Improving slow running by adding power pickups to locomotive tenders. Modern model steam locomotives usually have multiple pickups (often from the tender) to improve slow running over points. This can be done to older locomotives with a little effort. This video shows how I have done this. I hope it is of interest and maybe you can do the same or similar to yours.

Amazing slow running. The guy who was the “expert” on Triang ( cannot mention his name) suggested modifying the old Triang R965 controller would provide slow running. I found a few and followed his instructions and I was able to finally complete the project. Sure enough it worked. I no will have a closer look at all your projects to see if I can easily replicate them👍

My present layout dates back to 1989 or thereby and some of the track isn't the best for level and gauge so additional pickups do help a lot. PWM control makes a huge difference assuming you are staying with DC.

You might remember John’s Amazing Trains ? He modified a Triang controller so he could improve the running/control of his Triang Locos. I successfully modified one as per his instructions. I haven’t fitted it yet, but will get round to it

I have built my own controllers using Arduino processors; that way I have a good level of control over the power delivery. I do remember John; I used his method for changing out wheels on old Triang wagons that had metal axles; replaced with bearings and pinpoint wheel sets.

X6226, I had to butcher it a bit and fit a bar to connect it to the locomotive as per the original bogie. X6226 is the rear bogie for a Thompson L1.
