Yeah, I can confirm this as true. My math teacher in eighth grade was an Olympic silver medalist. She could barely afford ends meet after winning and had to go into teaching just to survive. She worked her whole life to achieve a goal, did it, then had to start all over again without an income. I miss her and hope she’s doing all right today

Oh, I knew about this during the 2002 winter Olympics, some of the athletes got kicked out of their hotel because some people eager to see the Olympics were willing to pay more. So my aunt who worked at the Olympics at that time, when she heard about it, asked my grandma if they could live at their place. She agreed to it, so during the Olympics and two weeks prior we had some of the athletes living in her basement while they attended their events. Mind you my grandma's basement is very nice and well furnished with a lot of rooms and beds and was just down the street from the Olympics so it worked well for them. They were very grateful, my grandma saw it as a service, and didn't charge them anything for it. Although they did give her some of the 'athlete exclusive items' as a present, which we still have.

It used to be even worse though. Before the modern olympics were established, sports were seen as a pastime for the idle rich, those who could afford to spend their time honing their body on games. But right around the turn of the century, professional sports started to become a thing, and the rich despised them, because they allowed poor people to support themselves by playing the games that used to be exclusive to the upper class. Thus when the Olympics were devised they made sure that the prestige associated with them would be exclusive to amateurs and barred anyone who received compensation for their competition. Nowadays the rules have loosened somewhat and professionals can compete in most categories, but I imagine there’s still some problems Adam will explore.

In Australia it depends on the sport. Swimmers, cyclists and many (but not all) team Olympic sports players get their training subsidised such that they can make a career of it. In less prestigious sports, some training and expenses are covered, but usually less so. This approach allowed Australia to have the fourth most gold medals in 2000 and 2004, despite having only 0.3% of the world's population.
@yannikmayer5507
@yannikmayer5507 5 жыл бұрын
I didn´t know Australia barely has more population than rumania. That´s really crazy. One tip: don´t use relative world´s Population ever. Better mention absolute numbers in this case. The USA only has 4% of world´s pop for example, which doesn´t sound like a lot either. 300 Million a lot, when you know Australia only has 23ish. Usually people know the absolute population but not the relative world´s population. I´m Pretty sure you did know the absolute numbers but had to calculate the relative number.

I think the problem is that the Olympics are not seen as a regular tournament and therefore don't offer any real prize instead its seen as a prestigious event and therefore the contestants are supposed to feel honored to be there and crap like that. Now they do get paid like Adam said but what he fails to mention is that its by the medal based on your country so to get paid at all you have to at least get a bronze medal in at least one event. For the US gold medals were like 37,000 silver was 22,000 and bronze was 15,000. Then we are back at the prestige part because if you win gold in a event that is really popular like swimming or the dash you can get marketing deals and merchandise deals but you have to get gold at at least silver and the event has to be pretty popular.
@Mangafan47
@Mangafan47 5 жыл бұрын
And the majority of these deals have a "success"- clause, so if you can't keep your level of Top 3 or get injured (or as a woman pregnant) the sponsors can cancel the contract immediately and/or hold back up to your last 3 pays. A lot of athlets even had to pay compensation if they didn't life the "model" life their marketing companies imagined or at least the media decided they didn't.

There was a story about the Asian Games (Olympics for Asian country) last year in Indonesia. One of the Indonesian athletes was Michael Bambang Hartono, who is representing Indonesia for the bridge tournament (a card game of some sorts). Mr. Hartono is also the richest man in Indonesia, being an entrepeneur in the tobacco and banking business. And he won a bronze medal for said bridge tournament, winning a bonus of IDR 250 million or USD 17,750 (though that was a lot of money for us Indonesians). Let's just say he didn't need that money 😂.

