Ad Astra means simply “to the stars”. The full saying is “Per aspera ad astra”- through adversity, to the stars-a famous saying of Roman philosopher Seneca. I’m guessing the studio refused to allow the full quote for the movie title so they settled on the second half. As a classics/sci fi nerd though the invocation is obvious and the title alone makes me wanna go see it. Looks right up my alley.

This movie was disappointing, despite a great job by Brad Pitt. The story felt overly narrated. It could have been a good military, or cowboy, or SciFi, or character piece. Instead, it tried all of the above at the expense of sub-plot development. I felt pushed into filling in the holes. In the end, I was less willing to suspend disbelief for everything else.

An anime called Kanata no Astra just ended its run with 12 episodes and that´s why I know what "Astra" means. The ship (because, yes, the story develops out in space) has this phrase displayed: "Ad Astra, Per Aspera", Latin for "To the stars, through difficulties". It´s a space mystery as well, but with a larger / younger cast. Pretty good, if I may say.
