In the early days of CGI there was probably a lot of excitement because of how new it was. And CGI ages terribly regardless of time period because technology is constantly improving, so it really doesn't matter in the long run how "good" it is so much as the creativity behind it. Even a CGI movie made today will probably look bad 10 or substandard years from now. SBandLG might have looked good for the time because there was little competition with CGI and people didn't know any different. Or the emphasis was not on how good the technology looked but the wacky ways in which it was used.

Fun fact: Troublemaker Studios was made so Rodriguez could make movies for his son. Shark Boy and Lava Girl was actually one of his son's dreams that he wanted to bring to life (I believe Spy Kids was too, but this was so long ago I can't remember fully). Am I the only one who actually likes the “bad” CGI? Like I find some of the visuals (not all) actually pretty or cool looking.
