The movie Cabaret was a work of genius. The direction and choreography by Bob Fosse were ground-breaking and the performances, both in acting and music, were stellar. I don't often enjoy musicals, where people break into song and dance for no obvious reason but the musical numbers in Cabaret were placed in a setting that made sense and the lyrics and performances served to underscore the themes of the story. It managed to bring pathos and humour in equal amounts to a time in history that was truly horrific, the rise of Nazism in Germany and yet was hugely entertaining. I would recommend it to anyone. As a small aside, it was based on a Broadway musical and film called "I Am a Camera" which elicited one of my favourite reviews: "Me no Leica".

After seeing the earlier, "I Am a Camera" (same story), I couldn't watch Cabaret again - it just seems way overdone. In I am a Camera, the Sally Bowles character is really endearing, and the Isherwood character as well is more appealing than Michael York. And it seems much closer to real life. YMMV.

And Liza was nowhere near first choice to play the character in the movie. She got the role because lots of Women turned it down. Because it was in Germany Nazi rule and so on.

My mom loved Liza and her mother. The movie was "Cabaret". Think of this song in relation to where it's set. It's set in pre-nazis Germany. During the period of time when they were coming into power. In fact many of the performers would be Jewish and would be dead by the time the war was over.

Cabaret is one of my all time favourites with so many great performances. But to really understand the film, you need to watch Tomorrow Belongs to Me, one of the most chilling scenes in any film, let alone a musical. It won't spoil it for you if you haven't seen it, but it still makes me shudder.

This performance is, in my opinion, the single most perfect combination of music, lyrics and performer ever filmed. If you don't feel invigorated after this, you need some of what Elsie was smoking. Kudos also to the costuming and make-up teams. The close-ups of Ms. Minnelli's have a stunning impact. And, BTW - just to be clear - I like it! 😃

Liza wanted this song 8n the movie and after some argument she was allowed to sing it. And, in a bit of irony, this movie likely would have won for best original soundtrack if it were not for this song being added because she'd sung it on one of her albums before the movie.

Liza was smoking hot in Cabaret wasn't she? Plus it was a perfect platform for her talents as a singer and actress. Spot on reaction to the message of the song but if you watch the entire movie you'll appreciate its context even more. Liza's character, Sally, is singing it in a moment of heartbreak. Though all the songs in the movie are great this is one of my two favorites, the other being "Tomorrow Belongs To Me" which also has a compelling but much darker message. I'd enjoy seeing and hearing your reaction to it. Mahalo

This is so good! Thanks for sharing it. This was the moment Liza Minnelli made a name for herself as an independent artist. I’m always fascinated by the daughters of classic Hollywood, like Liza and Judy Garland, Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds, Mariska Haggarty (Olivia from Law and Order SVU) and Jayne Mansfield. I think Drew Barrymore belongs on the list too, even though her father was a stage actor, she was basically raised by Hollywood and if Hollywood was royalty, she’s the most blue blooded person around. I can imagine that it’s a challenge to succeed as your own person, but Liza has done just that. She inherited her mom’s incredible voice, and unfortunately, her problem with alcohol as well.

A few weeks ago I went to see the new London production of 'Cabaret', the one that people are selling their souls to get tickets for. Eddie Redmayne plays the Emcee (seen briefly at the start of this clip) and Jessie Buckley plays Sally. I have to admit, though I knew this song, I didn't know the story at all - and it is actually really serious, important and moving. And this song . . . well, it has a special and bold place in the running order, let me just put it that way. I hope that the show has been/will be filmed for the cinema or broadcast. I would really really recommend you watch it if it comes out; to be honest, it's been a few weeks now and I'm still kind of shaken and haunted by it. They'll be changing the cast soon, I think. I may go back and see the new people, whoever they may be. (You can get cheapish tickets, I did.)

I actually prefer her performance of “Mein Herr” in the movie. Liza also did the original - and, to me, the best - version of “New York, New York.” The thing about “Cabaret” is that the whole thing is ironic. You’d have to see the movie to know why. And you should see it. Although it’s very much of its era. The show is quite a bit older, and the story is older than that (from a play called “I Am A Camera”).

it has become stunning to me that the younger generation has no reference point to stars like this who are children of previous superstars. Liza Minelli is Judy Garland' s daughters. There was recent movie ""Judy" made, starring Renee Zellweger who won an Oscar for her performance, and yet one must look up Judy Garland ad figure out who she was...seems absurd to have to look her up, with so much media available now instead of 3 TV networks like we had. Liza won the Oscar for this movie, and her mother won a special juvenile Oscar. But Judy was snubbed for the performance of a lifetime in A Star is Born in favor of Grace Kelly in The Country Girl. Liza got revenge for her mother after Judy's death, in Cabaret as far as I am concerned.

This is one of the finest film interpretations of a musical. The opening shows a reflection of the audience. During the course of the film, the Nazis take over Germany and they fade out to the reflection and the audience are Nazis. Subtilty reminding that this can (and does) happen here. The musical is as relevant today. In the musical, the stage featured a mirror as a backdrop so the audience in the theatre also serves as the audience in the play. After Liza's many battles with addiction, she still sang this song in concerts, but changed the closing to "When I go I'm NOT going like Elsie." In other words, to get out and truly enjoy life, you have to overcome your addictions.
