I need to make a video on waking up early when you’re a NIGHT OWL! I’ve seen so many of these vids and 90% of them start off with “I love the morning!” “I’m a morning person!” Just once I wanna hear someone say “I HATE mornings and naturally perk up at 8p but I figured this out”. 😂😂😂 Who’s with me??

I think the first thing to remember is, no matter what time you decided you were going to wake up, whether it's 5am. or 8am., actually _get_ _up_ at that time. Especially if you've set an alarm for yourself, don't snooze it and go back to bed. I remember Evan Carmichael saying that if you tell yourself you're going to wake up at a certain time and then when that time comes, you decide no to, the first thing you've done that day is to tell yourself it's okay to not keep your commitments or something like that, which sets you up for failure for the rest of the day.

Waking up early is hard for me because of the side effects to medications I need to take to keep me alive. Each time you make a video about waking up early I watch it at least 3 times. Once to take it in, again to take notes, and one last time to make sure I took away as much as I could. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and wisdom. The past few weeks I find myself waking up no later than 6am, which for me is HUGE. I can wake up and take lemon water, do my skincare self care, and take my time to do my makeup so I can roll into work lookin like a snack. Thanks Amy!! Xo

This is really great Amy! I'm into this conversation. Thank you for bringing this up. You know what I do for my morning alarm. Alarms just don't work for me in the morning. The monster that's in charge of my morning sleep and my alarm is not fooled no matter what I do. So... I have a different strategy. (This is my first time listening to you so if you touched on this before in prior videos I didn't see them.) What I do is set my alarm for 6:15, but I want to get up at 5 am naturally. IF I don't have trouble falling asleep and IF I don't have trouble sleeping then for some crazy reason I'll wake up at 5:00 AM! Now, my first thought is about how getting that extra hour will be like a GIFT. Seriously. I'll wake up. It's dark. I look at the clock and YES, It's 5AM. SCORE! An extra hour. I see that as a present for ME! WooHoo! FTW! I'm a kid in a candy store! My second thought is "the quicker I get up, the more I get of this extra hour. For some reason days like this are wonder, aren't they!

I started getting up early, 6, so I could watch tv and do other lazy things for 1-3 hours and it still not being lunch time and the day half gone. This started when I was unemployed looking for a job. Then I got a ”when needed” job and it was awsome that I could get a call around 8 o clock asking if I could work today and allready had had my breakfast and gotten ready. And when I got a work schedule a early start didnt feel as much of a pain as it would have if I was still getting up around 9. Getting to bed on time matters, prefereably no later than ten at night. If I get to bed at nine I’m happy. Settting the coffeee machine truly really helps as my coffee is done at 6.00 and it will get cold and burnt if I don’t get up. Thanks for the motivitation to keep getting up early and to do something productive with it.

Hi Amy, great subject! My biggest challenge is my 3 year old son who is the cutest kid in the world but has sensory issues and his brain doesn’t really signal bedtime for him. So we basically made it our full time job to help him understand bedtime by setting up visual cues and giving him about an hour before we start the game of laying down and him jumping back up again. So dimming lights, the nighttime habits (no technology) definitely works. It doesn’t mean it’s a perfect system. We’ve been doing this 2 solid years and he still struggles with bedtime but the routine really helps make it less stressful and more likely to be successful for him and for us. So, yes, you are right on all points about the process of it. My son loves the 5am wake up and I’m pretty much used to it at this point. While most parents get to start their day before their kids mine just adores the super early wake up and I don’t want to discourage it. He naps and I get my me time then.

Amy, if your phone is in another room, what wakes you up? Do you use an alarm clock? Can you still hear your phone? I use my phone as an alarm clock, so I'm afraid if I put it too far out of the bedroom, then I won't hear it to wake up. If I use just a basic alarm, I will turn it off in my sleep. Not sure what to do. Thanks for all the good advice!

You might have legit insomnia. I have the EXACT same problem, and was diagnosed with insomnia. Talk to your doctor about getting a sleep study done. Your internal clock is messed up and you might need a professional to help you with your sleep.
@alexreith48775 жыл бұрын
I struggle with the same issue. Things that have helped me are taking a Vitamin D supplement, and occasionally if I feel like sleep is going to be a problem taking a low dose (.5 mg) of melatonin about 30 mins before I want to be asleep. I have read that research has shown that melatonin is most effective at doses much lower than what people usually take, and taking more, or too often can have the opposite effect. I also set myself an alarm to remind me to do my bedtime routine 2 hours before I actually need to be asleep, and then Once I'm done I finish out my day by reading in bed, but also give myself a cutoff time for that too. Mostly I think it's having a set routine that helps, but I'm definitely still working on it and it's still challenging, and sometimes insomnia just hits, at which point I generally don't allow myself to "nap" the following day, but do go to bed a few hours early so I can try to get myself back on a good cycle.

