This was originally a serious movie but when the CEO of Morgan Creel Productions wanted a mass appeal comedy Tom Shadyac who had been a joke writer for Bob Hope pitched rewriting the script which Jim Carrey was later a part of. They only spent $15 million and it had mixed critic reviews but with his role on In Living Color and the release of Dumb and Dumber and The Mask in the same year fans were hooked. Other fun things they let Jim Carrey do anything he wanted which if you see gag reels from other movies was something that stuck. Rick Moranis was the first actor they wanted for the role and they also considered Alan Rickman.
