Admitting When I'm Wrong

Point of Clarity: Guidelines state a maximum of 10 people or 50% capacity of the boat whichever is GREATER (The boat capacity was 90 people). Also, I did not see or treat patients until after following all guidelines for safe return.
Thank you for hearing me out. I made a mistake and I apologize. Do not let my lapse in judgment be used to hurt the science behind masks and the other COVID mitigation measures. Once he was told he was wrong, he then realized his mistakes. That's what we are here for. To support him even through his mistakes!

I watched my gran cry when she realised my cousins couldn’t come over for Christmas. I have not seen my boyfriend in months. I want to see the people I love more than anything in the world, I didn’t come home from university until I was tested twice and isolated. To here doctor, who preaches for everyone to take this virus seriously to keep everyone safe is partying on a boat cause they don’t think it will impact THEIR life? You have patients who don’t have the immunity they need to fight the virus. My parents are both front line workers and wouldn’t dream of it. As someone who looks up to you I am incredibly disappointed, especially since this video doesn’t feel like a genuine apology. What would have happened if you caught covid from one of your friends and they had a friend who had a shielding family member? Or if you went into work and spread it to your college’s and patients. That wasn’t a mistake to go on that boat, it was a choice. It takes one person to spread it to hundreds which you very well know and I expected better from you. Edit: I just realised you didn’t even post it on your main channel, no wonder I’m not finding this out until now. If you are sincere about your apology, you wouldn’t hide the topic from your main audience

As someone in the medical field I find this disappointing. We have to do better and practice what we preach. Being a nurse during this pandemic hasn’t been easy and a lot of us are running out of fumes. I’m exhausted, burnt out, and frustrated. My older sister is a doctor. She's doing her residency in internal medicine. You know what she told me when the pandemic first began? "Stay home for me because I can't stay home." I worry that she'll get sick from taking care of her patients. Do you know what she worries about? That if she gets sick, then her colleagues will be short staffed during a pandemic. That if she needs to be hospitalized, then she worries that she will be taking a hospital bed and a ventilator away from someone else who needs it. I just wanted to point out that wearing a mask, social distancing, and quarantining doesn't just protect you, but also protects others. Following guidelines helps keep everyone safe. Please stay at home if you're able to, because people like healthcare workers and other essential workers aren't able to stay at home. Even if the pandemic "is a scam", wouldn't it be better to wear a mask and social distance in case there's a possibility that it could save someone's life? The *temporary* discomfort of wearing a mask is well worth the benefit of potentially saving other people's lives.

Sure. Risk is a spectrum. Risk-benefit analysis is hard. However, these “risks” should be things like school, jobs, and grocery shopping. Not partying and traveling. I’m 17. I am “young and healthy.” I live in a small town in western Pennsylvania. In August, my family had to make the difficult decision that my brother and I would attend in person school (well, as in person as it gets. My district believes in science so we have a complicated hybrid schedule). We talked in depth about how we thought our educations would suffer if we didn’t return to school. This is all to decide to sit in a classroom with ten other people, all masked and all physically distant. For some families, that was too great of a risk. Their children are immunocompromised. They have grandparents in the home. Their mother is undergoing chemotherapy. Whatever it may be, some families chose a cyber option. That is an example of a spectrum of risk. This Tana of Jake Paul-esque apology is nothing but a joke.

I just found out about this story. And I'm kinda dissapointed to be honest! A) Your friends know you almost the best I think (it works like that in general). If they know how important is this for you, they wouldn't make a party like that, because they respect your opinion. They wouldn't make a party which goes into the trash instantly, because you turn it down. They knew you would agree. Also, you were in the apartment. They called you or I don't know like "hey Mike, meet us here please". You went there and had a swimming suit in your pocket randomly just in case you need it? 🤔 So all of these things are so messy and unlogical for me. B) Yes, you are young. You saw people getting depressed because of the carantine. But after seeing all of those things you still decided to have fun. While maybe some people hearing out your advices, they are staying at home, they are getting depressed, they are skipping important family events, while you, who gave the advice, having a party on a boat. You saw people suffer after catching this virus, because it's spreading faster than other viruses in general (but again, I don't need to tell you about how this virus works, because you know it), and you still took the risk. One of the people who was there might spread the virus to someone who has a worse immune system than you for example. Because you only said that you made the carantine, but what about the others? And just to tell you my "case" as an example. 2 months ago I had huge pain and fever. Like I couldn't even move. I asked my doctor (I called him on phone) to ask for advice/medicine/any kind of help, but he refused. He said because of the virus he doesn't want me to go there with fever and he don't want to help me through phone. He said I need a negative covid test. In that time getting the results of the test took like 1,5 week. Next day my fever went down, I still had pain. Because of that the hospital refused to send me on testing. But the doctor still refused to treat me, because I had fever. I'm still having problems, but since I wasn't treated on time, they just don't know what to do with me, how to treat me. So yeah, it would be kinda nice to "end" this virus as fast as possible, because I don't think that I'm the only person who didn't get a proper treatment because of the virus. Don't take it as a "mean comment". I will probably still watch you, because some things you do here (I mean, on your main channel) is truly important. Take it as a "mirror", think about it and be more careful.

