Recently I had the distinct pleasure of sitting down with the incredibly skilled Johnny Hiland. This interview got heavy fast, and we covered some fascinating topics that really pull the curtain back from what being a professional guitarist looks like. Also, there's talk of Johnny's new album throughout this interview. The album is set to be released in late October, 2020, and we cannot wait for it to come out!
I want to say a giant thank-you to Johnny for his friendship, hospitality, and honesty during the filming of this video.

This is easily one of the best Johnny Hiland interviews I’ve seen. Just to touch on Johnny’s statements at the end.. people bash and name call Johnny Hiland on the internet?? Johnny is the most kind hearted gentlemen you’d ever want to meet, on top of being one of the most technically versatile guitarists in the world without a single shred of ego. I’m a better guitar player for having found Johnny’s music. Thank you for this video Cody, and thank you Johnny for just being you, the world of music is a much greater place because of you.

Thank you for that compliment, and I could not agree with you more. Johnny is a genuinely good person and he would do just about anything to help someone. He has helped me with my playing so much, as he has so many guitarists. Thank you for watching and commenting!

Fantastic interview Cody, well done!! Johnny is an incredibly versatile guitarist who's sound is so distinct!! I love Johnny for waking me back up to playing guitar. I was turning 65 and feeling kind of bummed out for it and then I saw a Johnny video on KZbin. I couldn't believe the sound I was hearing and went out and bought a guitar and started practicing and following Johnny!! I have become good friends with Johnny and his wife and they have made my life so much more rewarding. Johnny also has the love of the Lord in him, very strongly and he is a wonderful human to talk to. I have taken 2 live lessons with Johnny and they count as some of the best things I have done in my life! I owe Johnny my respect and love as he made me a new person who now could give a hoot about my age and loving the Lord for bring me to Johnny. The guitar has also become my best friend during this craziness we are going through. Thank you Cody for such a great and informative interview. Johnny is the man!! Thank you so much from Costa Rica!!!

Johnny and Kim are dear friends, and I have known Johnny for many years, Johnny deserves everything good that he is blessed with. I don't get to see him as much as I did in Tennessee, but he and Kim, are always in our thoughts. There's an extra joy to be had with releasing your own music, beyond what he said. When you release your own music, you own all of it. When you release music through a Record Label, *they* own all of it, and not just that. They basically own you as well.

It's impossible to dislike this guy. He's just so positive. I've never been a fan of country music (I grew up with my mom listening to popular country junk like Billy Ray Cyrus) but I could listen to Johnny play for hours. Speaking of which, the riffs at the end were way too short. I love the sound where he pre-bends the string to hit a note then slowly bends down to the original note. Seriously great stuff.

I had the privilege of meeting Johnny after one of his shows at Acme Feed & Seed in downtown Nashville a couple years ago. Upon meeting him, you would have thought we had been best friends for ten years. He was so gracious. As soon as he found out I was a guitar player, he immediately took off his guitar and slung it over my shoulder excited for me to check out what he was playing (he had recently started playing Kiesel guitars). He was nothing but class through and through.

Johnny makes me want to be a chicken picker since i heard is music a couple years ago. I´m from Argentina, and the thing of many of you didn´t know but you can imagine, is that this style almost doesn´t exist in this part of the continent... but cats like him, Thom Bresh, his father Merle, Chet, Brent Mason, Jerry Reed and i can go on and on, are such and inspiration to learn the thumpicking thing and the chicken pickin. I´m 29 and i play since 18, playing and recording from rock n roll to technical death-thrash, crust-grindcore, fusion, jazz and now i´m into this... so the only thing i can a say is a big THANK YOU JOHNNY for the inspiration, and make him know that his art came across the lands to change my life... i hope meet him someday!! great great interview! and you win a new subscriber man! Guys like Johnny should be headlining the CMA awards and be on the top of the country charts. People are just delusional not having this man in the forefront of the genre. JH will go down as one of if not the greatest to pick up the guitar along with hendrix, vaughan, albert, bb, freddie etc.

I definitely wouldn’t want to speak on Johnny’s behalf, but I can tell you that when he finds something he likes, he absolutely loves sharing it with others. Sometimes things don’t work out for different reasons, whether they be changes in management or with the company’s personnel, or just finding something that works even better for you. I’m really happy I’ve had a chance to get to know Johnny, and I can tell you he really appreciates fans like yourself who are along for the long haul regardless of the changes!

@@CodyJungGuitar Well, it's encouraging to me because I can play multiple instruments and am getting back into recording myself. I play like a 3rd grader compared to the worst Nashville player, but I can make a little noise. And his do-it-yourself approach appeals to me. Also, I don't listen to her music so much, but I like Billie Eilish for the same reason. Thanks for the reply! Have a great day.
