That's the thing I think is so impressive. Both of these movies juggle a lot of main characters, arcs, locations, major and minor villains. It already feels like we've spent about as much time with Miles and Gwen as any of the live action Spider-Men.

@@nathanball99With other superhero movies, even the most recent, even if it IS done well, the soundtrack doesn’t feel as distinguishable as it needs to be, with each superhero fight/dramatic music feeling like they could be placed with other dramatic music. Daniel Pemberton’s music in Miles’s own words, does its own thing. You could still hear the deep horns, but they synch so well with the events in the story that it can fit with the Spider-Verse movies and them ALONE.

The 'what's up danger' scene is unique because it was conceived by the Spanish artist Alberto Mielgo as a proof of concept for Sony. He wrote, designed and animated that piece before there was even a script for Into the Spider-Verse. So it existed completely outside of that movie. Probably one of the best moving-storyboards I've ever seen.

This movie made me realize that Spider-Man has become a Shakespearian-type character. He’s so well known that new authors can use references from his previous stories to add depth to characters, and even change those tropes to tell new stories with new meaning and commentary. It happens all the time with Shakespeare’s characters, it’s metatextuality-really amazing to see that in a Spider-Man movie.

Disagree. The climax was the giant chase scene which was epic. You don’t need to punch people for there to be a “battle.” It’s like complaining that Se7en ended without a climax when the emotional reveal/twist was the climax, just as the twist in this movie was the final pump of adrenaline for the climax. So imagine Se7en but instead of them having the killer in custody, it ends with the box and the promise of “we’re going to get him” which is a new story to continue on the tapestry of that epic. I thought it was perfect 10/10.

And then going to a race, but right before the big event starts you turn your car off, get out, leave your car at the starting line and yell to everyone as you walk away "let's do this tomorrow instead". There is no conclusion to this film. You could technically say that Gwen gets an ending in a way, but our main character does not. A lot of people compare this to empire, but I don't think that works bc in empire we get the whole "Luke I am your father" reveal and confrontation before the ending of the film. We don't get anything similar here, essentially it's the equivalent of Darth Vader and Luke walking up to the room they're about to meet in at the end and the screen just cuts to black as a tbc message pops up. Kind of annoying. Everything else is perfect about this film though I'm gonna be honest.

I personally really liked the slow pace of the first act. Because the moments were great for me. It made me love Gwen. And it delves more into Miles’ relationship with his parents. Particularly his mom, and that was particularly therapeutic for me. It also gives Miles the motivation to go against Miguel (amongst others). When his mom tells him to never let anyone else tell him he doesn’t belong. It sets up Miles vehemently going against Miguel telling him he’s a mistake, and standing against the Spider Society. It made me really ship Miles and Gwen, as friends and as future romantic partners. The scene with them hanging upside down together was beautiful. The scene where Gwen is investigating the Spot’s earlier crime scene and she’s reporting to Jessica. Meanwhile Miles snuck up on her and is invisible while looking her in the eyes as she’s explaining her lies out loud, was brilliant and emotional.

Are these bots comments? This sequel is absolutely not close to the original. This is frozen2 to frozen, kungfu panda2 to the original, and so many others. I am glad its sucessful cuz the original deserved more... but I will not support this delusion that it is a better movie. The soul of the first one was miles and peter parker dynamic of grumpy teacher and a student. Gwen too was more fun when her and miles were just getting to know each other. Added to those fun parts, is the relationship and death of the uncle.. it all was done and fit so well and knew how to both fun and heavy moments. What do we get at that level in this one? Gwens backstory that we seen few times before, miles getting like 3 long scenes to confirm what we already knew, he is a teenager and has loving parents. And then its convoluted plot that gets explained in the last 30 min of the movie. No, the indian, pregnant, punk, vampire spiderpeople... none of them had dynamics and fun of the original core characters in the first one... I think the sequel will do better because dynamics between prowler and spiderman and the uncle has really great potential. But this movie is at best 7/10.. except animation, that is truly 11/10, but unfortunately that was counted to the main score.

I personally found some of the writing to be shaky. Gwen's Peter Parker and the whole thing of how he actively transformed himself into the Lizard "just to be special" or how apparently no one saw/remembered him trying to kill people as a giant Lizard at a school dance and her Dad just accepts that Spiderwoman is a murderer. It also seems a bit odd that no Peter Parker or Spiderman questions Miguel in his information and how they all just accept his theory that only he himself has witnessed (in an event that couldn't even be considered a Peter Parker/Spiderman canon event) - I mean, he traveled to another world to trick a family he was someone he's not and nobody thinks that's just a tiny bit shady or he might be wrong at any point.

