@@Zhortac If it makes you feel a little better, Ron Moore and Brannon Braga wrote the Veridian III battle as being un-shielded Enterprise vs a Vor'Cha-class cruiser. But it was decided that the Vor'Cha physical model was not "movie caliber" (i.e. the model would have obviously been a model on the big screen). And the producers were unwilling to spend the money to refurbish the existing model or build a new one. "Better" yet, they could recycle the recently created Bird-of-prey explosion from ST6 to save even more money. So as-is so common, saving/making money won out over the art and story. But the PLAN was there to at least make more sense (i.e. Galaxy Class versus the most powerful ship the Klingons had (this was before the introduction of the Negh'Var)).

As she powered up and emerged from Bay 12 it seemed to this old man that she was saying "I have one last adventure and one good fight left in me. Let's make it one for the history books." In "Measure of a Man" an Admiral visiting the ship said "For 500 years every ship that has carried the name Enterprise has become a legend. This one is no different." He was going to become more right than anyone could guess at the time. "... and we must succeed! Let's ensure that history never forgets the name ... Enterprise!" "I rest, but only lightly. If called I stand ready to do again the things that I was born to do and if I fall in the doing do not mourn me. Know instead that I met my end with courage and remember me that way. My name is Enterprise." The note about the ship "resting lightly" is a nod to another historic ship which was retired after WWII but was returned to action an unprecedented three times. "When Captain Peniston took the podium at the ship’s 1969 decommissioning ceremony, he spoke directly to the ship, saying: “. . . rest well, yet sleep lightly, and hear the call, if again sounded, to provide ‘firepower for freedom’ [the ship’s motto].” The battleship New Jersey (BB 62) was returned to service for the third time in 1982.

Why did they decommission all those good ships (Galaxy-D, Intrepid-Voyager, Defiant, Akira-Class, Nebula-class, Saber-class...)? The Excelsior-class had a hull-life of 80 years and even exceeded that.
@andrewnlarsen4 ай бұрын
Akiras and Defiants are still very much active. Intrepid-Voyager she has truly been to hell and back and they wanted to preserve her for while most of Starfleet was sadly fighting a war, Voyager fulfilled Starfleet's mission of exploration (though not in the way anyone intended).
@craigward348Ай бұрын
They decommissioned those ships because for one reason or another they couldn't stay in service. Be it because the main design was so old that continued upgrades (the constitution class) would either damage the frame of the ship or turn the ship into an entirely different ship, or because starfleet didn't have use for a ship like that anymore ( the Defiant class) or the ship itself had been through so much that repairing her was just too extensive and it would be more productive to just build a new ship as once you strip her down as far as they feared they needed to go they feared that they'd find far more extensive damage than they could ever functionally repair. (Intrepid class Voyager) and that's just some of the reasons I wouldn't be surprised if at some point the USS Enterprise F joins her sisters the A and the D in said museum.

You let episodes of DS9 and a slow moving Galaxy cloud your judgement. First, in a battle where ships are literally just meters off your hull, you don't just speed around. Second, that cube was 10 times the size of the J25 cube, she had PLENTY of room to speed around at full impulse. Also with no thousand strong crew or their belongings, no cargo and Data at the helm, I mean do you need a slide rule to figure this out? We ate it up because it's believable.

Actually most of the interior of the enterprise is composed of extractable modular units , depending on the function served. The interior can be altered to service a particular mission as needed. In all likelihood, the saucer was near fully decked out, whereas the drive section probably had on the engineering section and maybe a deck or two. Other than that, the manoeuvring capability we've seen on screen isn't that ridiculous. Plus, the drive section was used during the Dominion War, so it's probably that the engines and other elements were attuned toward combat speed and manoeuvrability.
