Ricky Nelson is probably one of the most underrated singers in American music history. He was the youngest singer ever to have a Number 1 album. From 1957 to 1962, Nelson had 30 Top-40 hits, more than any other artist except Presley and Pat Boone. His video of Travelin` Man is considered the first ever music video. He placed 53 songs on the Billboard Hot 100, and its predecessors, between 1957 and 1973, including "Poor Little Fool" in 1958, which was the first number 1 song on Billboard magazine's then-newly created Hot 100 chart. He recorded 19 additional Top 10 hits and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on January 21, 1987. Nelson is widely credited as a forerunner of the California-based country-rock scene of the 1970s. Ricky/Rick sold in excess of 500 million albums, and even today he is ranked the 4th biggest singles seller of all time. The Nelson family (Ricks Father Ozzie Nelson, rock legend Rick Nelson, and Ricks twin sons Matthew & Gunnar) are in the Guinness Book of World Records as the Only family in Entertainment with 3 successive generations of #1 hitmakers.

That is the great guitarist James Burton who also played with Elvis Presley. You were right Harry he had 4 children, a daughter named Tracy ,who had a long acting career, and twin brothers , Matthew and Gunnar, who were fairly famous musicians.They were called Nelson. His youngest son who also sings a bit, is named Sam and he looks and sings a lot like his father. He had many big hits, Travelin' Man , Hello Mary Lou, Garden Party, Never be anyone else but you, Poor little fool, It's Late, Lonesome Town, and many more.

Hi Harri. Ricky Nelson's time was just a little before I became a listener of popular music (I'm 70), although my father owned a few of his 45s. Most of his popularity was in the time before the Beatles. He was a pop idol of that era, at least as such existed pre-British invasion. In his later years, he wrote a song called "Garden Party" that detailed his experience playing in an "Oldies Revival" and getting booed when he did a few of his new tunes. That song appeared in '72. He was killed in a plane crash in '85, I believe. His family (him, mother, father, brother) starred in a sitcom which started in 1952 and ran thru 1966 (The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet). Ricky debuted his first song on that series. If you want to see how vastly the world has changed since then, take a look at one of the episodes of that series on KZbin. BTW, you say his expression looks sad. I don't think that expression changed much - at least in anything I ever saw him perform.

I'm 75 and we got our 1st tv in '52, the same year they went from radio to tv. Ozzie and Harriet was a family favorite from their radio show and then from the very beginning of the tv show. Ricky was already a teenage heartthrob actor before he started singing in '57 and was famous as an actor even before Elvis recorded his 1st song.

Ricky Nelson "Lonesome Town" is a timeless track. Nelson was more than a teenage idol, although he was that too for a while. "Poor Little Fool", "Travelin Man", "Hello Mary Lou, Goodbye Heart" are a few of his catchier tunes. He tells a good story of his life in the song "Garden Party" -- "Yoko brought her walrus, there was magic in the air" -- great company! Wise song. Ricky Nelson teenage idol parlayed his fame into a role in the 1959 Howard Hawks classic Rio Bravo alongside John Wayne, Dean Martin, Angie Dickinson, Walter Brennan, and Ward Bond. Martin sings "My Rifle, My Pony, and Me". Nelson sings "Get Along Home, Cindy" and the closing theme "Rio Bravo".

“Ricky” Nelson was the heartthrob of many a teenage girl in the early 60’s. Those girls would probably have referred to his sad eyes as “puppy dog eyes”😂. He might very well have experienced some loneliness in spite of all of those girls who worshipped him from afar! We lost him when he was still fairly young. You’re quite right about the frightening number of musicians who have been lost to plane crashes. It’s very sad. 🌺✌️

It was 1952 when his family's tv sitcom, "The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet" premiered. I remember the show so well because I was 6 yrs old when it started and it was the same year we got our 1st tv. It was a must for the whole family every week. He was an immediate tv idol as an actor, and was for several years before he recorded his 1st song ('57).

Aw Harri. My heart still aches. I cried when that plane crashed. Ricky Nelson was my prepubescent fantasy. Long before I knew what my preferences were I would sit in front of the TV watching Ozzie and Harriet and just wait to swoon over Ricky's scenes. Aside from the fact that his body of work remains stellar, he resides in many memories as the ultimate teen idol.

A young Ricky Nelson would ride his motorcycle over to visit his good friend--who lived across the street from us in Canoga Park, CA...Late 50's....And oh, by the way, that's James Burton on guitar--who later backed up Elvis for years...There are other more significant Nelson songs you could have chosen. There's quite a musical history in the Nelson family.
@danielvolk2373 жыл бұрын
He may have had more significant hits but this was the fourth highest ranked hit he had according to billboard top 40. It reached #5. Garden Party only got to #6. His daughter, Tracy (his oldest child) is and has been a prolific actress in movies and tv since she was a little child. I remember her most as the co-star of the "Father Dowling Mysteries", but she's been in too many different series and guest spots to list. She's also battled and overcome cancer several times since she was in her 20's. She's quite a remarkable woman and she looks very much like her father.

Ricky had one of the best forums for his new music. He could sing on Ozzie & Harriet & launch the new single & not many had that opportunity. He had tons of big hit singles & was massively popular. Try Travelin Man or Poor Little Fool, both of those hit #1. Plane crashes have killed so many, too many, of our great artists.
@kittyprydekissme3 жыл бұрын
Technically, it wasn't a plane crash. The plane had a defective heater which started a fire. The pilots were able to land the plane and escape, but the passengers were cut off from the door because of the fire. It was horrible. The Wikipedia article for Ricky Nelson says the term 'Teen Idol' was actually invented to describe him, but there isn't any source given. Until very recently, his family's TV series was the longest-running sitcom in the US. (But not worldwide. Last Of The Summer Wine ran much longer.)

Speaking of those lost in plane crashes, have you done any Buddy Holly yet? Peggy Sue, That'll Be The Day, Rave On and so many others. Also lost in that 1959 plane crash were Ritchie Valens (La Bamba and Donna) and J P Richardson, aka The Big Bopper (Chantilly Lace).

I love Ricky Nelson. I still remember exactly where I was and what I was doing (playing Monopoly with my family and our neighbors at our neighbors' house!) when we heard the news on the radio that Ricky Nelson had died. He really was SO pretty. And talented. I remember sitting beside the radio with a tape recorder to record his songs when they came on the radio in the days long before MP3s existed. I even went to see his two twin sons, Matthew and Gunnar, in concert when they had their own band, Nelson, back in 1991 or 1992 I think it was. That whole family is gorgeous. His wife, the mother of his children, is actor Mark Harmon's sister, which is another very good looking gene pool. When he died, I think it broke the hearts of generations of fans because of his long, successful career. RIP.