My biggest obstacle with 5am is actually the 9pm. I need a huge amount of self control to put myself to bed BEFORE 9 so by 9 I'm asleep. That means I have to start the winding down process before I'm even sleepy and I'm watching Netflix or browsing the net, or working on my project (which last one is the reason why I wake up at 5 to begin with). That's difficult, I feel like I'm forever working on that and haven't found the best solution yet apart from sheer willpower, which obviously doesn't always work. But you were right about the feeling of "getting something done from your to-do list before the sun comes up". It feels amazing. I work full time and by 7.30 I'm in the office, and it feels amazing not just that I'm the first in the office and I have a quiet hour to work there too, but also I already got my time with my own project before the rest of the world starts crawling out of bed. :) It kinda smoothes the rest of the day out, I'm 50% calmer, like doesn't matter what happens later I already did the one that was the most important to me. I can clearly notice the difference between the days when I get it done and when I don't because I went to bed at 10pm instead of 9, or the worst when I go to bed on time but can't fall asleep for an hour and I would much rather get 8 hours of sleep (so I can be productive throughout the day instead of being sleepy for a whole day) than my 5am wake up and I hate it. Hence the 9pm obstacle. It has a snowball effect.

I love this so much !!! For me the hardest part of getting up isn’t getting out of bed it’s mentally waking up. I’ll roll out of bed and have a shower or a coffee but then I sit down and just feel exhausted and like I need to roll back into bed. Feeling like I can’t keep my eyes open is a struggle when you’re trying to get work done! I think it’s just my body clock, I’m sure if I did it more often it wouldn’t be an issue but at the moment that is my biggest struggle.

I am just as you describe yourself, Amy. My biggest problem is getting to bed on time. What used to be my biggest problem was turning off my alarms, in a way which I could hardly control. Better than putting your alarm clock in another room (because the distance and walls can minimize the sound of the alarm) is to keep the alarm in your room but have it set to turn off only with scanning a QR code... Which you place in another room. Sleep for Android allows you to do this. Also, the bedtime notifications are also available with Droids. My Pixel 3 puts a grey scale on my entire phone screen when it's time for me to get ready for bed. Amazing setting that is hard to ignore!!

I've been working on it!! I'm not a morning person either but it's truly satisfying when you wake up early and get stuff done. I feel your exact sentiments in tip #6!!! Telling the whole world 🙌🏼 LOL Only obstacle I have is my 14 month old waking up within the hour of me waking up at 5am. It's like she senses I'm up lol. She goes to bed at a good time (8/8:30p) and usually would sleep in if I slept in (7/8a). That's something I'm working on at the moment, the whole reason I wanted to wake up early so I would have a couple of hours to myself and start the day off right lol And question: how do you even hear your phone if it's in another room? I'm so curious about that lol because that's awesome, you have great ears!!

Been trying to do this for years, glad I discovered ur videos. Always liked the “alarm far away” idea but it kinda stuffed up when I had children. 1) so tired & now capable of sleeping thru anything so only really loud alarms wake me up (& I can still go back to sleep) 2) afraid to put alarm out of my room in case it wakes the kids too early - but seriously an hour or two for myself before they wake would be heaven & sets the day up nicely. Any ideas?

I wake up at 8:30am, while 5am isnt really necessary for me, 7am is my goal :) I'm naturally a lot more creative and alert in the evening, and I always do my best work later in the day. But I do really love waking up earlier and having a relaxing morning as well.

Love this, need the tips (I'm SO BAD at getting up on time, let alone early), but also your hair is distractingly awesome in this video

I used to be able to wake up early but it's been a struggle lately. Last night I even went to bed at 9 pm and could not wake up until 6:30 (a 1 1/2) after when I wanted to get up. I feel like I am combating my body. It's like I'm tired but then I am noticing at night, I seem to be really productive. So maybe I'm more of a night person? I've tried all the tricks and nothing seems to work. This video, though, was inspiring and I hope to apply some of the ideas into my routine. Thank you!

I wish you had young children living with you. I start to get into your message then remember that you don't have little humans demanding your attention pretty much all day and you become hard for me to relate to. I still like your videos and take what I can from them. Thanks for creating!

I used to be an early person no need to even use an alarm clock. Then bam I turned 51 and menopause! I fall asleep and 2 hours later I'm awake again and feel like I have anxiety and can't sleep for an hour or so then finally exhausted back to sleep and alarm clock goes off and I feel terrible without much sleep. I've been working on taking magnesium, holy basil, teas, malatonin, essential oils and diffuser, yoga and meditation. It's been helping, but it's not fixed at a 100percent yet. Thanks for your suggestions.

My main problem is I like snuggling my cats more than I like getting up.

Given what you do, do you allow yourself a “day off”? I feel like you never completely take off, but what does that “day off” look like for you? Trying to find the balance of rest and productivity on weekends.

Hardest part of waking up early is just getting up. Once I’m up..the momentum carries. Huge fan of the 5second rule!

I wish it made sense for me to do things early in the morning, but I'm a musician which means 1. late rehearsals (till 9:30, can't fall asleep right after) and 2. the thing I would do if I were to wake up early and get things done is practice...and I play the trumpet (neighbors and spouse to consider). But this is fine because I love the life I'm living. I like early morning me time when I can get it.

PS - your video on meditation convinced me to get Headspace, and I have never in my life found it so easy to fall asleep at night. I meditate when I get home from work, and something about doing that at any point of the day helps my body fall asleep so much more easily when it's time. So THANK YOU for that!
