the first time i watched this movie i was in my living room with my mom, crying so hard i threw up and my mother wasn’t. she didn’t understand any of the message, which made me cry even more. The second and 10th times weren’t much different for me either. I’ve never seen a movie that connected with me in such a deep way. This is probably my favourite movie of all time, im super excited to see your reaction

@thepotter1641

@@johnman9386 I would say that a big part of this movie is addressing modern nihilism in the face of the barrage of information, news, options, just the vast amount of everything available and yet unattainable to everyone. It can create a sense, especially for the generations who grew up with it (not knowing or understanding the simpler, smaller world that existed before the internet) that really, what even matters at all? Who cares when there is a version of you, your mom's friend's child, that coworker, company, brand, etc... who is doing it better, has more, is better off, than you are. Since you cannot be them, why care? This is a prevailing subconscious sentiment that exists among many young adults today. Couple that with the other part of this movie, which is about generational trauma, of parents who are unable, often unwilling to understand the world in which young people grow up in today. The beginning scene in which Evelyn tells Joy she is fat, a clear insult, yet underlies a want to express care, concern, and love. And that action, regardless of the intent, causes harm and psychological trauma when that is the "love" you experience from your parents day in and day out. This of course comes from Gong Gong, Evelyn's father, who similarly could not accept her and her individuality and instead is seen throughout the movie, constantly berating and criticizing everything Evelyn does. Now why does this all matter, the movie then in it's conclusion shows an Evelyn who is able to begin changing her paradigm and is able to see Joy and talk to her freely for the first time. This is a type of fantasy that many young adults today could only hope for from their own parents. I believe the commenter experienced a sort of catharsis in vicariously experiencing a moment of healing that they could not experience with their mother. The idea that when nothing matters, things matter if you decide it matters, and that you make a choice to allow life to be experienced for what it is, the beginnings of a healing of generational trauma, a reconciliation between two parents who probably never showed affection to each other around their children, all of these compound into a movie that is deeply meaningful amidst all the chaos and absurdity of the world we live in today.

@@johnman9386 can you expound on "shallow" and "irrelevant". Very unclear without much explanation.
@johnman9386
@johnman9386 2 жыл бұрын
@lionomazinga Maybe I was a little too harsh. I like the generational trauma part Thepoter mentioned. That's the reason the ending carries some weight. And I get that this movie represents a search for meaning in a world that it feels like you can be anything (everything) but at the same time, that makes you feel like you are nothing. It's an illusion of internet, and the vast stimuli of lives of other people you are bombarded with, every day. However, I was disappointed at the philosophical answer the movie provides for the burning question: "If nothing matters what then? " The movie gives two answers to this question. 1) "When you don't understand what's going on, be kind. " After all this tension building that sentence bummed me out when I heard it in the movies. To me, this sounds like a sappy cop out. A lack of meaning doesn't create kind people. Quite the opposite, it makes monsters. People who will do anything to fill this huge hole in their chest (this bagel) when nothing can. Why be kind if nothing matters? Why not hurt people and take advantage of them to serve your own purposes if nothing matters? 2) The second answer is much more valid and it comes from the ending dialogue with the mother and daughter. Nothing matters in the grand scheme of things ,yes, but in our small little worlds the people closest to us matter, (family, close friends) and that's good enough. I thought about this movie a lot, and i rewrote my comment many times trying to find a truth here. I think my main problem is not the message itself but the delivery. Too much time was spent on meaningless action and silly gags. Too much exposition and telling, instead of showing. The whole format of this movie is in direct opposition with its message. Ultimately, the message is about i) finding meaning amongst chaos ii) the importance of family iii) the trap of imagination if left unchecked. But apart from a couple of scenes (Waymond monologue, the mother, daughter ending dialogue) the movie celebrates what it is supposedly preaching against. And that is apparent from the focus of the majority of the movie. i) It's completely chaotic and succumbs to meaningless action because it's funny and quirky. ii)It doesn't care to explore the family dynamics in depth apart from a single scene ( the lesbian girlfriend reveal scene) which acts as a mere symbol for every dynamic between almost all characters. (Grandpa-mother-daughter). iii) And its imagination runs wild, with no pause and no real human interactions, to create some depth instead of bombarding us with action. It reminds me of a superhero film that its supposedly about people coming together and defeating the evil villain but what they really need is the protagonist to unite them, show them the way, save everyone and get the girl. Meaning, the whole myth of the superhero, defeats the purpose of a collective effort because it shows that what you really need to change things is a singular godly person and some followers. This movie could have been so much better if it didn't focus so hard on having mass appeal, combining action and humor the same way a marvel movie does. If we stayed for more than a second on Evelyn's alternate lives and explore them, instead of using them solely as a gag that would be that much more interesting.

