Adam Deen, a prominent Muslim intellectual and founder and director of the Deen Institute, counters Anne-Marie Waters by arguing that "if we approach Islamic teaching fairly and objectively, there is a golden thread that runs through whole Qur'an," an ideal of "justice" and "positive peace".
He argues that in fact the whole of Islam is compatible with "just war theory", in which "the virtue of avoiding violence is superseded by the virtue of justice." He then quotes from the Qur'an which states: "Fight in God's cause but do not overstep the limits. God does not love those who overstep the limits."

I disagree. Adam's argument was that Islam may focus on self-discipline and avoidance of war, but he failed to rebut the opposition's argument that the religion intrinsically & explicitly treats non-muslims like crap, and its laws are very gender biased. Adam Deen said to ignore the bad places such as Saudi, but Anne-Marie was very right in that Saudi is NOT the extreme fringe of Islam, but the centre of it. Adam failed to rebut the gender mistreatment and instead focused on the Islam preaching and practice of war & Muhammad's treatment of certain prisoners of war. He failed to cover his ass regarding the use of sex slaves of women of captured cities. In other words, Adam ignored the real world problems of Islam and only cherry picked the main messages of Islam to show that it has a peaceful message. He was totally cherry-picking scriptures/stories from the Quran, and failed to address poor human rights record found in Muslim countries today. Instead of addressing the opposition's arguments, he decided to preach about Islam to the audiences. He did a good job at preaching, but not at debating.

Yes, so it does have things that talk about violence,like being sent into hell, yes, but the real Muslims HAVE to keep tolerance with other religions. I have muslims near me, they are always so nice to approach, they always say peace be on you when ever I meet them, and they are constantly giving charity. People are cherry picking those verses that may refer to violence, and they explain it in a way the Quran doesn’t mean to explain. Other religions have the punishment of hell threat as well for rejecting faith, not just us.

@@dex7145 Most religions threaten the consequence of hell but Islam preaches violence against women, homosexuals and non believers. the Quran has at least 109 verses about war against non believers on the basis of their non muslim status. these include commands to cut off the heads and fingers of infidels and kill them and call muslims who do not join the fight "hypocrites". This is the teaching of islam and its not the opposition who were wrongly interpreting the teachings of the quran it was the proposition who were knowingly ignoring the true teachings of Islam.

The main problem is those people who said islam is good for human being. Either they didnt read quran or hadis fully or they live in rich country where they live as minority. That's based on your interpretation, which is the problem with any religion. But let's face facts, the Koran encourages the killing of apostates and blasphemers. So it is not about fighting what peaceful people would think of as injustice. Never in the history of the world has religion used that interpretation of Jihad. This is a far more coherent argument than the first one for this side was. Whether or not the man is correct about the "essence" of Islam being peaceful, I would like wish him success in spreading this view among believers. But rather, this is where the problem is with this proposition: the essentialist claim that it is peaceful distorts the realities of what "peaceful" means and/or of what Islam is and has been, since if someone accepts this claim and sees things in Islam that should not be viewed as peaceful, they might adjust their views of what "peaceful" means so that "peaceful" is no longer "peaceful". Better to acknowledge that the religion is ancient and massive and contains contradicting values, and picking which values to accept and which to reject. Although, I am speaking from my position as an atheist, of course. This method is quite a bit more difficult as an actual believer, I suppose. But hopefully it is still a view that can be accepted as valid and appreciated even by theists who do wish to claim that this is "the essence" of the religion. Cheers.

While I agree that it would be best for our society, picking what "is" and what "isn't" is exactly what invalidates a religion. For if the Holy book was written by God it must be taken as the truth and whatever is altered by humans later on can not replace the "word of God" since a human is not above God. No, he clearly provides evidence from the Quran, Hadith, and basic logic that shows how Muslims are supposed to act. "Share food with prisoners" not stale bread and water. That alone should be enough to show the true character of Islam. Why would they do that if they were evil? But i suspect, given the limited time, he was approaching it in the narrow context of the debate at hand and islam’s historical inception. I love how this man argues that the Qur'an is not passive, and thank God for that. It fully acknowledges that turning a blind eye to injust conflict, and the oppressed is immoral. Have Islamic countries have made up the "death for apostasy" law on their own and are misrepresenting Qur'an? The words SLAVE, KILL, BOOTY, WAR, SLAUGHTER, etc... are written many times. In Islam there is only one opinion, Sharia tells you what to eat, how to dress, what to do, what not to do, how to think.
