You should fill empty jars with filtered water because when stored properly, it will last indefinitely. This could also be good in case of emergency, if power cuts out and your water supply is cut you can have drinking water or for any animals you have. And whenever you need to use the jars, you can just pour the water into your garden and there’s no waste. I think it’s a good method!

If you freeze-dry the leftover skin, seeds, pulp from putting the tomatoes through the food mill. Then powder it in a blender. It makes a great home made powdered tomato puree. While using all of the tomato!

I'm actually blending up my dehydrated tomatoe skins into powder right now! I had 3 quarts of dehydrated skins that I vacuum sealed, but, I'm getting low on quart jars so I wanted to free those up, I'll end up with a half pint of powder, that I'll vacuum seal with an oxygen absorber. I just started doing this this year. Wish I'd known about it sooner. I used to compost all the skins. Not anymore!

Girl...I would fill those empty jars with sterile water. If you need the jars for canning, you can always use the water in your recipe or to clean your product with. Nothing goes to waste at our house. If your power goes out at least you would have water to drink and cook with. If not, then at least flip them over to keep clean. Your pantry is beautiful!!! Very clean, tidy, well thought out and put together. ❤

Living without a grocery store used to look just like this; I feel it may return out of necessity. I pray families learn from one another. As we need to take care of ourselves like this again; when other sources cannot be found or trusted. I Imagine the health benefits and lessons learned; balance out the work and gratitude arises. Or should for oneself and others. We co op with neighbors and barter a lot too. Really makes a difference tho nothing as massive as you. Thanks 4 sharing.

Yes! I'm currently trying to restock it! I can fit 3 free range chickens (they are on the smaller side) in my big roaster at a time. Then I shred them and separate the broth to can separately. Its really a labor of love because I often slow cook them on low for 12+ hours along with carrots, onions & celery. But it sooooo delicious! Nothing like store canned chicken.

Hi. I live in the UK where the only thing we can is a water bath canning for Jams, we are very lucky here as our stores do not allow lots of artificial colours or preservatives. I was very surprised when I visited the USA of how many chemicals and preservatives that was allowed. Your storage space is really great, we do not tend to have basements here so storage does tend to be our biggest issue, your cellar is amazing

Glass jars won't hold up in an earthquake or bombing scenario sitting on the shelf like that. Might want to secure them with bubble wrap or foam padding and then put in boxes to help protect as much as possible. Also putting a board along the shelves would help prevent them from falling off the shelves in that scenario as well. Or you can lose everything you worked so hard to prepare for.

I made a sheet and laminated it for in my house because my deep freeze is in the garage outside. So it has lines of what the product is, then when I put it in the freezer, expiry, then I made 12 circles numbered 1-12 for quanitity, and I just colour in the dot of how many of each thing I have. As far as tomato paste goes, I've thought about going through the cooking down process and canning it, but with my freeze dryer, it's such a snap. Blend tomatoes (cooked or not, your choice), freeze dry, powder. Then when I want tomato paste, All I do is take a bit of powder and mix a tiny bit of water in until it reaches the right consistency! Easy! And you only need to mix up however much you need. Thanks for the tour! What an awesome space! Do you find that the freeze dryer heats up the room? Or does it stay cool enough?

Great idea to can one thing every other year! I do that sometimes too. I’d love a video on how you do the home canned pumpkin. I did some last year as a pumpkin pie mix, with the sugar and spices already in it, so I just have to add milk and eggs. I made a pumpkin pie yesterday from it and it turned out great! My husband won’t eat it, however, because it’s not a USDA approved thing to can. I did pressure can it in pints for 65 minutes, so I think it’s fine, especially with the sugar in it. You must never get mice in your cellar? One tip, you might want to store a variety of foods in each freezer in case one goes out, you don’t lose the whole freezer full of beef, or whatever.

I’m very interested in finding your video on canning lemon juice as we’ve been driving to the docks near Philly to buy cases of lemons and freezing the juice. It would be great to not take up so much freezer space with lemon juice also possibly sourcing some products from your/our local farmers. Einkorn is the best! I make einkorn sourdough bread, and everything else Einkorn too. It’s the original wheat from the times of Adam and Eve, it’s never beef hybridized. I use to sell my einkorn bread to a certified GAPS instructor who sold it to her GAPS clients, all with gluten intolerance, and they loved it. Sadly she moved across the country, so I no longer have that small gig anymore. Adeline you should try it, it’s so healthy.