@@johnman9386 More interesting perhaps, but probably less entertaining. I don't begrudge movies for being deep, ponderous and message heavy. I also don't begrudge a movie for being mindless entertainment. They're meant for different audiences, the former aiming more to be art, the latter, simply being fine with entertainment. When a movie can blend the two, if done well, I personally find that is what really impresses me when it comes to film-making. I find Bong Joon Ho's films are a great example of this, being both message focused while still being entertaining. These are my personal thoughts though, and I can understand how people who really prefer one or the other wouldn't appreciate a film that works on both axis's.

The symbolism in the movie is excellent at conveying the message. The "Everything Bagel" representing depression and nihilism - a white dot surrounded by a black circle. A point of light surrounded by darkness. Drawing everything inwards towards despair. If viewed from the opposite/negative perspective, become a black dot surrounded by a white circle - the 'googly eyes', representing empathy and kindness. Reaching outwards with open arms embracingly to share the love. If nothing that we do matters, then the only thing that matters is what we do. Be kind. Just an amazing movie all around.

I still cry when listening to Waymond's part about being kind. This film came at such a great time with us coming back from a global pandemic where tensions are high, and the world is filled with vitriol and hatred. That message was so critical for me, to pull myself out of the cynicism and nihilism, and "dis-care". When you don't know what's going on, it really is so important to just be kind. Not just being kind to others, but especially being kind to yourself.

Then after, i had one of the coolest moments, about 7 of us, just hung out and shared our fav moments and thoughts. I was a wreck from Waymond's "kindness speech" to the end. In the end, it's super important that Joy is the one reaching out for help. Her hand coming out of the Bagel, reaching out was so powerful. And how they portrayed the mom and daughter's embrace being as powerful as planets colliding? Wow. The entire show. Just wow. They deserve all the awards. Joy, Evelyn, Waymond, the Daniels, they better get all the recognition.

it's so interesting to me that this film was initially conceptualized as a metaphor for ADHD. I live with it and Joy's character and Jobu especially represent so well the overwhelming and debilitating feeling of life. while evelynn's distractibility and 'verse jumping' (daydreaming) represent the inattentive subtype so well. This film is absolutely amazing, and the ADHD direction was cut as a focus because everyone experiences it differently and neurotypical people might conceptualize it differently than indented. But i think it's an amazing way for people to begin to grasp the differences in information processing. even the title itself fits for ADHD/autism Perceiving 'everything, everywhere, all at once' and being overstimulated (jobu) but also finding the superpower in passion and intererest that comes with that perception (evelynn)

Hmmm. I hadn't thought of the ADHD angle but now that you've put it forward I can see how it can apply. I think the good thing about this movie is that it has or can have multiple themes, and because of that ,it can resonate with many different people. You may not be able to empathize with one angle, ex acceptance of a gay child, pressure to succeed so bad you give up, never being good enough for a parent, the insane complexity of the parent child bond etc but there can be another angle that you can. Which is why so many people, LGBTQs, immigrants, people who were close to their mothers/fathers, people who were estranged from their mother/father, depressed people, married people etc can enjoy this film and see themselves in it. Not to mention sci fi fans who haven't felt taken seriously by the Oscars, and minorities. I'm so glad this was made.

@@callmeclariss you did a damn good job, every other reaction video I’ve seen pales in comparison to this. I end up getting annoyed because they talk through moments that give explanation and miss out on important dialogue smh loved everything you had to say and you paused to add some thoughtful commentary. It’s a small moment out of many that stood out in the video, but I liked your description of how the film has a surrealist / avant garde approach yet isn’t confusing like those artistic techniques. Really loved that description and those references you used to describe what you meant, most people don’t know how to fill in that void when explaining their thoughts to seeing something creative.

Holy cow, I swear every rewatch of this film, I notice something new! Literally right after Evelyn has the epiphany that in order to save her Joy, she must become like Jobu Topaki, we see her connect to the singer universe wher she has eye makeup on similar to Jobu’s during the bagel scene! This film is absolutely filled to the brim with little things like this. The cookies, the pig on the keychain and pig on the leash, raccoonie, the love of Deirdre, etc. There’s very little that’s shown in the film that’s arbitrary. The musical score even! At the start of the film looking into the mirror the music and tone is happy, then when Evelyn achieves enlightenment, that same music returns, signaling a return to peace.