I love the way they use the analysis of the Spider-Man narrative within the movie and ties it to what people expect from minority group stories by using that scene with the guidance counselor and the college essay. It sheds so much light on how people think that the stories of marginalized people always have to revolve around trauma to be interesting or to be valid. Miles not only makes the choice to reject that in the movie by rejecting the Spider-Man canon, but the filmmakers reject that THROUGH the movie by not making his story about fitting in as an Afrolatino kid and not centering race trauma in the story. While that is the story of many, it isn’t the story of Miles, and that’s okay. He doesn’t have to justify his right to exist by going through trauma. He is already proud of his culture, and he is no less a spider person if he doesn’t adhere to the “canon.”

@thehumanity0 Outwitting Miguel, Gwen reconciling with her father, Miles coming out to his mom, Spot breaching Miles' universe were all payoffs. Minus definitively defeating an antagonist, they're pretty much going to have to start new arcs for the main characters if the next movie is going to be any good. I'm not denying there's still unfinished business, but I think as a middle chapter of a trilogy, this is as complete as it gets. The only other middle chapter movie that does it better, IMO, is maybe the Two Towers. Think about the first Tobey McGuire Spidey. He kills Goblin takes on the mantle of Spider-Man, but we don't get any resolution to what this means for his relationship with Harry or MJ. And that's the first movie. He just gets to murder the baddie.

Just because there is more to see doesn’t mean what I have seen isn’t perfect in my opinion. I don’t think considering this better than the first is laughable at all, but I totally see why people would think the first is better.

Thank you. I just wrote a fucking thesis a minute ago in the comments about this exact thing. Isolating the reasoning. No climax or a cliffhanger ending = minus points. That's what everyone says. but Infinity War ends on a cliffhanger and everyone says that ones better than endgame. But cliffhanger. we end the movie without an ending to the story. So shouldn't we minus points on it? Or are we just gonna ignore the thought of it NEEDING to be a linear vanilla progression of story telling, and instead ju dging the movie on all of it's feats like we should? Because me for one I love the first one, I was afraid this one wouldnt be as good because sequels rarely are. But I think personally this one was better, but at the very very least, this one holds up perfectly with the 1st movie and both should be heralded as Champions of Animation, and Super hero diamond standard of story telling. Not 1 below the other, both equal sitting at the top. and if the 3rd one holds up, then I want the 3 of them up on that pedestal because they deserve it.

Personally I love the family bits, so many stories with young protagonists either make them dead, conveniently absent or somewhat worried but nowhere near they should with such changes. They really go deep into not only how the mantle screws the life of a high schooler but how is pretty much impossible to the parents be chill with their kid suddenly showing up buff, having time windows where he’s totally unaccounted for and clearly hiding something big and I appreciate how they kept their reaction realistic without turning them into a hindrance in the way of Miles saving the day.

This is probably the most well-spoken video you have put together in a min Marcus...Everything that you said I just felt like you were taking the best version of the thoughts in my head and putting them into a conglomerate project/video...thank you for the effort and the amazing video once again...love you cosmonaut!! So this video gets a tentative 10/10 (with the potential to go higher or lower when the sequel is out. )

Thanks cosmonaut. Not a single other person has reviewed this movie as honestly as you. You are the only person who has encapsulated my feelings on the film. Finally got to watch this film today, and just finished listening to Penguin0z's review of it too. Judging by his reaction, yours, my friend who I saw it with, as well as my own; I think it's safe to say this movie's biggest weakness is just the fact that it ends on a cliff hanger. Because it's the only thing that left me wanting more. And I get it, they obviously wrote a story that was going to need more screen time than 1 film to pull off. Which I can totally appreciate, and I have no doubt that the next part will be a completely satisfying conclusion. Honestly this movie blew the first one out of the water in ever single way except for the cliff hanger ending. Best movie of the year for me, so far anyways, hands down. The fact that is manages to juggle so many ideas and art styles flawlessly - not dropping a single ball once - is absolutely amazing.

