My high school principal's husband, Ray Easterling, killed himself because of brain damage caused by football injuries. His breaking point was when he was out running errands one day and forgot how to get home. After several hours, he realized he was lost, and had to call his wife to come pick him up. When he died, he had his body donated to further research into brain damage caused by repeated head trauma.

So ... the reality of what playing football does to the body is quickly becoming common knowledge, I hope. So at what point are people going to go into the field (pun intended) knowing full well the risks? There's a lot of dangerous jobs with known hazards and serious long-term effects on the body, but they're still available occupations because people weigh the pros and cons and go for it anyway. However, that's usually a job that's vital and needs doing despite the danger, like joining the military, fighting fires, disposing of chemical waste and such. How likely is it that people are going to keep risking brain injury for the sake of entertainment? I have some idea of how entrenched football is in American culture, but is it THAT entrenched that anyone's going to say 'So what if I die of a slow, miserable slide into dementia and depression and forgot everything? People like to watch me get hurt!"

People will play in the NFL as long as they get paid as much as they do. But for even those who are not in the NFL but are in smaller leagues they just love the game. It would take years for that to go away. Also not every player has these symptoms so some will play the odds that they will be alright. I mean boxing and MMA are still a thing and that's pretty obvious that it's not good for you. But ultimately I don't think you understand how entrenched sports are in America and king of all is football. Especially in the south and midwest. Regular season football games out draw NBA playoff games and even game 7 of the world series. Not to mention that the Super Bowl had over 100 million people watching it and game 7 of the NBA finals had about 30-40 million.

In all reality, the sport is still a major plus. A lot of players come from less than fortunate backgrounds and wouldn't have been able to afford college if it weren't for football scholarships. The ability to go to school in exchange for playing football benefits a lot of people, even if they don't go pro. It allows them to obtain a degree, which can help their future if they are smart enough when choosing their program of study. Without college football, what would they do? Many would end up getting minimum wage jobs or no job at all. So before you knock the entire sport, do some deeper thinking. Think of the entire consequences if this sport were to be stopped, rather than just the outcomes that are positive.

I think rugby is safer because the players don't wear helmets. Studies have actually shown that there are fewer brain injuries in rugby. You're not going to risk hurting yourself as badly if you don't wear protection. All a helmet does is give you a false sense of security against brain injuries.

The problem with this video is that it doesn't go far enough. CTE is also linked to increased aggression and violence. It isn't just suicide...it's likely homicide. But no one talks about that, because that makes it a public health crisis...and possibly something worth illegalizing. It's one thing for people to know the risks to their own body and mental health, but when it can affect others, it's no longer their choice to make. It's time to have a serious conversation about the legality of contact sports and what it means to public health...not just personal health.

Has to do with the fact that unlike boxing, Football is every week, which is not enough time for the brain to recover from trauma, while boxing is alternated between different players that usually play again months later, giving months time for the brain to heal.

mma and boxing are very straight foward with their imminent risks to the people partaking. It's no taboo and nobody is trying to hide the facts to cover their ass (unlike football). And because they regulate acknowledging the risks, usually after a fight where you took significant hits to the head, you get "suspended" for months in order to recover and heal. In football you go to practice the next day and continue getting hit and then onto another game a couple days later. And surprinsingly, MMA is the safest of them all, since the fact that fighters don't wear helmets and gloves are small works as a limiter of conscious force applied to strikes. In boxing the big gloves work the same as helmets in football. They serve the purpose of protecting the structural integrity of head and fist coliding, but in exchange they help increase (in many small ways) the total kinetic energy trasmited from one body to another (ergo more brain shacking). Small gloves do less structural protection (more cuts and superficial damage) but reduce the total energy transmited to the brain. Also, since they don't protect the hand as well, fighters are a bit more aware of the risk of injuring their hands (common) if they punch too hard, so the force is better regulated. It's like football and rugby. Rugby players have intrinsic safer tackling techniques because they have no protection to "keep them safe" and in the end this resuls in healthier players overall, but in football since everybody wears armor, you go hard almost all the time without immediate repercusions, but then the long term consecuenses start to appear.

Well really if you can increase the impact time of a collision to the head it will help reduce the impact. Also by using different materials you can have a helmet that absorbs some of the impact.

Why is this s national discussion? Playing football is dangerous and increases chances of injury. Its common sense. This is why they have you wear helmets. And yes, wearing a helmet doesn't make you free from risks. Scientists are starting to understand this better, yes. We know more specifically what the actual risks are, yes. But playing football is a choice. The NFL doesn't force people to play and fans don't want the sport to go away. As long as there are players willing to get paid for these risks or even the chance to get paid, it will happen by the players' own choice.

Because Football has entwined into American culture like nothing else. I would say more people 'celebrate' Super Bowl than Christmas in America. Not only that, a lot of tax money is spent on it. There's going to be $70 million stadium in Texas for High-School games, and that range is not uncommon in the state.
@geofftsjy
@geofftsjy 7 жыл бұрын
muddi900 exactly. Point is that it should not be. It's celebrated so much that it can fund itself and doesn't need tax subsidies. I watched the full episode and it makes more sense: they're advocating not having kids tackle their brains out as a personal choice parents should make.

Other sport as boxe (indeed it was known as dementia pugilistica) but also football (soccer) can cause CTE (also driving). Everytime your body and your head change from moving to suddenly stopping a damage can be generated. Just imagine a very high pie with numerous layers in a car. When the car stop the higher layers move faster than the lower layer. In our brains is the same: Our cortex has layers, interconnected by axons (roads of the nervous system). When a layer moves and the ones under it don't, or move slower, these axons are stretched and broken (also determinating small emohrragiae which are used to diagnosed the CTE during the authopsy - no other way to diagnose the pathology are known). No matter if you have or have not an helmet, the pie inside will ever move. To end, yes, some studies show that also playing soccer you can develop CTE.

What do you mean with "how"? This is literally what he was talking about in the video. He explained it pretty fine with the brain "dancing around" like you put it. Let me repeat it for you: When the skull is moving fast and get's stopped abruptly the brain is moving around quickly and get's streched and squeezed. This is damaging the brain cells because they get ripped appart. And this abrupt stopping happens with every normal tackle. And helmets dont work because it doesn't prevent the movement of the brain. See? He explained "how" it happens.

I really prefer Adam Ruins Everything when they also offer a solution or alternative. TSA doing nothing? Sack em and focus on air marshals and plane's structural security. Charity canned food drives are nearly worthless? Donate money directly instead, they can multiply by buying in bulk from their connections with local businesses. People payed unfairly or even with prejudice in the workplace? Share and compare your salary with others. Concussions are an obvious side effect from professional football. I mean... okay... yeah... that's true... buuuut carpal tunnel is an obvious side effect from professional secretarial work. Everyone knows about it, yet everyone also knows that neither occupation is going anywhere. So what's your point?

If this is the case then it's 10x as worse for Rugby players because they don't even wear helmets and are always claiming that their hits are harder. Plus they're always claiming that football is over after a few secs and get a 30 sec break whereas rugby players keep going, so their hits are much more often. This is why i don't understand when rugby players are always bragging how not wearing a helmet makes their sport better and are considered "real men" for not wearing a helmet. That's not something to brag about!