However, being a public medical figure and partying without proper coverings pre-vaccine is his mistake. I know I've seen lots of KZbinrs that have ignored lots of rules about the pandemic, havnt researched and don't take any precautions. We're all human. I know I havnt always kept up with all the strict rules in my area. I think him doing this one event was a small sacrifice for improving his mental health when he's on the front lines of researching this depressing topic for us so we don't necessarily have to. People didn’t attend loved ones funerals because of what could happen. My father passed when I was 13 and this year and last I was unable to visit his grave on what would have been 6th and 7th anniversaries. I had to spend the 7th anniversary isolated away from my friends when I would have been out with them in an attempt to distract myself from the horrors of that day. We have out our trust in science, medicine, and in you (and other clinicians), therefore to see you meandering down a lake in a boat surrounded by 10+ people without social distancing or proper measures, and apparently without the awareness of what your own actions might do if somebody was to get ill, or (what has happened), you were caught, is incredibly debilitating. I have been a subscriber of your channel for years, and while this won’t make me stop watching, i do want to see if you have/will change your actions to honour or acknowledge those who are smart enough not to go gallivanting away with your mates. Some of us have had to make huge sacrifices, myself being one of them, and the least you could do is acknowledge that. It’s too late now of course, but I hope next time you will think clearer about what you are doing, who might see it, and thus how it might impact people.

If you were truly sorry, you would have posted this on your main channel. As a medical student, I looked up to you Dr. Mike. You've inspired me to spread awareness and follow this field. This feels like betrayal. You've inspired me for years, but your image shattered in my mind. I'm sure others agree with me on this. This apology is a blatant justification of your actions. You work hard and seclude yourself to reduce the risk of the pandemic spreading both for yourself and for others. That is your choice. I also choose to isolate and haven't hugged my parents, siblings, or even young nieces and nephews since this began. You can't let other peoples' choices dictate the value of your choices. Being disappointed with another for making a poor choice is reasonable. I think it should be balanced with the rest of their choices, their response to that choice, and how they continually act afterwords. Doctor Mike's choice shouldn't be ignored, but it also shouldn't define him. That being said, I agree it would be appropriate for his apology to go on his main channel to reach the extended audience there, many of whom have the same questions and concerns as this reduced audience. You ask him to apologize to the entire world, not those that support him on THIS channel. You weren't listening. He is apologizing to those on this channel, the healthcare workers on the front lines, and those that have been maintaining isolation the entire time. According to your statement of working hard and secluding yourself, that means he is apologizing to you. Why should he extend an apology to people that don't care or are actively fighting against COVID measures (consistantly ignoring protocols or creating conspiracy theories)?

It's interesting that you hearting comments that are saying that it's okay. I have a few questions I would love to have answered. 1. Would you have ever apologized if you didn't get caught? Or just pretended that it never happened? 2. There are 15 people in the photos, which is more than 10. Why did you lie? 3. You put this on your smaller channel where most people from your 6.49million subscribers wouldn't see it unless they looked it up. If you really wanted to take accountability for your actions, why isn't this on your biggest platform which is your other channel? I'm grateful you didn't contract covid (I hope the other 14 other people didn't contract or spread covid also) but all this video says to me is that the rules don't apply to you, you get caught out and you address it, you have broken the trust of your subscribers and you don't have the guts to put this on your main channel so people can learn from your mistakes. Guys, I think the hate should stop. I came up to this video just now, and how people are calling him a "hypocrite". I am not here to take sides. He has made a mistake. I know. But he isn't the only one who attended parties and violated the guidelines. Honestly, I think that if anything, y'all should attack all, if you think what he did was wrong. I admit he was, but A LOT of other people did as well. I've seen many other times when people did things worse, and as long as everyone took minor precautions, that's all that matters. And most importantly, he apologized, so people should stop hating on him. He at least admitted that he made a mistake. He was tested negative and made sure that everyone was safe. Stop the hate and move on :)
