They are stagnant and regressive, and are slowly losing the ability to make the more advanced technological legacies of earlier ages, and without intervention will eventually fail at their task. The only real hope for the Imperium is a minor revolution or 'reformation', led by Belisarius Cawl. Then the Mechanicus may be able to reivent some of the lost technologies, and actually understand the principles behind a lot of the stuff that they just build by rote. Now that Gulliman has returned, and the Tyranid situation is so desperate, Cawl with Gullimans backing may have the political and religious power to get the Mechanicus to be original researchers again. But it'll be a difficult transition and the best plan may be to create a new subfaction off Mars, under the protection of Gulliman. So the tech priest of Ultramar may become just as annoyingly OP as the Blue Boys themselves.

It’s all just your local certified master mechanic working on your car now. Grabbing engines and parts from the junk yard to repurpose into functioning replicas of the parts you need. That’s what the mechanicus is basically.

These characters are like a cross between the Borg and the machine s from The Matrix franchise. Warhammer 40000 is over the top crazy with the weapons, armor and other war gadgets. Being the geek that I am would love to see a VS match up between the Imperium of Man and Imperial Galactic Empire. I think by far the Imperium would clean the clock of the Empire that's just me. I think if it was between the IoM and GE the advanced and high-powered weapons would destroy the cathedral-ships and leave so many of the Imperium praying for death, advanced and streamlined Imperial-class Star Destroyers or Executor-class Super Star Destroyers could potentially take a beating and still destroy a small fleet. I'm sure the Adeptus Mechanicus would rather take all the advanced technology they could get their cyberneticized hands on and use it to "improve" the Imperium

I praise and pray to the Omnissiah every morning by feeding its altar two slices of bread. I pull down the switch of reverance as I the chant litanies "Wonder Bread" and it shows its acceptance of my offering by the glow of its magnificent coiled resistances, "By Ohm!" i claim as I bask on its heat and beauty and finally, by the means of its mecha-spring it returns crisp-toasted bread, purged of impurities by heat, a stark reminder on how we must forgo and toast our flesh!

As an outsider to the lore of this weird setting I find the contradiction and adherence to old-style technologies amusing. As advanced as you'd expect for the 41st Millenium they use steam-powered systems when they can be traversing space in warp-driven starships, but view it like a massive religious ritual when they don't even understand it any longer. Inquisitorius: You're a heretic for your disbelief in the God-emperor Adeptus Mechanicus tech-priest: You can't kill us, we know how your technology works Inquisitorius: Dammit!
