I'm hoping it was just satire. I remember the days when kids went around stealing each other's accounts like that, Runescape actually put a "security dungeon" in the game to teach kids account security, it got so bad. The point was, kids would shamelessly steal their friends' passwords, and everyone was doing it, back when Runescape was new or fairly new. From the outside it looked like some sort of mania.

Excellent characters, adventure, and writing a world that feels magical -- I wouldn't call her a bad author by any means. ...but damn, that line in the first book about wizards not having an ounce of logic feels like lampshading looking back. Did she know her plot points wouldn't hold up, and tried to excuse it? Because if that was an intentional worldbuilding choice to cover for her weaknesses that's actually really clever. Or I'm reading too much into it, that line only existed for the purpose of the one drinking cup puzzle, and she just couldn't write a logically consistent story to save her life.
@marcog.verbruggen6743 ай бұрын
I'm portuguese and i read the books as a kid, translated. Extremely fun reads and the emotional beats she hit were so good as a growing kid/teenager, plus somehow she managed to be one of the few examples of a person with hateful ideas NOT leaking them into their writing, somehow. Later in life I grabbed the books in the original english and was pleasantly surprised at the prose as well - a lot of her style was lost in translation so my original experience was of a much dryer, standard writing style. But yeah, even when i was still making my way through the series the first time around i remember thinking "some of this stuff makes no gods damned sense" towards the end. Shame shes so compelled to retroactively make her own work worse (thank you rowling i really needed to know that wizards just shat themselves on the go until like a few decades ago or whatever). Not to mention all of the nasty shit she says just souring the whole memory for me..

Later, after vacation, i went to school and there was a teacher and i dont remember the exact context but they showed like a powerpoint presentation of a trigger fish, so i tell the teacher that its called a humuhumunukunukuapua’a, and the teacher decided, instead of looking it up to see if i was telling the truth, said that what i said was ridiculous and a lie and i shouldnt make up words even though my innocent child brain _knew for a fact that it was true._ so i did what any small immature child does and cried about being called a liar. My mom chewed out the teacher for making me cry. Also, somewhat unrelated story, my sister had a teacher that slammed a plastic pencil box on her hand in the middle of class, making her bleed and that particular teacher was fired.
