position G4 was in it's first season. If another batch of episodes is ordered, maybe they'll try experimenting. Til then, be patient, relax and enjoy it. P.S if you want G5 at it's worst, Watch TYT.

I agree with just about everything you said in this comment except for the last part. While TYT may have a lot of weird and obscure moments, I wouldn't call it a "bad" show as it's had plenty of bright spots too. Plus, I personally find TYT better than Pony Life.

Yeah..... G5 is there. It is a distraction. Voice acting is less phoned in and reeking of cast never seeing one another but just doing their thing in separate booths at separate times. It is almost like somebody at Hasbro decided that they need to do everything they can to drive away those with disposable income so that only the youngest audience even cares about the show and by extension the toys. Then again, there is a rumor that what killed Teen Titans (not TT-GO) was that girls were buying "boy toys" and so somehow taking away from the girl toy money like it isn't the same handful of companies that do both. Or perhaps someone thinks that kids are dumb and that G4 was far to intellectual and advanced for pre-teens to follow.

Here's something interesting about the Bridlewood stock episodes. This was the 2nd time Sofia Wylie voiced a character in a 40+ min special that also featured a song Sofia herself sings.

I have one objection. We have to still keep in mind that G5 in totality is only S1 and less than S2 in length compared to G4. The first two seasons of G4 weren't known for plot.

I must admit, Make Your Mark Chapter 4 is better than the previous chapters, although it couldn't beat the best season of FiM.

I don't think anyone would claim otherwise. FiM was catching lightning in a bottle. The fact that Master Code says the best episode of MYM was on par the an average episode of FiM ignores just how high of a praise that should be. Comparing G5 to G4 is like comparing Weird Al to Mozart. They're not comparable because of how different they are.

The troggles look like deformed Pac-man ghosts. It certainly doesn't make sense there is a lack of conflict between the bands. Perhaps the writers put in the headlining act, but then forgot all about it. The weakest episode to me is "Sunny Side Up". Why would Phyllis give up her whole factory? She could've turned into something else, that doesn't involve anti-unicorn and anti-pegasus weaponry. There's nothing in "A Little Horse", that he haven't already seen in the Tell Your Tale episode "A Day in the Life". While I like Misty's story for reformation, I think it's anticlimactic that the Mane Five don't defeat Opaline proper, so they must be a glutton for punishment to want her to exact revenge against her and Misty must be quite the masochist to continue to endure Opaline's cruelty. And I have to say that the CGI alicorns Luna and Celestia look hideous compared to their original 2D animated look.

i think the troggles steal voices because they are comming out when its loud so it distracts them you get it so they are stealing these voices so they dont have to come out and get distracted

My official reasoning is G5 lives in an alternate timeline G4. One where Twilight had to relinquish her rule before she became a fully grown alicorn (hence her appearance in the message). There’s just no way to justify this show taking place in the actual G4 universe…

Opaline's powers: . She has a vast "Tank" of mana just by being an alicorn. . She naturally generates some mana of her own every day, this alone COULD slowly recharge her "tank" up to full. . She chooses to use some of her available mana every day to slowdown her aging (by a factor of about 1 millon) aging a single heartbeat per week; this is the main reason she can never fully recover her full powers just by waiting. . Because she lives alone (Misty was under her care, did not had useful magic until recently & now she rarely stays in the castle for long), it means Opaline has to do ALL chores [helping herself with a bit of magic here and there]. . She can absorb small ammounts of "free" magic if it is of the same elements than her (fire or shadow). -> She used most of her shadow magic in chapter 1 (disrupting the Prisbeam & opening a Gate to the "Shadowfell" Realm). . She can NOT drain magic from living beings directly [this ability is exclusive of Tirek, he was special]. -> This is how she needs an artifact as intermediate "storage" to drain vast ammounts of magic [The Dragon Stone just happens to be tailored for the type she needs].

It is implied that the Dragon Stone was "inactive" for the same reason Dragons were "sleeping" & dragon eggs like Sparky could not hatch: -> The "barrier" setup by Twilight over Equestria actively supressed magic [it seems to allow partial cutiemark magic & supernatural senses like Luminiscence vision]. Once the Unity Crystals begun "radiating" a constant stream of magic (Prisbeam), it overcame the anti-magic supression field [but not necesarily destroying it]; allowing the normal expression of natural magic in ponies and other creatures. -> The over-arc of the main series could be to find a way to break Twilight's spell.

I will agree, G5 could and should have been so much better than it currently is. the G5 movie clearly shows that. but then again, the movie had probable a few years maybe to be worked on, which allowed it to become much better. as for the episodes, they seem to only have a few months of work before they are released. keep in mind, 3D animation is much tougher to do. and i know a lot of people would say "they they should have stuck with 2D animation instead" i commend them for trying something new. after having 2D animation for 4 generations, it's nice to see them try 3D. and i welcome it. true, it might have been better if they stuck with 2D animation, but despite G5s' flaws. it is still something i will continue to watch

The lack of sense of urgency is also present in the 1st story arc of the comics. Seriously, why are there 5 stories of characters just fafing about when there's a doomsday event in progress... That would be like at the start of G4 comics when Chrysalis kidnaps the CMC, the Mane 6 would just meander about thinking about dealing with casual everyday stuff before actually doing something. There was literally no reason to stretch out the (already bad) Discord arc to 10 chapters, with 5 of them being filler.