Here's what I said to my friends about this film: 8/10 imo, it's half of a movie innit Everything about it is class though, my goodness this film has STYLE. Love how they leaned into the style even more than before and made it absolutely amazing. The colour palettes for each universe and character are unbelievably creative. Some of the emotional scenes especially between Gwen and her dad, the way the backgrounds look and change and the way tu ey portray lighting on their faces... The entire runtime, every action sequence, every movement, every bit of dialogue, just... Its all dripping with swagger. The animators were flexing through the whole film. All the voice acting? The story beats? The OST? The characters portrayed? Small interactions that contributed to the future? If it wasn't half a movie and didn't feel so rushed at times, this would be perfection. I know I clown on the MCU for their constant jokes, but here, it fits. The film takes itself seriously when it needs to and doesn't when its not necessary. The shift from comedic tone to serious is never so jarring as it is in most MCU films. And of course, it helps that theyre not trying to make the animation look realistic in the slightest. 8/10, bit rushed and it's only half a film, but fuck is everything else about this perfect.

i agree with reading the first half of a book analogy you gave, but i also think that while parts feel like theyre unresolved, left for part 2, there are a lot of character arcs in this movie that i feel have a strong enough resolution that this can stand on its own, where i can personally say i enjoyed more then the first, though i also agree with some pacing issues

This movie is incredible. Visually it's almost magical ✨ You can feel the artists' love for the characters and comics. It's dynamic as hell. I did really like how they used color in the scene between Gwen and her dad. I went into this blind so it was so cool to see everything set up, the darker tone, the themes, and character arcs. The wow factor was off the charts. My friend has read the comics but didn't spoil it for me. I loved the first one and I think I love this one even more. Agree the second scene with the parents dragged a bit but knowing now it's a setup for a second part it was important to establish the stakes and conflict into the next film.

The fact that they matched or arguably passed or the quality of the second movie gives me confidence that they will finish stron. To me this seems like a trilogy that had a solid plan from the beginning, unlike the sequels for Star Wars. I have a great feeling about this and that it might be one of the best trilogies I’ve seen

I think the first one's narrative was concluded. The second one makes you want more. The 1st one has an epic scene of the leap of faith. I think the reason why i really like the 2nd is having every single spiderman possible and not affecting narrative. No way home is a nostalgia bait and when you watch a few times, you just fast-forward to when the 3 are on the screen. I like that this film gives every single character something to do. The Canon Event is explained and its heartbreaking. The Spot is gonna be bombastic

I'm in the same boat as you. Saw it last night and while completely mindblowing visually, i thought it dragged a bit and the ending was extremely frustrating to me because i honestly didn't know it was a 2 parter. There was maybe too many characters for my taste and it did feel like a 2 hours exposition. And something else missing as you said was the lack of epic/emotional moments like the what's up danger scene which really still gives me chills. I will be seeing the next one for sure I'm so impressed by the visual work, it deserves a watch just for that. It completely obliterated the first one to the extent it felt like too much at times

Absolutely loved this movie. Phenomenal animation, excellent characters and a killer soundtrack to compliment the ambience of the film. The credits of this movie is one of the only times I stayed in the theatre just to watch it because they were just as captivating as the movie itself. I get why Cosmonaut (and a few others) feel like this movie isn't complete because it's building up to something (as per Loki) but I give that a pass because it not only allows them to tell a grander story with more time, but they'll definitely keep to their promise and give us an ending they want. Hopefully, Loki Season 2 is as good as the first, but I honestly have no doubt Beyond the Spider-Verse will be a great ending.

Before I start the Video: I loved that movie and I love how the Spiderman Franchise gets even better with these kind of storylines. It started all with (unnecessary) reboots from one Character and now they make it look like a Masterplan they build up over years. This movie in particular conviced with the sickest of animation-design and an emotional story I was not expecting. Even the long conversation parts felt lik absolut on point and with nice pictures not boring like in other movies. For example - The Dialog between Gwen and Miles is way more fun to watch with walking on buildings and sitting up side down with an stunning skyline, than any Dialog in the Amazing Spiderman movies between Peter and Gwen. I cant even imagine how much time it takes to make this kind of cinema. I do motion Design myself and seeing the first seconds where the production company intros glitch through diffrent dimensions must have took weeks in the making. I bet if you watch this or the first one frame by frame you will find tons of Easter eggs. For me both movies are 10/10 and I cant wait to see the last one, hoping its going to be and epic ending and creating at the same time the best Heromovie triology of the deacade for me. Now lets see what the pro says about it... :D

"its like reading a book halfway through and calling it 10/10, it wouldnt make any sense to do that" bro YOU did that when you watched samurai jack. Gave it a 10/10 when the revival season was halfway through airing, and we all know how the second half of the season turned out... Its okay to say something is a 10/10 without knowing the conclusion yet, especially in this case since its a complete movie. We havent seen the end yet, but the journey to get there that we've been on has been perfect.
