Good work. The only thing I would add would be to board in the underside of the stairs and maybe insulate to lessen the sound of people walking up and down

A couple notes: 1. You generally want to avoid putting a drywall joint above a door as joints in those areas are prone to developing cracks. 2. You're using your drywall router wrong. Specifically, when routing out around the outside of an object (e.g., electrical box) you want to do so in a counter-clockwise direction. The bit will then tend to hug the box as you go rather than wander away from it, especially noticeable at the corner of a box. Likewise, when you route around the inside (e.g., a doorway or window opening) you want to move in a clockwise direction for the same reason. Your drywall taping and mudding looks really well done for a DIYer. You're using the right products (paper tape and all purpose mud). One suggestion would be to tape the joints up to the corner bead before you run the setting type compound on an outside angle. Or, if you don't want to do that, at least embed 6" or so of paper tape in setting type compound before you mud the angle. (You can even use the same batch of mud -- just mix a bit of aluminum sulfate onto the mud on your hawk and that mud will become 1 minute or 5 minute or 10 minute mud.) I can't tell if you're adding any water to your taping mud, but it looks like it could use a bit more. The tape will embed easier and you'll be less likely to get bubbles under the tape. Too much water, though, and you may tend to squeeze out all the mud, again causing bubbles. Too much water will also cause adhesion problems, so don't go crazy. I'm also going to mention the lack of drywall under the stairs. When you enclose that space you're creating a place where a fire can go undetected for a longer period and can compromise the stairs (read: an escape route) before you know it.

What a great job you did! My 23 YO daughter and I (58, with severe Osteoarthritis) are in the process of finishing two large bedrooms at my parents summer home so they can move here to be near us. Neither of us has any experience, and all I can say is---I'll NEVER do this again. Every step of the way has had huge challenges, and living out here in the sticks we haven't been able to find people to do any of it for us. We've had to learn everything ourselves (thanks KZbin!),, and although I do enjoy learning new skills, this has been more than I really needed to tackle at my age and condition. Tomorrow we start priming walls---so I can see the light at the end of the tunnel--and I'm pretty sure it's not a train. Wish I'd known that trick to hold the sheetrock up while I was screwing it to the studs!

Inevitable concern inbound The stud spot having wire going through didnt have plates placed over them to protect the wire. The electrical is being junctioned at a receptacle instead of a junction box. Seems there might be a bit too high of a load on that one circut. The water heater accessibility has been reduced to the absolute minimum. Inevitable praise. Looks really nice, the trim and basebords look phenomenal. The addition of the door to the understairs was great, and it was an excellent use of the open space.

Looks fantastic, although I see one huge issue, you didn't use "Pressure Treated Wood" on the bottom plates when you built the walls (the bottom parts of the 2x4's directly touching the concrete). As concrete is porous and wicks water like a sponge. It may not happen immediately but when the concrete gets wet, whether it be from the water tank leaking, or just naturally from the ground underneath getting overly wet after a heavy rain, you're going to be dealing with the wood beginning to rot on the bottom since it's not pressure treated. You should always use pressure treated wood on anything that is directly touching concrete, or being built outside to prevent the wood from rotting.
@Kordare Жыл бұрын
Yup I usually do but didn't on this project. The concrete is fully sealed and will not absorb water from the top and has never sweat so I don't think it is a big deal in this situation. I did use all treated bottom plates for the bathroom and laundry room I just built.
@quentinwolf Жыл бұрын

@TinaP1234 Жыл бұрын
Pressure treated or in our area, the code is for a strip of a kind of foam. It comes in rolls. It is installed between the welll and the concrete floor. Also not framing the stairwell wall seperate from the staircase, is going to lead to cracks in the drywall joints.

Part of me would've preferred to do an exterior door for the water heater space and just wall in the inside & insulate the compartment vs the rest of the building, but that's probably much more expensive than just adding an access under the stairs like you did. Water heaters are a pain to move in small places & around corners.

dunno about where he is, but in NY wiring definately doesnt need to be protected, though admittedly they should, imagine hammering in a nail only to nail right into a live wire, better hope your hammer has a rubber handle!

@@Kordare Protection (i.e., plates) are required when the edge of the hole you bored for the wire (not necessarily the wire itself) is less than 1-1/4" inches from the face of the stud. So a wire centered in a normal stud doesn't need protection, but in cases where you can't (or just don't) maintain that 1-1/4" distance then you have to.
