Adam Penning Talks RIGS! (and reveals his biggest edge) | Carp Fishing 2020
In this episode, Adam delves into some edges which he guarantees has put more fish on the bank for him. From rig mechanics to one of Penners' biggest edges: hook sharpening (where he reveals in detail exactly how he does it), this one hour-plus length film has it all - and more.

Have you tried putting sweat bands on the spool to moisten the line before even arriving at the lake. Soak some sweat bands in water, 24 hours before your trip put them over the spool , leaving them soaking the line and giving up a lot smoother line when you arrive on the bank 👍

Would you also run some water over the spool then put the soaked sweatband over spool before setting off to go fishing? Never even thought about this before, just cut up sweatband and will give it a try.

@@sibenchley6494 that's exactly what I do mate. Run it under the tap (warm water) , drench a sweat band in warm water, put it on spool and then leave overnight. Works great with gr60 and even with my braid too! Found it sinks quickly as soon as I've cast out

Well Adam what can i say. I sharpened a hook like this 1 year ago. I did not use thst rig until my last session. It caught me my PB of 46.12lb and several other 30lb carp in what was to be the best session of my entire life. The hook actually stayed sharp for the whole session and is still razor sharp now. Unbelievable.

Can't disagree with a single word Adam Penning says about line. Straight to the point; no need for bells and whistles. Always amazes me to come across blokes sitting proudly behind rods and reels that cost almost as much as a bloody Ferrari... with the reels spooled with line that's clearly old and/or plain crap

This any good for bringing back hooks after a session for a second go? Don’t see the point in sharpening for the sake of sharpening, but if I ccan justify the cost of hook sharpening kit for the money I’d save on hooks by getting 2 gose out of them it might be worth it.

Serious question, does the knot between the fluoro leader and mainline leave a fish trailing the tubing in the event of your line snapping? Is that a problem or does it not really matter?

I'm a outdoors man aswell as a fishermen and every knife I buy its sharpened sometimes with only a ceramic stone and then pastes and leather, then it can become what a knife should be,depending on the blade material you can stroke a hair off your head across the blade and it will cut it,try it if you think your knifes sharp

Started fishing in 1946 at 6 years old and learnt that when you used hooks with barbs it was nigh impossible to get the hook out without damage to the fishes mouth after all that was the idea to stop it pulling out Istopped getting barbed hooks about 30 years ago they go in much easier and anyone who is a decent enough angler shouldnt lose to many fish just keep the line tight

Hook points snapping off after sharpening... Yes it happens, it all depends on what material the hooks are made from and how they are tempered, please don't tell anyone they are talking B/S if they tell you they have seen it happen, it is the simplest part of metallurgy, also, don't go mad with pressure when you start with the file, those files bend under pressure and cause a massive flat or divot where you don't want it, try changing to a set of small sharpening stones if you are struggling to get the shape right and always finish with a wet fine stone, either oiled or watered to get that final polish (unless you want to go ultra and use a leather strop for a mirror finish)

With a curved hook I have used this session I seem to have lost a few fish and all I can put it down to is the hook hold. Yes it's curved and acts like a corkscrew but that's only the side of the curve. So if the curve is left of the hook is left then it only offers good hook hold to the left of the mouth where the curve is facing but if the carp sucks it from the right side of his mouth, yes on a swivel so it turns freely but if the curve of the hook is in one direction then the hook hold is only going to be good in the side of the curve not the opposite as it would course movement?

I'd love to know Adam's thoughts on the safety of dropping the lead on leadcore with a safety bead. I've always thought the lead should remain in order to aid the rig to move up to the bead and dislodge it so the rig is able to come free from the leader and mainline. With no lead I feel like it's more difficult for the rig to free itself from the leader.
