There was an auction of this film's props and costumes back in the day that I missed by virtue of being a day late hearing about it and having no money at the time, but I will always regret not getting a chance to get one of the original armor sets. This movie shares a special place with a few others for me concerning the detail in special effects beyond the immediate impression. What this means is on repeated viewing(s) I continually find small things that didn't 'need' to be included but were and I consider this a great example of pride in one's efforts. I don't mean 'Easter Eggs' but extra detail which really sells the scenes. BTW: Since you put your own efforts into the sponsor, I don't skip. Still laughing at the Xander 'freeze frame'.

The bugs *did strike* Buenos Ares (it wasn't a false flag per the director). The bugs were an intersteller species (per the movie) The bugs did serious damage to multiple human colonies including the vacation planet (per the movie) The bugs had bread special purpose bugs that could bring down intersteller warships in orbit. And the federation was a constitutional republic with a limited voter franchise-- that allowed more of the population to vote than every democracy pre 1900 and many pre 1939. They didn't have a dictator.. .they didn't violently suppress people who disagreed with the government... they didn't control the economy ( rico's parents were not soldiers but were crazy wealthy). The Robert Heinlein novel that this movie is (very loosely) based on is one of my Desert Island books. It's Heinlein's tribute to and discussion of patriotism, which he viewed as survival at a national level. It's well worth reading just for the classroom discussions, which Verhoeven pretty much omits from his film.

One of my favorite things in this whole movie. Is how when they are filming for that news broadcast that keeps asking if you want to know more. Anytime they show you a battle scene or the aftermath of a battle scene they show it in complete gory grizzly detail......... But they censor a cow getting killed. One of their reporters got bitten in half completely unedited... Got to protect the dignity of those cows though.......

In the book, the recruit's arm was broken by accident because he charged too soon and Zim apologized to him. And the Dizzy/Zim fight was Zim vs the son of the man who trained Zim (and it ended about the same). However, in the movie it is actually a great science fiction moment (along with the knife scene) because it shows you just how effective their medical technology is which pays for the scene with johnny's leg later. A compound fracture is basically pain-free in 15 minutes and healed by the following day.

I always find it weird when people say CGI is ok, or "holds up", when they can't even tell the difference between CG and live action. Like... doesn't the fact you can't tell the difference mean it looks amazing, in your eyes? I see this happen so many times. With some people literally saying "Is that cg, or live action?", then at the end, going "The CG was alright, definitely dated tho". I don't know what you people are basing this on. Not just for Starship Troopers, but any movie pre-2005

Dizz dying is really important part of the film , Rico gets to eulogize the most passionate, brave and loyal character in the entire film and the only woman that will ever love him ......he reaches down to most meaningful thing to say , and he regurgitates the regimes boiler plate sentiments. Ooooooof in re-watching thats a gut punch.

So, I'm sure loads of people have already suggested these films, but your acquired love for sci-fi really requires you to see "Children of Men" (generally considered the best sci-film of this century); "Arrival" (which I love so, so much); "Blade Runner"(one of the OG classics of the genre) and then "Blade Runner 2049" (which is so gorgeous and I also really loved); "District 9" which I think is slightly forgotten but just great; and for a real mind bender, "Under the Skin" with Scarlett Johansson. I'm sure others can add even more to that list. Great reaction to this film, which is sort of a guilty pleasure watch for me. So cheesy but amazing creature effects.

The fact that this movie came out before 9/11. It was prophetic. The USA was attacked much like Earth was in this movie, and our response, from two endless wars to the Patriot Act all proved the director of this movie right. 'War makes fascists of us all'. I watched this movie as a young teen and even then I understood that it was seducing me while also showing me the absurdity of the message it was preaching. I loved it then and still love it. Such a good movie.
