I retired at age 53 and am now in my early 60s. Many people resisted me because they couldn't understand the idea of not working if you don't have to. I considered my life to be in phases. I worked very hard to achieve what I have now, but in my last years, I owe it to myself to "stop and smell the roses." After I retired, I left the nation and now reside in Latin America. I was able to enjoy my new surroundings and escape from all the bad things that were going on in America. I haven't yet encountered anyone who laments their retirement.

Nice way to retire. For me, I believe retirees who struggle to meet their basic needs are the ones who could not accumulate enough money during their active years to meet their needs. Retirement choices determine a lot of things. My wife and I both spent same number of years in the civil service, she invested through a wealth manager and myself through the 401k. We both still earning after our retirement fund has grown way more than it would have with just the 401(k). Haha.

It's unfortunate most people don't have such information. I don't really blame people who panic. Lack of information can be a big hurdle. I've been making more than a million dollars by just investing through an advisor, and I don't have to do much work. Doesn't matter if the economy is misbehaving; great wealth managers will always make returns.

I think this is something I should do, but I've been stalling for a long time now. I don't really know which firm to work with; I feel they are all the same but it seems you’ve got it all worked out with the firm you work with so i surely wouldn’t mind a recommendation.

I definitely share your sentiment about these firms. Finding financial advisors like Deborah Lynn Dilling who can assist you shape your portfolio would be a very creative option. There will be difficult times ahead, and prudent personal money management will be essential to navigating them.

I think you'd be okay to owner occupy a duplex. It worked out good for me. Just make sure, it's in a place where you own the property, not an urban area. If the property's cheap and you can cash flow it you can pretty much have free housing. The place I bought the rent was $700 for the other unit. It's now bumped up to $1,300 over the last 5 years and allowed me to pay off the place rapidly

Stack the cash in the brokerage account or real estate. I have lots of cash stuck in retirement accounts which are essentially locked until 59. Need to build up the income outside those accounts to retire early. The tax break locks you into the system.

You can withdraw from retirement accounts without penalty before 59, you just have to follow some procedural stuff to make it happen. There's NO reason not to max out your retirement account before doing anything else with money you intend to not use until retirement.

Buy silver. I’m not a financial advisor though. Would not invest in stocks for awhile…. Real estate will be a good investment in another year or 2 there will be a crash….

Crash caused by what? Liar loans caused the 2008 crash. There is not anything like that currently.