I dont care much for g5 I don't hate it for because it isnt g4 I just hate how sloppy they made it It feels more like a cash grab than anything The lore is broken, the story telling is a gamble, it has no good real reason on why g4 is brought into this, and when they try to build on or answer questions or when they try to fill holes in the lore and story telling it just bring up more questions If i could i would just buy mlp as a whole and sell it to someone who actually cares about the show and know what they are doing And at a discount too Because it hurts seeing the franchise being treated like this I don't like it when my favorite things are treated like trash or a cash cow I just hope it gets better from here

You got into G5 hoping to like it as much as G4. And that's exactly the problem you have. Intentional or not, you placing your expectations of G5 at the same level as G4. Peronally, I don't think it's intentional on your part. But most of the problems you have sound like the result of comparing G5 with G4. I'll grant that they made the mistake of making A New Generation with a different writing team than MYM. If you're saying that your favorite episode of MYM so far is on par with an average episode of FiM, I'd say that's pretty good when you take into account that the first Season of FiM didn't get truly rolling until about half-way through, and that the Seasons only got better from there, and considering that the episode count for MYM is still lower than Season 1 of FiM (Season 2 if you count watch time). Although you say that only that episode qualifies as "passable". So which is it? Passable, or on par with an average episode of FiM? Because passable is not a synonym for average. At what point is it implied that the rubies kill them? They seem pleased when they grab them, so it's likely that the rubies simply satiate them. The Troggles probably aren't even malicious, but just some sort of magical creature (a fey creature if this were D&D). First of all, Sprout never owned Canterlogic. He only commandeered his MOTHER'S company. As for the building itself, who's to say the building isn't owned by the city (otherwise known as tax funded, thus making it public property)? And even if Phyllis did own the building, who's to say she didn't give them permission to use it, or otherwise just abandoned the building? If the building is abandoned, that doesn't mean Sprout automatically inherits it. And why is the ownership of the building such a big issue for you? This really is just you being nitpicky. Your issue with the eyeshadow isn't even a nitpick. That's just your personal bias. I agree with that opinion, but I don't let it become a bias. You're objectively wrong about character growth in G5. Perhaps there's not too much so far. But in Chapter 4 specifically, there are two specific moments of character growth that I can think of. Pipp learning to spend time not constantly blogging because she was sick. And Zipp revealing a more nerdy side of herself. Combine that with the series as a whole including the movie, Hitch has had the least amount of character development, followed by Sunny, who hasn't needed much from the start (which is ironic considering the the two characters with the least amount of development are the two that we've known for the longest amount of time). Zipp has had the most development, followed by Misty of all characters. And when it comes to tracking G4 character progression, before Season 4, Applejack reached her peak early on in Season 1 before simply stagnating. Applejack has had the least amount of character progression of the G4 Mane 6. Even after including Starlight Glimmer in the mix, Applejack still had the least amount of character progression. Here's the thing about why Sunny is stagnating. Where is she supposed to progress to? Simply put, Sunny is the Anti-Twilight. Almost everything about Sunny is the inverse of what Twilight was. Twilight was an introvert who was antisocial and tended to be a bit naive before the world around her changed her. Sunny is an extrovert who's more than willing to make friends and tended to be more aware of how the world is supposed to be than those around her and is defined by how she changed the world around her. For this reason, Sunny can't grow as without that growth being lateral. (Technically, G5 as a wgike is the inverse of G4.)

Sunny has plenty of room to grow. In the movie, she goes behind Hitch's back to sabotage Canterlogic and then gets annoyed when he calls her out. Then she cuts Izzy off in a really rude way while she's trying to show off her tea set. This doesn't lead to anything later on. And in Make Your Mark she's constantly complaining about things not being done her way, acting like trivial matters are urgent and critical, and then wondering why no one takes her seriously. And things just work out for her without her having to realize what she's doing wrong. It just comes across as if it's everyone else who's being stupid (and sometimes they are, just to make her look better). We see this in Ali-Conned, Winter Wishday, and the Manesquerade ball, for example. That's why it feels like she's not going anywhere, because she does need to go somewhere. Twilight's development in season 1 feels more consistent. We see that her main character traits are her insatiable hunger for knowledge and her desire to do things "by the book", and we see how this can be both a blessing (e.g., Boast Busters) and curse (e.g., Feeling Pinkie Keen). And since she recognizes that she's not very good at interpersonal relationships, she makes a conscious effort to pay attention to the cues around her and figure out what she's supposed to do. Then sometimes she gets it wrong and learns from it. It helps that this is literally her job, of course.

Technically, Gillian M. Berrow (who worked on the New Generation movie) also works on the Make Your Mark series as showrunner. She was also one of the main writers on Friendship Is Magic starting in season 5, so comparisons to the previous show are inevitable.

@@BlythePennyBicycle21 It's still a mostly new cast. But even if Lauren Faust herself was in charge of the creation of G5, it still wouldn't change the fact that G5 is a different entity than G4. Comparing G4 with G5 is like comparing Star Trek: The Orignal Series with Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Or comparing Classic Doctor Who with Torchwood. Or Star Trek: TOS with the J.J. Abrams reboot movies. Or MLP G1 with My Little Pony Tales. Just because two things exist within the same universe, it doesn't mean they are compatible. Just because G5 takes place in the same universe as G4, it doesn't change the fact that you're comparing apples to oranges.
