I do appreciate that the BBC is doing well. Soon I think they'll focus more on iPlayer than standard TV, although I do still enjoy the simplicity of turning the TV on and watching what's on. I still think that the TV Licence is a bit bizarre, but if that means we can watch content that isn't swayed by advertising, that's a good thing.
@betelanusАй бұрын
Doubt they look at tv licences. Living in Africa, we use it regularly, and maybe once in a while it'll ask if we have a license, we say yes and it goes away

Ya know, there's so much anti BBC rhetoric on KZbin, it's nice to get a bit of good news for a change.
@sayachan6069Ай бұрын
Its so suffocating to see so much anti public TV sentament online that goes unchallenged, I've always felt its been funded by a lot of reactionary political actors that want the BBC gone so the private sector can sweep everything up.

Under every BBC news post are a collection of “defund the BBC”, like do they not use the iPlayer? I originally used it last year to hunt for films from the 30’-50’s, I’ve ended up using it every week as they regularly add a fairly diverse set of films, more than one can get through in a week. I have no need for Netflix or Amazon.

The BBC has a rare advantage over most broadcasters, except perhaps ITV, that they have decades worth of archive programming they can exploit and I'm glad we've seen a lot more of that put on to the iPlayer in recent years, like Doctor Who, but I'm sure it's just the tip of the iceberg. They should be capitalising on people's nostalgia. For instance, if they put the likes of ChuckleVision on there I bet it would be a great hit, as you hear stories of people tracking the episodes down on KZbin to show to their own children. That would put them even further above the rest I think.
@FoggyDАй бұрын
If not all of ChuckleVision, they could at least give us the complete (much smaller) back catalogue of To Me, To You.

7:38 ITV and Channel 4 ditched the TV guide navigation in favour for a Netflix style. iPlayer hangs onto its TV guide but it still is a bit buried. I want to know what I missed on TV today or yesterday which is difficult with ITVX and Channel 4.

Define "Growth"... Is that downloads? page views? Hours watched? Because you can't say "subscribers" unless you mean "people who pay a license fee" in which case what your actually saying is "People who own a tv in the UK and might have clicked on Eastenders catch up or pressed the red button to watch more of a certain Olympics event at any point over the summer... For no extra cost" It's no where in the same category as saying "Someone paid for a Netflix subscription"

No mention of the lack of surround sound audio from iPlayer. BBC linear HD channels frequently offer 5.1 audio on many programmes, yet on iPlayer both HD and 4K HLG content is still only delivered with compressed 2.0 sound. Not good enough in 2024.

Interesting video thanks. I used I player quite a lot and I like its lay out!. I’m lucky to live in a property that is covered by a licence, but I’m not sure how use of the iPlayer is monitored effectively, There is an occasional message that pops up asking you if you have a license if you click on yes it goes away and the program begins . I’m not sure how they monitor that unless they take IP addresses and they can authenticate licenses that way
@djmattblackАй бұрын
Perhaps the BBC could open their iplayer to international audiences as im pretty sure with all the content they could achieve a much bigger audience worldwide and perhaps look towards a future funding model that does not require the license fee

Isn't that what Britbox is (was? Not heard anything about it for a while,) supposed to be about - getting subscription money for old BBC/ ITV content
@RacingAtHomeАй бұрын
This isn't a terrible idea. There are some shows that are massively popular around the world. Top Gear was one of the most viewed programs in the world at one point in the 2000s and those same people will find it a hell of a lot easier to watch the classic episodes of that show. I watch a TV show which has a small following outside of the UK. Even though there are episodes from Series 1-7 on KZbin, it's not the way we watch it with music and it's otherwise difficult to access. The only option they've got is to essentially use a VPN. Those people would absolutely pay and benefit from a subscription fee like you mention. Though the issue I previously mentioned might be a stumbling block. The ease of music licensing for the BBC may have terms in it which reduce the ability to allow people to watch these shows outside of the UK. Though there are some (like Top Gear) which don't have that issue due to the lack of music.

And no moaning from ppl that dont want to fund bbc as dont have to. Still think all commercial linear be better as one big streamimg service as have more cash invest in streaming like bbc has done yearly and netflix etc and also be more might to take on usa rivals

We dont need an entertainment conglomerate. Just ask the US how that works out. Almost everything is owned in some way by Disney, if it isnt, its owned by Comcast or News Corp. Those last two are thier own ice bergs, for the reason they own Sky. Fox News and Sky News are effectively sibling news networks.

@matthitchen 👀 you do know Doctor Who was created by a Canadian immigrant (Sydney Newman) and produced by a jewish woman (Verity Lambert)? how about the first story being directed by a gay Asian man (Waris Hussein) or one of the main three baddies (Daleks) being based on Nazis? The Third Doctor era touching on racism (The Silurians) and environmentalism (The Green Death), the Fourth Doctor era taking the mick out of banks (The Sun Makers) or the Seventh Doctor era taking the mick out of government (The Happiness Patrol)? The revival in the 2000s to present day was started by a gay man (Russell T Davies) and the first series in 2005 had a pansexual character (Captain Jack Harkness played by a gay actor: John Barrowman)? The writing is the problem, not the casting. Can you define “woke” without mentioning women, the LGBT Community, POC, people with disabilities or different religions?
@Pauls_ArchiveАй бұрын
The BBC is more than Dr Who, which in my opinion is shit anyway, fantasy crap!. I’ve honestly never ever rated it. I have a couple of friends however who are really big fans and they have not enjoyed the recent Doctor Who at all. Maybe that’s the reason that the figures are falling for that show storylines just aren’t as good.
