Fun video. One of the great things about biking in NY was that if something happened along the way (cloudburst, broken spoke, injury or fatigue) you didn't have to worry about biking all the way home. You could hop on the nearest subway and get home that way. My wife and I lived in Bay Ridge in the 90s and we biked from there to Whitestone Queens or to the Throgs Neck Bridge. We biked to L.I. through Rockaway. We biked through Manhattan and out to Queens. I had a spoke snap on me at Avenue T and Nostrand once, so we had to take the Brighton line (it was the D then) to DeKalb and the R back home to 77th Street. I had the bike shop put in heavy duty spokes and have never had to true the wheel since then-- and it's been 29 years and a lot of biking. I'm not sure I'd like the bike lanes they have nowadays. Too many rules to follow. It was more fun when it was a game of dominance and dog-eat-dog.

Very true! I’ve had to take the subway several times when my bicycle had issues.

Wow! They have really set up some nice bike lanes in N.Y.C. . When I was riding a bike there in the 70s, 80s, and even 90s, you just rode with the traffic and took your chances! There were the infamous bike lanes that forced you to ride over broken glass and storm drains. They had concrete barriers about 3 inches high that made it impossible to escape the trash. They spent 3 million dollars to set them up, and a year later they spent 1 million to take them down! City planning, Oy Vey!

Maybe you should invent a street sweeper for your bicycle, so that it can sweep off the glass and cans on the bike paths, AK.

The bike lanes on the Queensboro Bridge used to be a trolley line if I'm not mistaken. The 2nd Avenue El used to run over the bridge in the center lanes.
