It’s an American thing, here in the UK our PAL tv’s had higher resolution so no scan lines, I had the best set up, US 60hz SNES and Japanese 60hz Megadrive with RGB Scart cables on my 14” Sony Trinitron CRT, still have the consoles but not the TV, picture didn’t get better than that, full speed 60hz consoles, no borders!

you most likely used 480i on a smaller set or even semi large. You cant even really see scanlines that well on a 13 inch 240p. people who like scanlines mostly used s-video on a larger tv like 20-32 inch with a 240p source. CRT is literally a superior technology. no motion blur, no input lag, and every resolution is effectively native.

Though what I need to make the PS2 video quality great is that I need the HD Retrovision (PS2/PS3) component cables (switch from RGB to the other on the system configuration), hook it to Retrotink 2X Pro, turn on smoothing, plug in an MClassic to the Retrotink 2X Pro HDMI, then connect an HDMI cable from the MClassic to the HDTV. I have found the transcoding feature very useful in my setup. I have both the 2X and the OSSC. For S-Video sources I have paired this with a no-lag HDMI to Component converter (Mike Chi has used this in a demo video) to get those sources into the OSSC. Now I use the transcoding feature to tame the 240p coming out of the SNES HD Retrovision cables, which cause a blinking image on my TV directly. Using the same HDMI to Component converter, no more blinking. Seems roundabout but it's working great.

1:16 I haven't used the Super 64 or RAD2X cables myself, but without even using them I see a serious design flaw. Despite using the same technology of the RetroTINK, there's no passthrough option. If you're playing a 480i or 576i game, that forces you to play with that terrible bob-interlacing that sacrifices half the resolution.
@chchris253 жыл бұрын
Adam, the PS2 looks best with HD Retrovision cables + DVDO iScan + mCable. The iScan is the fastest and best de-interlaser I have ever seen. It also lets you upscale, overscan, and add additional image enhancements. When all 3 are combined, 480i content looks like native 480P content. Similar or better than the PS3 60gb can handle PS2.

It's the reason why I keep a Sony Trinitron, a JVC I Art, my Toshiba etc, for their glorious 480i. Not just for Ps2 obviously but it's nice being to able to preserve the crts for the 240p systems, instead of the 6th gen 480p ones.
@WhiteJarrah4 жыл бұрын
23:07 *Facepalm* With due respect Adam, anybody who recommends linedoublers for interlaced content should have their hands chopped off. The reason the RetroTINK looks so good on things like the Supper Nintendo and Sega Mega Drive is because you are primarily sending progressive signals to it. With 240p and 288p, the device has all the horizontal lines of each frame to work with right from the word go. But with the PS2, the output is primarily 480i or 576i. Interlaced means the odd and even lines that make up each frame are displayed separately. So 30 frames per second is actually 60 half frames per second, half as in half the lines that make up the image. That means at any even time, the OSSC only has half the picture to work with, linedoubling that means half the vertical resolution is sacrificed to make a pseudo-progressive frame. And because each field shows different parts of the one image, the resulting picture seems to continuously bob up and down to the point it becomes a distraction. Some people appropriate call this mess "bob-deinterlacing". If you must upscale PS2 content, you should deinterlace it properly. You can clearly see that the component passthrough looks substantially better because the TV or capture card is deinterlacing it properly so that there is no vertical jittering. Hell, even your old SCART to HDMI with the PS2 connected via RGB SCART looks better than the sample you show at 23:08, aside from being stretched to 16/9. kzbin.info/www/bejne/p2qYfWeBaNOIf7s

4:59 I beg to differ. The RetroTINK generally is a great device. But would you believe that my SONY HDTV would not accept any PS1 resolutions coming off the RetroTINK. In fact, it didn't even accept 576i from the PS2 in passthrough mode. Which is really weird, given that it supported a passthrough signal coming off the PS2 to HDMI adapter. And my Elgato HD didn't support anything coming off the RetroTINK, that's despite accepting the OSSC's 2x mode. As was the case with the OSSC, the only use I got out of the RetroTINK was feeding it into the HDMI input on your old SCART to HDMI box so that my display and capture card could accept the output. I've tried the mClassic, but the picture looks way too blurred on 2D games.
@WhiteJarrah4 жыл бұрын
14:38 Ironically the SCART version of the RetroTINK seems rather stripped down and inferior. It only supports RGB, which seems like a missed opportunity given that SCART can also carry composite, S-video and YPbPr. There's also no passthrough option. If it had those functions, it would have been hands down the ultimate RetroTINK.
@atomiswave19714 жыл бұрын
The reason its important to have scanline capability is because on 2D sprite games the sprites were not meant to be seen with twice the line resolution. By doing that your effectively filling in gaps with color and it loses the look of the original sprite. On 3D games its probably not worth it. I have to say the scan lines look pretty dire on this box, they are more like blinds. Scanlines are not supposed to be the same level of depth as the field which is turned on. On all my devices the scanlines are beautiful and colorful and the brightness drops about 3-5%, not 40% like in your demo. Since I have 3 arcade cabinets in my garage I know what 240p should look like. Just watch any youtube video about scanlines and you will see that games actually look beautiful with scanlines. Its the way they were intended to be played and true RGB signals accentuate the look very well. Thanks for showing the scanlines, I don't blame you for not liking them.

Have you considered getting an OSSC 1.6? Judging by your videos you seem to run everything through the mClassic. The mClassic only seems to support the 2x mode on the OSSC and the OSSC supports 240p, 480i, 480p, 720p and 1080i, plus the PAL equivalents.

