Helen of Troy, the most beautiful woman ... also known as "the face that launched a thousand ships," because when she was stolen from her husband, the king, and taken to Troy, war was declared. The warriors boarded their ships and sailed to Troy. So in this song, the singer is saying his love is the most beautiful woman, but he doesn't know where to go in her cause. As for songs ... some people have always been professional singers who sing anything. Other people are song writers, and a very few are singer-songwriters. The 70s, in particular, was the era of singer-songwriters. But some of the most famous singers, like Elvis, Sinatra, and so on, they sang songs written by others.

I am a writer also therefore I understand what you're saying you put your soul on your paper and you want to express what your heart is telling you. Therefore if somebody else is writing the words you want to sing it is not your soul expressing your heart❤❤❤❤❤❤ shadow

Elton John only wrote music. All his lyrics were written for him (largely by Bernie Taupin). Some of the greatest singers ever didn't write their own songs. They interpreted them. Karen Carpenter never wrote a song but she gave other people's songs a power and depth that no one else could. But full marks to those artists who write their own material.

I married my lovely wife in 1979 and this song was sung during our wedding. Still brings a tear to the eyes to hear it. Just my $0.02

Elton John created all his music around Bernie Taupin’s lyrics. The same with Gary Brooker of Procul Harum. Brooker had a publicized law suit 2006 with Mathew Fisher, who developed the iconic chords on the Hammond Organ, regarding royalties… Fisher won the lawsuit…

Songwriting is a huge industry. Thousands of people just write songs. They aren't singers, they just write. It's been this way since the beginning of time. Some great artists, were not songwriters. Songwriters pitch their songs to other artists or recording labels.

Bread was a hit machine in the first half of the 1970s. They are the definition of 'soft rock'. I called them 'White Bread' back in the day (ha). But I've grown to appreciate them.

Bands like Three Dog Night and the Carpenters mostly didn’t write their own songs. There are and always have been singers, songwriters, and singer-songwriters. Elvis and Sinatra couldn’t write a song if you held their dog hostage.

I’m sure some of the best songwriters couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket.. if someone else didn’t sing their songs, the songs would be lost.. sometimes things happen that way. Great reactions 👍👍

Everybody that sings cannot songs just like everybody that writes cannot sing so at the end of the year is the Grammys they give Awards for songwriting as well as sing .

I encourage you listen to DAVID GATES' (songwriter and lead vocal of BREAD) masterpiece: "Suite: Clouds, Rain" (taken from solo album 'First', 1974). The composition is divided into three movements. Sublime words and music. Deeply and intelligently emotional. Goosebumps guaranteed. Thanks.

If you're looking for another smooth love song, you might try Roberta Flack, "Feel Like Makin' Love." It's NOT the same song as the Bad Company song with the same title.

David Gates the lead singer wrote this song. It is his song. Also this song made it all the way to #4 on the 1971 Billboard chart.

Most rock bands and rock solo artists wrote their own songs. A lot of country, especially in the last 30 years and pop music DIDN’T write their own songs. I feel the same as you. You should write your own music. I especially HATE KZbin karaoke singer like Tommy Johansson and Dimash really need to write songs, get a band, record and sell their albums and go on tour or they’re just karaoke singers. I won’t even listen to them.

I identify with your words on not being okay with somebody else writing your songs, that it wouldn't be your song...there are real recording artists or performers who have done it Grandly, like Judy Garland immortalizing Over the Rainbow; I, myself, like you, need to write; I do sing well, yet I can't write music...I, instead, write poems. I feel that while i can sing, and I can write meaningful, original poetry, writing poetry compensates for my need to have my stamp on something, and then I can forgive myself for singing other people's words

Beautiful song! I understand your thoughts on songwriting, but for instance, I’m not sure Elton John would have become a superstar without his songwriting partner Bernie Taupin writing his lyrics.

I think collaborations work also,, Bernie Taupin, wrote fantastic poems, then gave those poems, to Elton John, wrote the music to some of the best songs in popular music ever.

So many good bread songs couple of my favorite welcome to the music great literal song about being a rockstar, guitar man, beautiful beautiful song about playing guitar in a band Sweet surrender amazing, let your love go another good song, but to be honest for five albums that they put out I don’t think there’s a bad song on them Enjoy your reactions. If someone else writes the words and you can deliver it well, why not have someone write the words. Especially if you, the writer, knows that the singer is able to convey the meaning of the song better than just the lyrics. Think of it as a powerful preacher who is able to preach the Word so that the one listening understands its message. What do you say, does that make sense?!
