Bill Murray always plays himself in movies. He has this funny ongoing joke about him, where he’ll be places you’d never expect because he’s famous. I’m zombieland, he was HIMSELF which it why it was hilarious. In real life, he showed up to a place where construction workers were and just worked with them for no reason. He’s known for just “popping up” places. Movies too. When you watch ghostbusters, he’s so unamused by the situations because it’s literally HIM just popping up in random scenarios, in reali life, and in movies. When you watch most of his movies he has this unamused attitude. One time at a restaurant, he walked up to a woman and apparently ate her fry and said “no one will believe you.” He’s known for randomly being places.

Not being an American, I lost the original domestic reception, but the history I have read is as follows: it was fairly succesful with the main target public, children, and it revitalized the Loony Tunes before theneyes of a generation more familiar with the Tiny Toonies even if it was not the hit the partnership of Jordan and Bugs would make one think it could be. However, as the '90s gave way to the 2000s, said children became cynical teenagers and young adults, and the whole social climate changed, too. The people who had the most reason to remember the movie fondly started to see it for the exercise in commercialism and opportunism it (in part) was. More recently, the nostalgia for the sweet '90s of their childhood and early adolescence (i.e. the yearning for a simpler and arguably less awful time) did its work, and Space Jam started to be seen as an enjoyable artificial of its time. Probably not iconic enough to deserve a sequel or something like, but good fun nevertheless.

What matters is context. The Loony Toons were super popular when Space Jam came out, so everyone was excited to go on adventure with them and America's most famous athlete at the time. Not to mention all the cool 90's music. Space jam 2 feels solely like a cash grab, even if the 1st one was too. But it was also new and exciting within the context of the 90's.

People seem to forget that NBA players in movies were actually a big thing in the 90s and that space jam was originally based on a commercial with bugs and MJ made years prior so there was already hype around the looney tunes and NBA collab. What is SJ2 playing off of? Just nostalgia of the first and nothing more. Sequels are historically worse than the original with a few exceptions and SJ2 isn't one of them.

The reason the first Space Jam is beloved, despite its countless flaws, IMO, is that it came out at the perfect time, right at the height of the NBA and MJ's popularity with him coming back from retirement and having the best NBA season of all time, at a time when even uninterested sports fans loved to watch MJ, Shaq, Barkley and countless other players dominate. Space Jam 2 has LeBron past his prime, after his worst playoff run in his career, in an era with millions of disillusioned basketball fans. I don't think there will be any sense of nostalgia for Space Jam 2 twenty years from now.

Nneka Ogwumike and Diana Taurasi are AWESOME, but we didn't even get to see their personalities.