Albert Meadows There are issues with the show which were actually included in an episode on the mistakes the show made over time. Secondly there is a bias at work in this episode as there is no mention of the benefit of higher rents and improved infrastructure that comes with redevelopment. Take the games out of the equation and it’s commonly called gentrification. Here again there is no mention of the benefits of development. Housing in cities is owed by a variety of entities including actual families who can generate huge profits when prices skyrocket. These people turn around and use those funds to pay for education, new housing and retirement security in cities like SF, Chicago and NY where prices have turned working class communities into affluent ones. What do we tell a family that is about to make 3 million by selling their brownstone in Brooklyn ? Sorry but we rather you not make all this money and instead are denied the CHOICE to sell? Sorry but for every downside of development there is an up side. Something that his show never addresses or omits in terms of the issues he wants to touch upon.

There should be a prize amount paid for winning, but it would be beyond the scope of society to pay every Olympic hopeful to train. Hell if they did I'd probably sign up, why not? Getting a paycheck to keep in shape sounds amazing and if I lose, oh well.
@hittingyouoverthehead
@hittingyouoverthehead 5 жыл бұрын
@@danielgehring7437 It doesn't have to be like that. There can be a rank list among all the Olympic hopefuls and the rule could be something like - top 10 athletes in there get funded by government, and the remaining 90 would at least get 50% compensated or something like that.

@@hittingyouoverthehead Many would object to having their tax dollars going to fund people to work out all day, especially when they lose. There is also the problem of intent: back in the day the Soviet Union used to do exactly what we're talking about here, paying top contenders and Chess masters lavish amounts to promote what ended up being a corrupt system. It will look like jingoism if any country started doing it these days.

@@danielgehring7437 You gladly give your tax money to feeding and clothing prisoners. You give it to politicians looking to make a quick buck. Why should this be any different? At least these are people trying to contribute something to the country.
@danielgehring7437
@danielgehring7437 5 жыл бұрын
@@hittingyouoverthehead First off, gladly? No. We feed and clothe prisoners because it would be cruel not to; we pay politicians because nobody would do it for free and, for better or ill, we do need it. Somebody wanting to get paid because they really, really like being swoll is not a valid comparison. Frankly just the fact that they have a chance at being paid to do so is more than most people get for their desires. A better comparison would be, say, someone who really, really likes anime and could, at least theoretically, benefit the country by compiling it and maybe starting a KZbin channel to guide people's watching habits... how much of a government subsidy should I... I mean they get? You're not being realistic. If we gave everyone with potential free money, we'd be paying more in taxes than we make on our paychecks. People are starving in our streets and can't afford their doctor's bills and you want to fund professional sports athletes who only work once every four years?

Until somewhat recently, the Olympics forbid professional athletes from participating. The athletes were doing it because they loved the sport, and they considered it an honor to represent their country in the competition. This is why some countries gave some of their professional athletes fake jobs to get around the amateur-only rule. 1992 was the first year that professional athletes were allowed to participate in the olympic games. That year also saw the formation of the Dream Team by the NBA and is widely considered to be the greatest sports team ever assembled. So for 80-90% of the athletes who aren't participating in a major professional sport in their country, they are getting paid next to nothing, if at all. They do receive compensation for winning medals though, and many of the more famous athletes, like Michael Phelps, receive very generous endorsement packages from companies wishing to capitalize on their achievements. Gold medal winners in the US often get featured on the Wheaties cereal box, and many of them endorse sports equipment companies.

This isnt true for all countries, atleast in Finland if you lift enough in weightlifting they pay travel expenses for international comps. Atleast most western countries have some kinds of programs to help athletes aither it goverment run or privite run programs. For example some countries give prizes for breaking records. Yes gold medal dont pay money but it payes indirectly. You can start coaching people and do sponsorships. Theres a lot of thing you can do. Example, Alex Lee 67kg weightlifter dude has sponsors and hes own club gym.

Olympic athletes are never paid and weren't allowed to be professionals until the IOC realized that they couldn't stop countries (specifically, Soviet Bloc countries like East Germany) from giving athletes token jobs that they'd never go to because they were too busy training. Jim Thorpe famously had his medals taken away from him because he accepted compensation to take the bus to baseball practice (he got them back posthumously). Some high-profile athletes might make a ton (like Michael Phelps), but what happens if you win a gold medal in judo or fencing? What if you win a bronze? Then what?
