Nice video, brings back memories. Your correct Metal Flow started in the the late 70’s. Feb 1979 to be exact. The prefix for all your jobs was 279 for that reason.

Congratulations and good luck. It can be scary quitting your full time job and going out on your own. I did that myself and had a great time doing it proving that doing good work for a fair price, not giving your time away can be successful if one puts a sincere effort into the business. Although there are no guarantees, you just do your best.

Where I retired from had a number of presses for mostly sheet metal. The largest press was a 600 ton 8 station by KRUPP and was 3 stories tall. It was used to stamp out the upper and lower shells for AC compressors. The blanks came in already coated and the heaviest was 18.1 lbs. The shells when welded up were designed for 1200 psi and were hydroed to 1800 psi. After the compressor manufacturing was sent to Mexico, the press was sold to an outfit near Toronto, ON Canada. It wasn't very loud when running but you could feel it in the floor. It was run up to about 15 to 17 strokes per minute.

The 3 aida presses are 600s as well. Metal flow's presses are set up rather nice, there's a small lathe next to one of them and when I indicate a part in I didn't have any trouble. But one of the places I worked before the lathe I used would be half the building away but the indicator needle would bounce around with each hit made by some of the presses.

It would have been cool to see how that cam actuated series press at 4:55 worked. Good luck at the new job!

Tool and die work has always fascinated me. Deep drawing, while there's a lot of science behind it, it's not as cut and dry as simple machine shop work. There's a lot of trial and error involved in designing and setting up the dies. Experience goes a long way towards knowing how much you can draw or stretch the metal at any one station. When it comes to deep draw, old school, is still the way it's done.
@SolidRockMachineShopInc5 жыл бұрын
There is a lot involved deep draw. I was fortunate to be able to work with some very wise people in the field.

Is Solid Rock in or near Holland also? I am located near the town and would be honored to meet with you and your family. I retired from the die/machine tool trade 4 years ago, but enjoy keeping up with and sharing my knowledge with anyone. I feel it important to maintain an educational resource, especially for young apprentices, and everyone just wanting to expand their skills.