The heavy makeup on Evelyn as a Chinese opera singer is the traditional makeup in Chinese opera. They took the inspiration from that for Joy's makeup instead of the other way around as you think.

Just all the feels..like everyone else. I am 50 years old (ugh 😄). I have seen hundreds of movies! It takes a lot to impress me, never mind blow my mind and weep like a child! Let's just say that I am far more Jobu Tupacki than Waymond. Yet, here I am watching reaction videos like many, I think, wondering why this movie makes me so emotional. I think at its core - it's honest. The acting is so ripped from the heart that it just hits deep. As a species, we have also been through a tense 5 or 6 years, filled with political violence and hateful rhetoric, then Covid rocking our world. This movie is fantastically original and fascinating, but ultimately about hope, love and family.❤️ 👏 👏 👏

I waited to watch your reaction until I was able to watch the movie. I felt like my mind wasn’t in the right place to appreciate it for a while. But, I just watched today and woo boy, cry laughing till I was producing snot bubbles. I was genuinely holding it together until the rocks funny enough; when the Evelyn rock started moving towards the Joy rock I just broke. It reminded me of when my aunt, who was basically my second mom, was alive; every time I was in a dark depression, she’d sneak up behind me and give me a hug. And I’d be mean and shake her off, and 5-10 minutes later she’d sneak up behind me again and give me another hug. Again and again until I just gave in and hugged her back. And I’d give anything to have her do that one more time. It’s wild how a movie that is so insane at times could also be so incredibly moving.

I've seen dozens of reactions to this film. I'm obsessed, it's my favorite film. You reacted to one part in a way that was the *opposite* of *every* other reactor... When Evelyn and her adversary lost their abilities for a moment, and the camera panned over to the trophy on the desk, every other reactor started chanting "No, no, no, NO!!!" and you yelled "YESSSSS!" I almost peed a little. I paused your video to type this, looking forward to the rest of your reaction!

I always felt like we all had the potential to be successful, famous, rich, happy. In life we are given many opportunities to be whatever we want yet those possibilities are hidden from us. We don’t get to live those lives. Maybe I could drop out from my college, make some crazy investments and I could be filthy rich. Yet we often don’t take the unbeaten path. We just keep living in our small loops. This idea of potential could spark hope for some but it saddens me, making me feel like I am missing out. “You could be anyone, anywhere” but “I choose to be here with you.” part of this movie’s message spoke to me.

This film nails everything. The writing, the characterization, the symbolism, the raising and resolving of internal/external/philosophical stakes and even the low budget CGI and effects are essential for making this film exactly as grounded as it needed to be. This film is masterclass material.

The only time I remembered watching a movie where more than 1 Actor in the same movie deserved to win the Best Actor award was ' AMADEUS'. I never imagined...3 Asians namely Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan and Stephanie Hsu completely stunned me with their unbelievably insane acting. Never before has any movie moved me the way 'Everything Everywhere All At the Same Time' did. It made me laugh...cry...ponder...be appreciative...excited...it was indeed a powerful roller coaster ride. At the end of the movie... I was left flabbergasted...I didnt know what to say. My jaw dropped...and I found myself in disbelief at what I had just watched. That moment was the most dumb founding moment in my life after watching countless Movies in my life. I have never had such a feeling after a Movie... until THIS. This Movie has changed the way Movies will made in the future. The 2 Daniels deserved to win the best Director Award too. Their original storyline in this Masterpiece is beyond belief!

This is one of my absolute favourite movies of all time, and i tried to show it to my parents...But after 20 min of the movie they simply laughed at me because they didnt understand it and thought it was the most ridicolous thing they'd seen. So i simply shut it down and they never finished the movie. It made me sad that they didn't even give it a chance and ridiculed me for having such an emotional impact to the story... I wish they'd give it a chance or open their minds. Because essentially this movie truly is about generational trauma and the relationships in family. It's ironic in my case.

I love the depth in this film: in a lesser film Alpha Waymond would be the hero but when you think about his lines that ideology is what got us in this mess & our Waymon is the real moral center of the film (I could go on for hours, great film) *Swiss army man* is weird but has so much heart so I highly recommend it