It’s just in your largest pot- must put a towel on the bottom of the pan to keep the jars from breaking. Fill jars Bring to a boil and abt 20 minutes after boiling also use teas salt and tablespoon vinegar for preservatives most veggies meat id pressure can or be sure to cook longer when you eat it. Excellent set up more people should have their homes set up like this. One thing I would Additionally add, would be a chambered vacuum sealer. You have an external vacuum sealer, which is pretty good and significantly cheaper to buy then a chambered vacuum sealer. However, the chamber vacuum sealer has advantages 1. the bags for a chamber vacuum sealer are significantly cheaper, than the food saver external bags. One chambered vacuum bag would cost you around $.3 to $.4 cents as wear the same size bag from food saver would be $.40-$.50 per bag. Depending on how much you’re using it, that can be a significant savings.. 2. the chambered vaccine will remove more of the air better airtight seal. 3. You can control the amount of air that is removed and the seal time so you can seal more delicate items without breaking them like cakes and cookies. 4. Can you put mason jars inside and get a seal or even a reseal? Perfectly ideal for drygoods. 5. Capable of sealing liquids. I love this feature as I will vacuum seal, stews, soups, casserole & chili.. this is the biggest way to save space in a freezer or even refrigerator. As you can lay things flat and don’t have to have containers to hold the liquids. But what I love the most is, I can make a meal one day make more than I need in a soup or a stew, seal it in several bags put it in the freezer, take it out later, put it into a pot of boiling water, heat it up open with a scissors pour into the bowl and eat Very little washing up to do later. I also do this when I go camping you have a great meals that you can cook up in minutes. 6. A chambered vacuum sealer is also great for marinating. Where you might marinade, something overnight or for a day or two the process is sped up if you have used a chamber vacuum sealer. You can soak meat in a marinade bath for hours, but it will mostly only marinade the surface of the meat however, by vacuum sealing, it’s literally sucks that marinade into the meat. I also use this process to dry cure and make my own bacon. And not just the streaky rashers north Americans eat. I also make Irish back bacon and take whole pork, picnic roast and turn it into a shoulder of bacon, which is amazing . imagine pulled pork but bacon flavor. Simple, Irish dish, bacon and cabbage three ingredients and you’ll have one of the best meals of your life. Cook up the entire shoulder of bacon when cooked remove from water allowed to cool so you can pull off all of the fat and bone and be left with all that delicious bacon. Shred a head of cabbage, throw it into all of that salty fatty bacon water and cook it up. The cabbage will absorb all of that flavor making it the greatest cabbage of your life. Serve with potatoes and life is good. 7. People are concerned that you can only free some thing that will fit in the vacuum sealer. However, like the external vacuum sealer, if you’re using food safe bags, you could fix some thing like a whole salmon and seal it. chamber vacuum sealer are also a capable of vacuum, sealing things, externally. You were just placed the top of the bag inside the vacuum sealer and close the lid. It will then suck all of the air out and then seal it. 8. there are probably things I have not thought of you could use it for, but I also take documents that are important, and that I don’t need on a regular basis a vacuum seal them in order to protect them if the pipe ever bust, and the house flooded. Important paperwork would be OK. My apologies for the extremely long comment, but even though the chamber vacuum sealer is expensive, I think it’s well worth every household having so to explain all of the benefits of it required me to ramble on .

@@carollynt are not just any plastic bags The bags are designed to be food safe. Actually this is a type of cooking some chef use as it is the greatest way to cook meat poultry and fish. It is called sous vide. Sous vide is a cooking technique that involves vacuum sealed food in a bag and cooking it in a precisely regulated water bath. This low temperature, long time cooking method, produces results that are impossible to achieve through any other cooking method. Now that's if you want to be all chef like an amazing. But I also find it perfectly fine for reheating up food that I've stored in the freezer without having lots of dishes for clean up.