Your explanations are a bit over done. The reason the pro doesn't work with 480p is because its upscaling to 480p max. Its designed to upscale 240p to 480p. The tech inside that does that does not allow pass through which is a shame. If you plug 480p into this device you see 2 images, one on the left for the odd field lines and one on the right for the even field lines. All these filter/smoothings and such and it doesn't have a passthrough switch.. I was going to buy one of these, but since the scanlines are a bit over done I think i'll wait for a later model that does them better. Or just get an OSSC, which does them brilliantly. I think you have one, so if your knowledgeable you should know how to get the best from it.

So I just purchased the Genesis model 1 Version. Haven’t purchased any of the needed cables yet. You recommend the HD Retro Vision cables to go along with the Retro Tink 2X Pro and nothing else needed?

Depends on your budget. Personally I went with the Framemeister, RGB SCART cables, and an mClassic.

Do you think that using the Retrotink 2X Pro is the best at achieving the highest quality video & audio feed to HDMI for the PS2? You see, what I'm currently trying to achieve is being able to record PS2 gameplay footage at the highest achievable quality that it can output.

I'll have a new video about this very soon. Sit tight, but short answer...wait for the RetroTink 5X.

@@AdamKoralik Nice! I've heard good things about the brand. If you don't mind me asking, I could use a little help with a couple bits of information about very specific PS2 video/audio output configuration for a specific game for a very specific reason. I am making a educational video for my fellow PS2 enthusiasts, that will explain exactly everything you need to get, and everything you need to do, to get the truest most pure video footage of a specific game.

Hey Adam, I still have my Genesis Model 2/Sega CD/32X setup connected to my Framemeister via RGB SCART, to my Sony 4K TV. Is this still the best way or should I do the whole genesis component to the retro tink 2 to the mCable to the TV like you mentioned in this video? Thank you, friend.

The mClassic would he an option, while it would help certain things, the smoothing effect on 2D content isn't for everyone.

Hey Adam... I have the otaku scart Switch. Not sure if you're familiar with them. Sure I can get the retrotink scart but It has a component output which my TV doesn't seem to recognize since it's 240p. Do you think the retrotink pro could help with that?

Both RetroTink models will output at 480p, so either one will fix the resolution problem

Question for you. If I have the cables from HD Retrovision cables for Genesis connected to my Tube TV, can I still play light gun games? Same thing for the Original Playstation, Saturn, NES, SuperNES? Is it possible to play gun games while trying to get the best output?
@AdamKoralik4 жыл бұрын
If you have a CRT that supports component, then yeah you kind of have the best of both worlds. No reason it shouldn't work with lightguns if it's a CRT.

@RaymondYouTube14 жыл бұрын
Adam Koralik okay, maybe not native 8K, I think they just meant 8K support while playing 4K upscaled to 8K. Maybe 8K video playback is possible. It’s like when 4K support was on PS4 and Xbox One as just video playback. Later on, true 4K gaming was introduced with PS4 Pro and Xbox One X. If it’s possible on those systems then it’ll be possible with the PS5 and Xbox Series X. But the point is are looking forward for an 8K TV for 8K content? I know they’re really expensive, I know 8K is still a new thing. But it’s your decision.

Is the flickering with line doubling part of it or is it a capture card issue?

Using retro 2x pro, which console will produce the best quality picture for a ps1 game? Ps1 with svideo, or ps2 with component? Thanks

It won't work with component. I recommend RGB SCART, assuming you want to use original hardware. Alternative is to use a PS3 via HDMI.

Hate to ask this but after searching I couldn't find an answer. You mentioned that your tv does have component inputs. I have one that does as well (though it's just a run of the mill HD tv I got for like $70 at Walmart on a Christmas sale like 5 years ago). What's the difference between just plugging straight in and plugging component cables into a device like this? I'm just going to assume due to not being able to find any information that there's a reason why you wouldn't plug straight in and would use something like this but it seems like an extra step to me.
@AdamKoralik4 жыл бұрын
That's an extremely long answer. But the short version is... Old consoles generally output a low resolution 240p signal. HDTVs can't understand that, and they know they can't, so they just upscale it to 480i, or you just get a black screen. The problem there is that they not only do it poorly, but they also add interlacing to the image. This people need devices like this. There are almost no HDTVs that natively support 240p signals and display them correctly.

@crandor64 жыл бұрын
23:25 is that........ better? there's so much flickering
@AdamKoralik4 жыл бұрын
It's a byproduct of the recording process. The equipment is way more sensitive to deinterlacing than the human eye would be on a TV.

My ps2 is hooked up to a 60 inch 4k tv and using 10 dollar component cable looks like garbage will this 2x pro alone help upscale to at least 1080p and 16:9.

PS2 is annoying, you can never make it look good. Just less bad.
@OGaurabless3 ай бұрын
why does line doubling + component make the picture jump around on ps2? is that how it looks in the real world or just on the capture?
@AdamKoralik3 ай бұрын
Because the source is 480i, so it's basically trying to artificially produce 480p without enough data. IE, it shakes.

@@AdamKoralik makes sense, so probably the best way is an actual flatscreen crt with component or maybe just emulating the experience. I recently got a slim ps2 again (since when they originally came out) so I was wondering the best way for it to look crisp on modern displays.

Would this be good for PS1 games and games in collections that were made well before the 6th gen (Like MMX1 - 3 in the MMX Collection)? I ask because every time I want to play these kinds of games, I always have to swap out my component cables for composite ones due to the picture position always being offset to the right-hand side, regardless of any screen adjustment attempts.
