David Gates definitely wrote the song everything I own about this fatherhood passed away he was his hero but she had stated himself in his own words that he intentionally wrote this song so that it could have another meaning for other people and that's why it's seems as though it's such a powerful love song when and reality is to love song about the relationship he had with his father.

Well, it may be that because Bread was touring he was separated from the woman he loved. His life was making music but maybe it wasn't practical for her to go on tour with him. That is a tough life - living out of a bus and cheap hotels.

You have to read the next line with the first. "If a man could be two places at one time, I'd be with you tomorrow and today". In other words, if it were possible, he would be with her all the time...every day; past, present and future all at once. I had this played at my wedding in 1985.

"If a man could be two places at one time", he is saying that he would still choose to be with her in both of them. Those two places being tomorrow and today so in both places, he would always still only be with his love. She is all to him over anyplace, anyone, or anything else.

Wow you clapped at a Bread song!!!! That's amazing. I have a special place in my heart for David Gates the lead singer because he's from my home state of Oklahoma. His lyrics are magical . I believe that when he said be two places at one time I'd be with you. I think he meant I'd be where I had to be for my business or travel but I'd be with you at the same time if possible. I think you would really like his song called GUITAR MAN and it's not the one like Elvis Presley did it is one written by David Gates . How old to give a little perspective of how old is song is, David Gates is now 81 years old. If you Google a picture of him from his videos you will see the song is very old but very very special

I sung this song at my Highschools Bluejay pageant. My father, mother, and my boyfriend's parents were there and my father started to cry and so did my boyfriend's mother, who is now my mother and law and has been for 39 years, and they both asked my mother did you know she could sing like that and she told them yes. Thank you for the memory. Yes it is one that you never forget. My husband was in the service the Army and I was a senior in highschool and we got married in 1984 until this day and forever.

The "be two places at one time..." lyric, as some had pointed out, was due to his touring and being away from his wife. That being said, I always interpreted it as being, even if a man could be two places at one time, he'd pick her over anything...wouldn't even use the ability to be somewhere else even though he could.

i grew up in the 60's as a hard rock fan along with psychedelic and prog rock and was a bassist in a couple of bands then. most of my friends trashed bread when they first came out as too soft or even worse - elevator music - and way too poppy. i was the exception and recognized the genius of david gates and his voice. i would listen to jethro tull one day and bread the next and the o'jays the day after that. backstabbers is one of the best motown songs ever. great music is just that regardless of genre

All I can figure is perhaps that line was put in there because of the massive amount of Manpower that was in Vietnam at the time and I know he wasn't there but maybe it had something to do with that because if he were there he would need to be in two places at once to be with her I'm not sure that's true but I do know that at the time this song was a big hit it was well into the Vietnam War and there were so many men that were separated from their girlfriends and wives.

David Gates is the lead singer of Bread, & they had a long string of beautiful ballads. You should really check out Aubrey next time. The line "If a man could be two places at one time". I always interpreted this as a man serving in Vietnam because this was popular towards the last of that war.

The line you're questioning, I've always perceived it as he has to be away from her for too long, for whatever reason. It could be work, a business trip... Wherever he is, he wants to be with her. I'm pretty sure she's alive & the only woman in his life. Great song!!!