Been canning for 45 years now. And I use to use one of those machines that you crank and the juice goes one way and all the rest goes another. But i hated all the waste. So now i just put my tomatoes in my roaster. Then i put the whole tomatoes, skin, seeds minus the core. And i vitamix it all. No waste. Then i make whatever i was going to use the tomato sauce for. Then can it.

I love the tape on the freezer idea. Great way to know exactly what's in there without having to open it up. And i've never heard of deer hot dogs before that sounds delicious. By the way new subscriber here.😊 Wow I did not know that about the avocados either thank you.

Beautiful cellar! My food storage looks so puny by comparison, but I can only imagine the hours of hard work that went into yours. I am interested in seeing what you do with the freeze dryer. Here in Arizona, canning is the last thing I want to do when it’s hot. I have wondered if I would get enough use from a freeze dryer to make it worth the cost.

Scrapple, real scrapple, is awesome. I love it. I get mine from an Amish market but eventually I'm going to make my own. I would need a shelf just for salsa, chili, peppers, and onions.

Hi Adaline! Your pantry looks great and well stocked! Just wanted to offer a tip that might save you some time. I noticed there are several empty jars sitting on the shelves. What I do is wash the jars in the dishwasher and when I take them out I put a new lid and a ring on them and put them in storage. By doing this, I always have clean jars ready for the next canning job!

Just a suggestion: put a 2 or 3 inch lip on the front and back side of your pantry shelves just in case the ground ever shakes. You'd hate to see all your canning effort land on the floor. Your food storage looks so lovely.

Painter's tape labels is what I've been using for YEARS. Learned it from living in collective housing, where we're buying in bulk for 6+ ppl and need to keep organized. You think it's hard keeping organized with a family? Try a family-sized group of adults, who are all lending a hand individually in the food preservation and storage.

Now that is an organized pantry! BRAVO! I love those Gamma Seal lids for the "paint buckets", been using them since they came to market. Paid plenty for the lids but buckets were free from several restaurants. We make our tomato paste by boiling it down and then before it becomes a paste it is placed on cookie sheets and then covered with a screen and placed out in the hot August sun to finish drying. Very potent, a little dab l' do ya! I would try canning low acid/sugar foods but where we live now, there is nowhere where they can verify the lid for accuracy of the pressure gauge, so that stuff goes into the freezer.

nice...you have done a very good job. i can appreciate a woman like you. a true family woman. you should get your old man to adjust your wooden shelving. you can probably get at least 2 more shelves in each section as there is alot of unused air space between shelves. awesome job.

This is awesome! I wish I had the space for that amount of canned foods. One suggestion is that when you have empty jars to store them upside down so that they stay clean and nothing (like dust, bugs or rodents) can fall into them. Then you don't have to go through a whole 2nd thorough cleaning on them.

I am not a canner per se, although I do have a few dozen home canned jars of jams and home grown veggies. I was watching these videos with a lot of skepticism, regarding the nutritional value of this food. Then I went and researched it all. Was amazed to find that the majority of nutrients remain intact during the process of canning! Granted, you still need the odd Vit C supplement and of course, fresh stuff during season , but otherwise, this is still a very healthy storage. Well done!

Carrots...try dry packing when you can them. They won't be soggy and weird tasting. Basically you just don't add water. I no longer add water for any veggie canning now. Such a huge flavor and texture difference.

we can use the electric oven to make preserves, the advantage of no additional investment, other by sabez you that we can sterilize rice enrille all dry including paste and store for 20 years minimum, fill with flour or other dry, you must put in the jar in an oven to be heated to 100 degrees same temperature as the sterilization 90 minutes the jars must be heated without a lid, put them after sterilization do as for jam place on the lid covered with a cloth leave to cool, the lids must be sterilized I put it in a pan in the oven with the jars and remove the lids after ten minutes.

Beautiful pantry but the open foods in the totes are very inviting for mice to get into a ruin. We keep all of our loose foods in sealed totes or food grade buckets. Reminds me of our own pantry.

Just a little tip, all that cleaning stuff and lighters shouldn't be so close to the water heater...I volunteered for the fire dept. and a lot of fires are because things are too close to the water heater. So my advice is to move it to another area ...and if your running the freeze dryer that close to the water heater I wouldn't its not really safe,,,,not trying to rag on you just trying to keep your family safe
